kidneythief wrote:First of all, to an english speaker, "Yoko" isn't very !@#$ing descriptive, now is it. And while tate is a Portion of a whole word, an entire word would be preferable. Try "Rotated", or even "Sideways" or "Vertical". Those are all adjectives. Tate is not.
The problem with using adjectives such as "horizontal" or "vertical" is that they already apply to the way shmups scroll. While it is true that most vertically-scrolling shmups use 3:4 displays and most (all?) horizontal shmups use 4:3 displays, there are some oddities. Mars Matrix, mentioned in this thread, is a good example of such an oddity. Using the same words to describe both scrolling style and monitor style could lead to confusion, so we use different words for each.

Tate means "vertical" in Japanese. Yoko means "horizontal."

Quick history of English lesson: words have often been taken from other languages. The biggest example is all of the French words (like beef) that were adopted into the language thanks to William and his Norman buddies in 1066. This is how languages evolve and how they have always evolved. Discovering how this applies to the current topic is an exercise left to the reader.

I will never allow my beloved English language to become filthy Japanese... Never!

And theres no reason you can't say the following: "I play this vertically scrolling game called Mars Matrix in the proper 4:3 aspect ratio for which it was designed."

Yeah saying tate and yoko is pretty faggy, but the subject is completely off topic. Back to talking about DC shmups please.

You are just begging for a ban now aren't you!?

Telling us all in your first post what we can or can not say...and "threatening" to beat people to the face or slice someone's throat if they spell something not to you're liking!? TSSS....

PS:

I love to see Iky being played in TATE! :P

Listed right there, horizontal orientation.
Thanks for clearing that up, although I regret even bringing it up.

And kidneythief, I actually agree with almost every point you made when actually talking about games, so I'll stop saying "Iky" just for you. :D

kidneythief wrote:Firstly, I'm sick of you fags saying TATE and YOKO. It's annoying as !@#$. How !@#$ing nerdy can you possibly get.
One might think that it's even "nerdier" or "faggier" to make a big stink about commonly-used shmup (why not make a big deal out of that "gay" word as well?) terminology in your very first post here, saying that you're "sick of" it being used when you've only just gotten here (or else have been lurking around and have only bothered to actually post just now)? Honestly, is it worth starting trouble, especially this early on, over a pair of words that (get used to it) you're going to be hearing a lot around here, if you stick around (or are allowed to)? "My beloved English language?" Please, spare me.

No one will care if you prefer to use "horizontal" and "vertical" instead, but calling anyone else who doesn't use those terms a "fag" puts you squarely in troll territory. I suggest either making a rapid attitude adjustment or else moving on; if you do neither yourself, than one of the above will be done for you.

I'm not new to the shooter community, just to these particular boards. People that are really hardcore about something often come up with really obnoxious ways to seem more hardcore than the less hardcore of the lot of them.

Potheads -> more pot, bigger bongs/pipes
Porno addicts -> weirder fetishes, more extreme portrayals of them
Goths -> Scarier little costume thing
people who think drugs are cool -> always bragging about how often they do drugs and the hardest drug they've done.
Emo music people -> Longer lists of bands that nobody ever heard of
Anime fans -> absolutely cannot stand to watch an english dubbed cartoon, always writing long lists of dumb obscure animes
Shooter fans -> extremely strict criteria over what game is or is not a shooter, and other anal/nerdy tendencies.
edit: forum users -> obsessively calling someone (who has opposing views to the bullshit that the niche forum users are used to dealing with) a troll, and then calling for a prompt "ignore, delete and ban". :D

Every single niche has it's lame traditions, and they're all bullshit and whoever follows them zealously is stupid. That's my stance, at least.

Who's "overly zealous" here? I've already said that I don't care if you don't like or use the terms, and I doubt anyone else cares either, but I don't think it's unreasonable to draw the line at calling anyone who does use those terms nasty names, especially in your very first post here, and every subsequent one you've made since. Methinks you're a lot more "zealous" about the axe you've got to grind than anyone else here is (heck, most of us don't even HAVE an axe to grind on a subject as stupid as this).

What bothers us is not the fact that you have views contrary to the majority, but that you insist on the uninhibited right to curse out the majority as loud as you please and whenever you feel like it because THEY don't agree with YOU (rather "elitist," don't you think?). I believe that the terms of use for this forum say something about constant flaming or the like; most forums have something similar in theirs. Keep your views, and express them respectfully (why not just say "I've never liked using 'tate' and 'yoko'", rather than saying that anyone who does is a "fag," which makes no sense anyway?), but I'm afraid that just because you consider yourself some sort of enlightened crusader against the ignorant legions doesn't get you a free pass to be any more of a troll than anyone else here. Get used to it or get out.

Yeah, I agree about the whole "tate" and "yoko" stuff popping up all the time. (Most of us) aren't japanese, let's not act like we are. Those words are just plain silly anyway lol

people who call people fags, are fags

edit: also on topic.

i would like to throw some more love at Cannon Spike, Gunbird 2, and ZG2. as these are the only shooter(ish) games i have on dc at the mo. ZG2 in particular owns a special place in my unmodded dreamcast.

Relax, kidneythief is being equally obnoxious in another topic. Just another soul willing to say anything as long as he can do it over the faceless void. Get him in the same room with you...ah, now that would be a different story, I imagine.

I'm only missing the Giga Wing games, Cannon Spike, and Twinkle Star Sprites (but if it's like the Arcade version, then I can say I played this one). To me, all of the games are really good, except for a few of them (but only very slightly), and they are:

1.) Gunbird 2
I believe I gave up trying to one-credit this game, as I can't even finish the game on the default difficulty by myself. Maybe if I try it in tate...

Well, at least it's always amusing to hear Marion's cry when she dies.

2.) Bangai-O
This is one of those Treasure games that, for some odd reason, is lacking a lot of their trademark: Cool bosses. Wait, lemme rephrase that- they do have cool/quirky bosses, but we get more bland bosses than cool ones.

3.) Chaos Field
It's got the style, but it needs to kill the loading time.

4.) Trizeal
Needs no loading time.

I agree with Bangaioh. I was really dissappointed after I bought this game. I thought having such a little sprite I would fight against some huge and well designed Treasure bosses. But I find the boss battles in Bangaio not so special. But the handling is quite good.

I am wondering why Bangaio is considered as a shmup...

But saying it would likely spark another argument.

People who make such distinctions don't consider Bangaioh a shmup.

I wouldn't consider Bangai-O a shmup, I would just say it's a sidescrolling action shooter. That aside, it's the fucking juice! I dunno why some of you don't like it. Flying head first into a crowded room, activating a 400 missle bomb and watching the game slow to a crawl as THE FUCKING UNIVERSE EXPLODES ARRRRRHGGHHHHHGHEE is too awesome for words. I don't think there is a more satisfying weapon/mechanic in any game than Bangai-O's bomb.

Only in some stages can you actually do that, and I tend to only go back those stages after I finish them. Most of the time, I'm stuck with under that number.

I'm not saying the game is terrible or anything. The plot/music is top-notch. It's just I keep pointing out what I consider to be bad in this game.

this is perhaps the most perfect explanation of BangaiO i have ever read, thank you.

and by the way, this game rocks the pants off my socks.

I don't see how saying "yoko" (meaning horizontal in Japanese) and tate (pronounced 'tah-tay', not 'tayt', Japanese for "stand up" or vertical) makes me a "fag". (which means cigarette, btw... so clever, calling us all cigarettes. ;) )

kidneythief needs to be set home with a note that reads "does not play well with others"

like any technical slang,"yoko" and "tate" are useful for enthusiasts to comunicate among themselves quickly. every enthusiast comunity has similar words, and it has nothing to do with trying to be japanese or whatever, it's just an easy way to avoid confusion between the various ways that hori & vert are used w/r/t this genre of games.

I can't get into Chaos Field. I think the scoring is too complicated for my liking.

I really enjoy Mars Matrix and Ikaruga. The rest are pretty so-so if you ask me!
