it would be 'roke', since they have no /l/
There's no "r" either, technically. I guess maybe the sound is closer to R than L, but as a linguist I'm sure you could agree it's somewhere in the middle.

I guess the easy answer to the question would be "that's the way it was adopted". There really are no set rules for romanizing, and the Japanese are the worst at it if you can believe that.
I already ordered mine.
I couldn't justify purchasing it outright, so I started selling crap I won't play. I think in a week I sold enough to buy two almost! Shows you how much shit I had lying around.

No, there is definitely an /r/ in Japanese. It's just a tapped (or "flapped") /r/, and is very common in the world's languages (the other common type is the trilled /r/ as found in Spanish). The English /r/, in comparison, is very rare in the world's languages, as it is almost a vowel. FYI in the international phonetics alphabet the Japanese /r/ is written "r" (without the extra extension on the top of the vertical line), while the English sound is written as an upside down & backwards "r".

Type out that English "r" for me!

I'd love to see Johnny Tanaka saying "Pero versus Perro" in his Spanish class.

I don't think the font would show here. So here's an img of the IPA symbols:

Image

Top one is the English R, middle is the trill R, bottom is the Japanese tap R. We have a similar sound in American English in the middle of words like 'butter', but most speakers aren't aware of it because it's non-phonemic (=a sound that doesn't distinguish meaning) in English.

That was a joke really. Didn't know they had a character set for it. Sounds like it would be a bitch to type in.

Yeah, it is a bitch to type. Here's the full IPA chart:

Every formally trained linguist has to memorize this. Once you do, you can write the sounds from any of the world's languages. :)

Anyway, back on topic, are you going to the loke test, GP? If so, what day?

Yeah, I think I'm going to swing by tonight. A colleague is in town, so I'll go have dinner w/ him, then sneak over there around 10PM or so. I assume 2ch will have feedback way sooner (maybe even now, but unlikely).

I've been checking 2ch regularly, not much there except a few crazies saying stuff like "Cave is doing so bad in their business that Yagawa has resigned, and they're using the left over [MMP] PCBs to program BL"! Orgleblorgleblah!!

Yeah, Yagawa must have gone to the other company that still makes 2D arcade shooting games. Such dipshits.

The first real Black Label info is trickling in from 2ch:

-Original is supposed to have some elements from Maniac, but no one has really been clear on this yet (one guy said it's like they took 1.5's original and maniac modes, combined them, and then divided them by two - whatever that means). One thing that is clear is the amount of gems was increased, so it's higher in scoring. Also, if you bomb, your stage counter gets reduced to zero! That's a really brutal bombing penalty.

-Maniac mode is more or less the same. Same scoring system.

-God mode feels like a slightly more difficult Maniac mode. One guy said he got to stage 3 on his credit.

-The new version of Palm does not have Abnormal Palm's laser (A shot).

More info to follow.

More BL info, this is looking like a very different game now:

-In original mode, once the stage counter maxes at 9999, it starts flashing, and apparently you get more points during this time.

-In maniac and god modes the counter flashes at 9999 as well (10000 in god), but it's unclear as to what effect it has here.

-Original and Maniac modes both have slightly faster bullets now, making them a bit harder.

-God mode is more like Ultra but with slightly less bullets. Also interesting is that they have adapted Maniac's scoring system, but the multiplier maxes out at 30,000 instead of 9999!

-Amazingly, the version of Reco in this game is based on Abnormal, but her lock-on shot has been greatly improved and is very easy to use now.

-Palm's shot is like Normal from 1.5, while his laser is sort of a mix of Normal and Abnormal.

-Some enemies have been added to parts of stages.

This is the bummer about a loke test like this.
Queue forever: Only play 1 of 3 modes. :?

I got some fly GOD vid b4 I got busted. It's basically between Maniac & Ultra w/ Maniac's scoring. The counter goes to 30k though.

God mode's balance seems perfect for maximum fun, all the news about Black Label sounds great. Maybe I'll play some plain vanilla watered down Mushihimesama on my PS2 to celebrate :D

i agree God mode looks like fun, definetly more manageable for us poor players, ive still only made it past the 1st stage on Ultra 1.5 2 or 3 times on my first credit

Capturing it now. I'm also doing a little write up. All in all, i'm really excited about this. There are some changes in enemies, (IE: more of them) across all versions that will effect scoring. The ass clowns at Hey hooked it up to a 100hz HD display though...effectively killing it w/ the lag. I was the only one that played Maniac, and I died (no shit) on the first bullet.

If I'm not mistaken, this is the first black label that has added extra enemies.
Wrong. Ibara BL had extra enemies (stage 5)
But nevertheless a nice write-up. thanks a lot! :D

excelent stuff GP \m/

lol, a couple of hours into the loke test and the highscore for original is +670mil and God +610mil (tho to be fair that HS seems to be able to skyrocket rather quickly).

another thing i noticed is they darkened the colouor palette for the gems?

*fires up 1.5*

I guess they're going to change the score cap what with there being so much more gold now. Also I wonder how Shin Larsa is going to work... replacing the entire final boss or just one or two of the TLBs?

My PCB of 1.5 is meanwhile chilling at the local post office. :?
