Mushihime Sama Ps2 impressions
No offense, but you're going to have to give up arcade-ports completely then because no port will ever be 100% accurate to its arcade parent.GaijinPunch wrote:With the lack of loads of games I've been buying lately (only 4 new games the whole summer --- and 2 of which I'm only luke warm about) I don't mind plunking down several hundred for a full kit the way it's supposed to be. I'm an asshole when it comes to this... I very much like things in their original state.

I didn't say 100%. I said near-perfect, which ESPGaluda and DOJ both qualify as. And yeah, if there's a correlation between the HW hardware and the console like the Naomi/DC thing. No offense, but you're going to have to give up arcade-ports completely then because no port will ever be 100% accurate to its arcade parent.

Then I misconstrued your statement, because when you said "original state", I take that as you wanting the game to be identical to its arcade counter-part, which is impossible unless you're playing the pcb in a cabinet. And I could be wrong about this, but wasn't there something wrong with the DOJ port, like it was low-res or something (don't follow the tech posts that close but I recall someone(s) bitchin' about it).GaijinPunch wrote:I didn't say 100%. DOJ & ESPGaluda in TATE mode are about as good as ports get. I've not played too much of DOJ (on either) but have played Galuda extensively on the PS2, and quite a bit in the arcades. I can't tell a difference. The problem w/ both of them is in yoko mode... they use upscaled sprites at a higher resolution. I don't know how you'd go about doing both in true low res. The yoko would obviously had to be redrawn.but wasn't there something wrong with the DOJ port, like it was low-res or something (don't follow the tech posts that close but I recall someone(s) bitchin' about it).
I know what you mean though -- it's very extreme, but I'm weird like that, especially w/ Cave games. Maybe it's a schoolgirl crush I'm going through. But since I don't buy like 5-6 games a month like I used to, I don't mind dropping a lot on the good ones that I'll enjoy. PCBs hold their value pretty well too!

I think it's just all posts and topics about examining every port with a microscope these days that has wore on me. I can see when a port is inherently flawed like GWG, it deserves criticism, and even if people want to point out the flaws in a game like Mushi, I don't mind that either. It just strikes me wrong when people are so unforgiving to a game that costs $60 when it isn't a perfect replica of a game specially designed for arcade hardware and runs for a grand. I'm not going to hate on you for wanting the PCB though, more power to you. And I also wish Arika did the port, unfortunately it wasn't an option.GaijinPunch wrote:DOJ & ESPGaluda in TATE mode are about as good as ports get. I think the problem w/ Mushi is that you won't have to put it under a microscope to see the difference if youv'e got a decent setup. I'm sure it will play very close to the original. Or, I could luck out and really not like the game enough to warrant the PCB (unlikely). It was only on beta test when I left Japan, so only got to play it a handful of times.

Got mine today too - nice port, BUT.
Take a look at DOJ and Galuda - yoko mode. They're scaled, but they look nice considering. Now look at Mushi. Someone has smeared a layer of smoothing grease on it, and the result is absolutely horrible. Looks fine in tate (but I don't like playing on my side), but in yoko it's absolutely hideous compared to Arikas ports.

That’s terrible news for me. My TATE TV has horrible speakers.Varuga wrote:I like the port with the exception of one thing:it has no digital audio...I had to rip apart my entertainment center to plug the crappy L+R plugs into my television just so I could hear audio.
Why oh why, Taito, must you not pump audio through the opitical port?
It's good to hear that TATE is supported though.
Not quite - compare DOJ menus to Mushi ones - there it's most evident. I think it's time I invested in a PS2 -> JAMMA converter.Metal Gear Okt wrote:Eh, it's about the same as DOJ in Yoko, but it's not as clear as Galuda, I'll give you that.

I hear that. My PS2 shmup collection is just buldging right now and after seeing Dave K.'s setup I want a full upright cab with all that in it more than ever. Heck I didn't even know I wanted it at all until I saw it in person.bloodflowers wrote:I think it's time I invested in a PS2 -> JAMMA converter.
FULL LOCK is BOMB
To hear that Yoko mode looks crappy is disappointing news to me. It's a pain in the ass to rotate back and forth, because I watch DVDs, play other games etc. on my TV all the time, so the majority of my Galuda time is spent in Yoko--and having a good amount of experience with the arcade version and Tate, I always considered Galuda's Yoko mode graphics quite acceptable. If Mushi's aren't good, I don't know how much time I'm going to spend with the game in general =(
I tried the game on YOKO and I don't think it's as bad as it might sound. It's not quite as nice as in TATE, but it's totally playable.
No matter how good a game is, somebody will always hate it. No matter how bad a game is, somebody will always love it.

Oh, it's still playable alright, just a shame they insisted on that horrible filter which you can't deactivate.Ghegs wrote:I tried the game on YOKO and I don't think it's as bad as it might sound. It's not quite as nice as in TATE, but it's totally playable.

More impressions
I like the difficulty level in this game, it's good for human beings instead of Japanese ninja players. Original is tricky, maniac too but in a different way and I think I'll learn it more easily. Arrange is easier than maniac, and ultra is mind bogglingly crazy. A variety of challenges for a variety of players. I just wish they'd taken the opportunity to ditch the level 2 music from the arcade and write a new tune for it, the others are so much better it seems out of place.
Very happy with my purchase - would like the option to turn off filtering in future though.

Glad I never play in yoko mode is all I can say.
And no digital audio? Hmmm. Good thing my set up is kinda ghetto. Still, from what folks are saying it sounds like Taito spent their resources ensuring an arcade faithful TATE mode and everything else was secondary. Oh well. I can live with it.
Too bad I won't get my copy till next week.

I was all like, "Hurray, a restart option inside the game!". So I use it once, and when I finish that run it's all like, "You used the restart button, you dirty, rotten cheater, no inputting your initials for you!".
Really, why give us the option and then not let me put my initials in? It's as dumb as GigaWing 2 adding a 1 to the end of your score
Or maybe I'm just confused and screwed something up somehow.
