Wow, I step away for a bit and there's a ton of replies. I'll definitely check some of these out. I think I'll have to go for a happy medium between a game that really is enjoyable and moderately easy.
I sorta see what frederik's saying about esp.ra.de. Even I don't have a ton of trouble with it until after the third stage.

i cannot believe esprade and espgaluda even got a hint of a mention in this thread thats just rediculous , whats easy to a long term experienced shmup player sure as hell isnt gonna be easy to somone whose stated there newish to shmups and can only get to stage 3 on BWR. Id go for bakraid if your playing for survival just dont play for score it turns that game into somthing far tougher .
On the other hand, if you score well you get basically unlimited extends.clp wrote:i cannot believe esprade and espgaluda even got a hint of a mention in this thread thats just rediculous , whats easy to a long term experienced shmup player sure as hell isnt gonna be easy to somone whose stated there newish to shmups and can only get to stage 3 on BWR. I hate to break it to you, man, but Espgaluda is one of the friendliest shmups out there. Not only are 90% of the patterns in the game fully reaction-dodgeable, but you've got a freaking autobomb/bullet slowdown mode to boot. Add all of this to the fact that the core gameplay is extremely solid, and one of the most natural games in the genre to pick up and play, even if you decide to dabble in the score system. The final attack is absolutely the only thing keeping Espgaluda from being the obvious best choice for easiest 1CC (on a worthwhile game) in my mind.clp wrote:i cannot believe esprade and espgaluda even got a hint of a mention in this thread thats just rediculous , whats easy to a long term experienced shmup player sure as hell isnt gonna be easy to somone whose stated there newish to shmups and can only get to stage 3 on BWR.
ESP.Ra.De is a different story.
I think (the first loop of) Donpachi is worth mentioning, though. The scoring and gameplay is lax enough that you can easily make the score extend and collectible extend on a pure survival run, and grab the 1CC with fairly minimal memorization. The final stage is pretty cheap, but so long as you're not playing the Japanese version, you should have plenty of bombs to carry you through a good portion of it, anyway.

Everyone was using Full Auto because it was permitted for the competition. The Coop wrote:Well, if you use the rapid fire code that's in the Saturn version (hold B, and press Y, Right, Left, X, Z, L, R at the screen with the "Start/Options" choice), you'll see what most tournament players were using. It makes the game waaaaaaaay easier.professor ganson wrote:That makes me feel a bit better. I was using the Saturn port and found it reasonably challenging. The Coop wrote: That's only because nearly everyone used very fast autofire. If you use the normal autofire speed, it's quite a different story.
Given the suggestions so far, I can agree on the following being relatively easy to SCC:
Shineryuu Explosion
Thunder Force III
Zanac Neo
Gradius II (Famicom version)
Gradius III (Super Famicom/Super Nintendo version)
Gate of Thunder
Lords/Winds of Thunder
Super Aleste/Space Megaforce
I see where you're coming from, but surely it's only friendly by Cave/bullet hell standards? Across the genre there are just far easier examples...Necronopticous wrote: I hate to break it to you, man, but Espgaluda is one of the friendliest shmups out there.
Which reminds me, Negligente, you should really try Blast Wind (Saturn). Nice and easy really, but still damn good fun, and then a reasonably harder shmup can be found in the same game by playing with the second ship.
And also, welcome to the forum mate!
I vote Battle Bakraid, I can get to the final boss rush in the normal course in just about every playthrough since I started playing. I haven't 1cc'd it quite yet but I don't put much time into it. I'm sure I could with more effort.
Psyvariar 2 also gets a mention for being pretty easy. I've only played it a few times but I 1cc'd it without a whole lot of effort, and I'm not all that good at shmups either. As long as you learn to ride the shield chains you can get through most of it without even worrying about dodging bullets.

"I think Ikaruga is pretty tough. It is like a modern version of Galaga that some Japanese company made."
Exactly why I mentioned Psyvariar Revision earlier. The difficulty gap between playing for survival and playing for score is massive with the Psyvariar games (in that playing for score makes it a far more trying game), but really playing for survival is really dull compared to playing for score. However, it does give you a chance to learn the joy of elaborate bullet patterns.kengou wrote: Psyvariar 2 also gets a mention for being pretty easy. The secret to Psyvariar is letting that screen fill with them bad guys...

I definitely put a vote in for Psyvariar 2. It was one of those games that is still a challenge, but looks harder than it is.kengou wrote:I vote Battle Bakraid, I can get to the final boss rush in the normal course in just about every playthrough since I started playing. I don't get how Darius Gaiden is an easy 1CC. Especially since losing one life knocks you down an entire weapon.
Maybe I'm just mentally retarded and suck at video games. It's bad enough that I've ran out of life or had to turn to FAQs on every case in Apollo Justice when there are people who can beat it on their first try while getting penalized only twice. I mean hell, AJ's even easier than You Have To Burn The Rope.

Checklist for an easy DG 1CC:gs68 wrote:I don't get how Darius Gaiden is an easy 1CC. Especially since losing one life knocks you down an entire weapon.
1. Are you playing with autofire?
2. Are you taking the ABDHLQV* route?
3. Do you know how to control rank?
Proof that it really is easy once you answer yes to all these questions is here.
* — Initially was ABDGLQV, which I forgot was harder.

Why do people keep pointing to that thread as proof that DG is easy? As I said before, the only reason that many people finished it was because of the massive upgrade to the autofire thanks to the Saturn code (aka cheat) and MAMEPlus' autofire settings.moozooh wrote:Checklist for an easy DG 1CC:gs68 wrote:I don't get how Darius Gaiden is an easy 1CC. Play the game with the default autofire rate, and take that very same path. It's not nearly as easy (or "broken" as people called it back then, thanks to the autofire upgrade).
Granted, maybe I'm the only one to think this, and everyone else here can blow through the game without the uber autofire set up. But given all the comments about how that autofire boost hurt the game, I'm inclined to believe otherwise.
I have to sign that. I am anything but a super good player, and even i reached stage 5-1 with one credit.Necronopticous wrote:I hate to break it to you, man, but Espgaluda is one of the friendliest shmups out there.
