E3 2016 Megapalooza: Virtual Reality Rises

Post by Durandal »

Do you ever get so excited about how much something will disappoint you?

It's that time of the year again where soulless husks in fancy suits out of touch with their userbase and humanity in general stand on a platform making a general fool of themselves as they try to convince you to buy shit you don't really need. Previous years the Kinect, motion controls, new consoles, 3D, and online services would be gamechangers in the game industry, but they all miserably failed to catch on. Not this time! This time, VR will be the next thing, and will change how you experience video games forever!

Strap on expensive untested goggles on your face and make yourself look like a dork to everyone around you! If you turn your head to the left, your in-game avatar will turn left too, so immersive! Attempt to perform basic actions in games like reloading your gun by waggling your controller around, whereas in the previous outdated technologic era you had to press one button to do something as simple as reloading your gun! Check out all these games which take advantage of VR which are definitely not gimmicky tech demos! Our VR headsets have built-in cushions for maximum comfort on your face, and will definitely not make you look like a raccoon after hours of extended playing! Look at all these hired actors having fun! Now your dream of playing DoDonPachi with immersive VR technology will finally come true!

What does video games spell? Video games? No. Video games? No! It spells virtual reality! VIRTUAL REALITY! Go buy our brand of VR goggles right now for the bargain price of $699 (taxes not included) and show everyone how cool you are by buying our newest trendy products! Next up is a line-up of your favourite GOTY games with upcoming VR support we definitely did not sponsor for the sake of advertising!

Of course companies have something else to present on stage. Bethesda will make your show them money with games such as Dishonored 2, Fallout 4 DLC, TESO DLC, Doom 4 DLC, and maybe Prey 2. EA will bring us long-awaited games such as Mass Effect Andromeda, Titanfall 2, Battlefield 1, cashgrab mobile games, trying to rationalize the disappointment of Mirror's Edge 2, and release the newest DVD of EA and Disney gangbanging Star Wars, starring Amy Hennig! And of course, EA will bring us SPORTS and SPORTS and SPORTs and SPORTS and SPORTS and

Microsoft will push out another cycle of their mainstay franchises on stage, such as ANOTHER Halo and ANOTHER Gears of War and ANOTHER Forza. Maybe they will show some Scalebound too. But more importantly, you will install Windows 10. You are going to install Windows 10. Windows 10 is the future. And maybe you don't have to buy an Xbone for Raiden V anymore, because they'll be bringing all Xbone exclusives over to PC (Windows 10)!

How do you do, fellow #gamers? It's #Ubisoft, calling in an emergency supply drop on this game! Get #E3ubihyped for epic titles such as Tom Cuhlancy's #ghostrecon Wildlands, the #ravingrabbids, another #farcry5, and check out this cool #WatchDogs2 game, where you play as an übercool hacker fighting THE MAN after he got sentenced just for being black! Me no gusta! Enact justice on the hippest city in America, San Francisco, and fight for freedom from the evil corporations who just want your money! Pre-order now for bonuses such as cool new costumes and missions! Now here's our expert team of dancers, with #justdance coming to the PS4! Remember to #girlwood!

Sony might be bringing the goods with great Japanese games such as Yakuza 6, Yakuza 0, Ace Combat 7, Ys 8, NieR Automata, Persona 5, NiOh, Guilty Gear, Star Ocean, King of Fighters, and Kingdom Hearts, so they'll just show them all in a 4-minute long reel as Sony focuses on the REAL DEAL: VR. And of course there are plenty of high-definition remake remasters of your favourite PS3 games coming to PS4, so you can buy your favourite games again! Maybe they'll show DMC 5 and The Last Guardian too, and perhaps From will show something new. Here's this PS4 Neo thing which only costs FOUR HUNDRED NINETY NINE US DOLLARS! In the meanwhile, everyone will fellate David Cagé over his new game which has such in-depth social commentary, the new Last of Us which will be like Citizen Kane 2, and this No Man's Sky game which is definitely not going to be underwhelming!

The PC Gaming Show is going to show you new and exciting MOBAs, I hope you're not getting tired of those yet! And there will be cool exclusives too, such as Styx 2, Serious Sam 4, Shadow Warrior 2, Space Hulk: Death Wing (why do all of these games start with an S?)
We'll be seeing Civ VI, that new Tyranny game from Obsidian, extensive AMD marketing, and of course: VR. Valve will do something of no particular note, and here's tons of indie games whose developers could afford for them to be presented on E3.

And the biggest mystery of all, the new Nintendo NX and Legend of Zelda. What are they? What do they do? Surely Nintendo must hold a lot of confidence in the NX and the new LoZ if they are willing to have a separate event just for them. And after that we'll have some more Pokémons, Monster Hunter, and the new #FE (I did not add the hashtag here) which will most certainly be a hit amongst the cool kids.

The schedule is as follows:
Image

Get some friends, grab some drinks, pick a stream, and witness the trainwreck.
What do you predict/hope to see at this year's E3?

I am definitely going to drink myself to death with these drinking games and the state of the current industry

Not expecting too much this year, but hoping for Ace Combat 7, DMC5, and wishing for a Ridge Racer announcement.

YES I'VE BEEN WAITING MY WHOLE LIFE FOR GAMES LIKE THESE

Behold, the long-awaited Summer Lesson!

Image

The game where you "teach" Japanese to an naive unsuspecting American HBB. She'll never see it coming!

Also, whatever the fuck this thing is!

Image

I don't know what it is, but it looks awesome!
ghosts of E3's past
Please watch the PSX4 abridged vid if you have not already. There's others as well. Such as the incredible innovations brought to us by the XBox uh... whatever the hell they named the latest XBox. YBox Z? I dunno. Anyway.

They do a good job of taking the piss out of all this bullshit.

Durandal wrote:But more importantly, you will install Windows 10. You are going to install Windows 10. Windows 10 is the future.
lul jakes on them - I'm still gonna keep using Windows XP and they have no mechanism to forcibly hijack my computer with their computer aids because XP won't let them. BryanM ain't no fool.

Though it is regrettable I'll have to become a Linux douche if the day comes they finally make non compatible processors with XP. Because by that time Windows will be spying on everything you do and it'll call the cops on you every time you make a weird google search like "bananas knives swimming".
Games BryanM actually cares about
Honestly I think there's a spiritual sequel of sorts to Chrono Trigger coming out from Squaresoft, which I'm moderately interested in.

Everything's just a remake of things we already have tho. That's not a bad thing per-say - it's just symptomatic of a mature medium. Books aren't ever doing anything new with anything. And with shit like Bravely Default/Mario Maker, it feels like the big players are bending just a little bit toward retro.

Though I'm sure they'll work really hard on those neural shunts to lace up with your brainstem so the boob grabbing, brain toasting reality of Sword Boobies Online will be a reality soon. A splendid 10 frames a second jammed right up into your neocortex. Aaaaany day now.

EA conference summary:

Satan with a heavy Australian accent shares podium with British counterpart all the way over in London for some reason. Twice the conferences, twice the ticket profits
Satan really tries to emphasize the Play part of gaming, but he becomes more straightforward and believable if you just remove the L from Play
here comes the Mass Effect Andromeda trai- it's just a montage of developers working on something while boasting how great it is to work on the expansive universe of Mass Effect and how they are going to do all these great things, just like with the Mirror's Edge trailer in last year's E3 presentation, here's one shot of gameplay BTW. You can explore EVERYTHING!
here comes the Star Wars trai- it's just a montage of developers working on something while boasting how great it is to work on the expansive universe of Star Wars and how they are going to do all these great things, just like with the Mass Effect Andromeda trailer a few minutes ago, here's some shots of Star Wars: Battlefront gameplay BTW. Mobile Star Wars games! Amy Hennig's soul is being sucked out
sports sports sports fifa sports sports john madden sports sports football celebs sports sports prize money sports sports championship sports sports psoperst
pre-rendered cutscenes almost everywhere
let's help indies out so we can control them for profits
look at all these celebs shilling our games, money well spent
swedish ripoff of Journey which doesnt hold your hand and is the Dark Souls of indies, next to no new IPs aside from that
titanfall 2 exclusive to xbox one (and PS4) (and PC). now comes with a singleplayer mode where you play as a diverse grunt named JACK COOPER as you deeply bond with your gunda- titan who is capable of speech and is your best friend. and some multiplayer footage
buy our games and we will send part of your money to us of course, and these charities who in some way help out LGBT rights, somehow
and the sequel you have all been waiting for, Battlefield One! *Kanye West music starts playing* dynamic weather, you get to fly blimps, horses, and motorcycles! destructivle environments, but this time it applies to everything, we swear. no trench warfare because LOL. also let's pay Zac Efron and Jamie Foxx to play Battlefield One for One hour

the one good thing about this presentation is that it was only one hour long
RANK: F-----

Titanfall 2 is really about the only thing that has me excited. The story mode probably will be cliche space marine stuff, but the multiplayer in Titanfall 1 was something special. I'm looking forward to losing many hours of my life to this game.

I couldn't care less about this kind of thing. Until it really seems like I'm really there (which would require some shit going into your brain), I don't see the point. I mean, it might be sort of neat, but I can't see doing serious gaming on it.

Now, if it has a virtual strip club or something, I might take a look.

Honestly, I don't want to get sick, from all the movement. I want virtual poon, but only if it's like the holo-deck.

Titanfall 2 looks good. Normally, I strongly dislike any multiplayer game that has a progression system with unlockable weapons and abilities, but I still had fun with Titanfall. I guess the huge & complex maps, giant robuts, and traversal mechanics helped make it more enjoyable than your run of the mill Call of Duty. I'm not sure I'll get the sequel right away since I'll hardly ever play it over Halo or Overwatch, but it should be a decent game regardless.

lost my shit when the quake champions trailer aired. huge q3a fan and I still play ql which is one of my favorite mp fps games (tfc being the first).

and the prey trailer looked right down my alley. bethesda conference started strong and got weak towards the end, but still twice as good as ea's.

Honestly, I only watched it for the Star Wars news... which there wasn't any. At least it was only an hour long.

The fact that they teased a Battlefield 1 (why can't people properly number their shit anymore?) trailer before talking for all of two minutes then showing the rest was probably the most ridiculous part.

The amount of people hyped over the fake gameplay footage made me want to vomit.

Maybe I all just wrote that shit in hopes of being proven wrong, that this E3 would actually display all kinds of games instead of pre-rendered CGI trailers and that my cynicism was entirely misplaced. But no, it's the same shit all over again, and I'm sitting here with a soda bottle in one hand, my other hand on the keyboard, and my face filled with smug self-satisfaction as it fades into despair, rage, and envy once the man in the suit shows up on stage.
I need to justify the expenses of all these soda bottles somehow

the Quake announcement sucked all life out of me, so I'm not going to bother with Bethesda

So theres going to be a "remastered" edition of Skyrim? Wtf.
I guess it makes sense if they wanna milk the skyrim cow on the new gen of consoles, it makes probably 0 sense on PC.
Then again I'm not much of a graphics whore, so playing Skyrim for the first time recently on the highest settings looked gorgeous to me, even if its 5 years old.

The thing is, are they gonna fix it from being the buggy piece of shit that all Bethesda's main series are? Is that part of the remaster plan.

Would've much rather seen a Morrowind or Daggerfall remaster.

Edit: oh yeah there's already a fan made morrowind remaster out there for free that i probably won't play.

But E3 is by definition an advertisement to separate drooling morons from their money. Final Fantasy 7 proved that not showing the actual game will make you a million billion dollars. Generic movie advertising over decades has proven explosions and teal and orange = money. Sports and murder simulators make the most money in the United States, so those get pushed to the front. And Nintendo's anemic performance lately in its censorship to avoid giving people boners has proven people prefer boners to not having them, so gratuitous boobies are plastered everywhere.

If ya want to see a festival that's more than just about money, you'd have to go somewhere run by people who give a little bit of a shit. E3 has been a cancer for a long time, and any player big enough has been doing far better with direct marketing.

Xbox revision looks nice. No external power block. Wish they wouldn't make it smaller though, just use the extra space for better cooling.

ReCore looks like a game. As opposed to a cinematic experience or whatever.

They finally backed down on forcing people to use the UI language of their region.

Indie section is still a ridiculously short montage of games that deserve more to be shown on stage than any of the shit they are showing.

Oh. Scorpio coming next year. No real details though.

My main takeaway from the Microsoft conference was to not buy an Xbox because everything is coming to PC. The Scorpio is interesting though. Since all games have to work with the original Xbone, developers won't be able to make full use of the hardware. This type of 'high end' option is probably the only way good image quality and high framerates will ever be standard on console. (Unless playing on the more powerful system unlocks higher res textures and better visual effects and such)

Forza Horizon 3 - Looked nice. I've only played the demo of FH2, and it was fun, but the Australia setting in this one is a lot more interesting to me.
ReCore - They picked a bad time to show this. Directly following big AAA games like Gears and Forza made this look low budget and unpolished, but it could be a fun game. I'll keep it on my radar.
Scalebound - Not sure what to make of this. I'll be disappointed if co-op is the main focus, like Lost Planet 2. They seem to be pushing that every time they show it. The boss fight looked cool visually, but there was nothing going on with it mechanically. I'm still not worried about it though. Kamiya has only made great games so far.
Dead Rising 4 - It'll probably be fun, but I'm already disappointed because it's a "loose remake" of the original (supposedly). What's the point when it won't be a better game? I'd much rather have had something entirely new.

On a side note, I have no idea why Microsoft loves Limbo so much. It's a simple puzzle/platform game that takes like 3 hours to do everything you possibly can with it.

Sony:
God of War - Looks way closer to Ryse than God of War. Seems to be taking itself very seriously too. Do not want.
Resident Evil 7 - I lost interest in the trailer before it ended, so imagine my surprise when "Resident Evil VII" popped up. I don't want RE to become a first person spooky walking simulator, but I'll reserve judgment for now.
Spider-Man (from Insomniac) - Nice trailer. I would play a good Spider-Man game.
Gravity Rush 2 - Wasn't at the conference, but it looks like more of the same. Good enough for me.

Phantom Dust is also getting an updated port to the Xbone/PC. That should be better than a new game from some random western developer.

I have only been half paying attention to E3 this year mostly because I have little to no budget (or attention span for that matter) for gaming right now, but so far, my thoughts are these:

- MS seems to be more worried about lack of Windows 10 adoption (a lot of them seem to be clinging to Windows 7) among gamers than they're letting on;
- Everyone's throwing inordinate amounts of effort into trying to will VR into relevance whether or not it's actually wise to do so (I got a Samsung Gear VR as a freebie with my Galaxy S7 phone, and so far it seems interesting but gimmicky.) I suspect it'll be one of those situations similar to what has happened with 3D in movie theaters where they threw tons of resources into it and ended up with what amounts to a niche market;
- That Star Trek VR thing looks interesting, but given the fact that it would require four Oculus Rift setups to use fully I have a hard time seeing it catch on except maybe something that shows up in game centers;
- Nothing really stands out to me in the Sony presentation, and I don't see myself getting a PS4 anytime soon.

I'll be interested to see what comes up in the Nintendo presentation, but don't have high hopes there either.
We want you, save our planet!

That one was at an earlier conference. I think EA? I'm not sure.

Also, I had no idea how different the new CoD game was compared to the others. After the preview, I was super shocked to see the title pop up. Even though I probably won't get it myself, I sincerely hope it blows BF1 out of the water.

Honestly, the thing about E3 that's excited me the most so far was the Kingdom Hearts trailers released before it even started.

Microsoft trying to sell us Windows 10 as expected, Ubisoft was not as cringeworthy as expected with Fractured But Whole probably being the best presentation of E3, PC Gaming Show was mostly indie titles I did not care about save for Bannerlord and that Giant Cop game, no SS4 or Space Hulk to be seen anywhere (FFS, they should have announced SSVR AFTER SS4 so nobody would have their hopes temporarily crushed), and as usual Sony had all the good games, but didn't show any of them on stage because the Western audience wouldn't be interested in superior nippon games. Kojima's new game teaser was exciting, and the audience's reaction when Crash came on stage only for them to announce Crash remasters and Crash for Skylanders was legendary. I think Sony had the least worst presentation yet, and only by a small margin. This entire E3 was incredibly lackluster, even compared to previous years. I don't think Nintendo with their limited line-up of games can save it.

lmfao, the way Sony rolled Kojima out. I'm sorry, my closeted sony fanboyism is coming out again. Terrible name for a game though.
