We're talking about the Cave that makes arcade shooting games.
Yeah but they released a fair few games on the Ps2 and that was the system most likely to give them the most sales given its market penetraction at the time.
In this era - its currently the Wii.

I'm not stating they will, but its nice to speculate.

Well... Alpha System and Treasure's projects are known about. I haven't heard anything about Cave working on the 360 though...

Wouldn't surprise me though given how big XBLA is getting.

PS2 install base: Bigger, and a shitload of people that would pay for an "arcade" game. Their sales still sucked in comparison to a real release.
Wii install base: 8 people that will pay for an "arcade" game... 10 million that want to wave that stick around.

I think those numbers speak for themselves.
And so what? Another non-shooting game might.
Does anyone really care about what Cave's non-arcade group puts out? Their other departments make absolute shit.

That's not why I said that.

What I am trying to say is that Cave is not some sort of a monolithic company. Just because they specialize in arcade shooting games doesn't mean that they only make arcade shooting games.

One day they decided to make an arcade puzzle game, and people were surprised. Another time they decided to make a Valkyrie no Bouken clone for cellphones and people were once more surprised.

There will come a day when they will surprise us again. When that day comes I plan to NOT be surprised, because I will be expecting a surprise. It's obvious that they are exploring different directions -- (Mushihime Tama, Loveny no Ehon, Deathsmiles). If these three brand-new directions prove successful, who's to say that they won't explore even more?

Mushihime-tama: Uo Poko w/ Reko
Death Smiles: Another hori (they already did it w/ Progear) It's still arcade shooting... this isn't a new direction in the least. Ibara was far "newer" when it came out.
Ehon: The only "new" direction... coincidentally and it will have zero appeal to what people here would want.

I'm not saying they won't put a console game out. I don't think it's going to be anything shooting related though. If it's good, cool, but I won't hold my breath.

You are splitting hairs here. Okay, Tama was not a new direction, but Uo Poko was. And so was Loveny no Ehon (as you acknowledge) and so is Deathsmiles (which you don't).

On the subject of Deathsmiles, it is a new direction not because it's a hori, but because it will play very differently from Ikeda's games. This I learned by reading the Ishimura interview translation on some site called gamengai.com. You should check it out when you get a chance, it's rather cool!

Yeah, Cave works slowly, so holding our breaths is not advisable. But they do try new stuff, and they are bound to make a move to consoles one day or another. If mediocre games like MileStone's and Warashi's shooters can make money on consoles, Cave could make 10 times as much if they were smart about it. I think that the day they leave behind the SH3 board and move on to something more suitable for quick and easy ports will be a great day indeed.

CAVE isn't publishing (or porting) the X360 titles, and they certainly weren't what Famitsu was reporting about so long ago, but close enough. Give icycalm the point, he needs it.

Damn Icycalm I solute you... if I were you i would have thrown my computer out the window half way through this thread... (which I'm just now realizing was almost 2 years ago LOL)

I think the failure of Xbox360 in Japan doesn't really make a difference when it comes to which console will get the new shmups. Remember that Microsoft has a nice fortune to piss away - winning over niche gamers can help in the longrun, especially shmup gamers who probably are slow to jump onto the current generation of consoles.

Regardless, my passion for the industry died when Sega's masterpieces for the Xbox bombed and all their teams broke up, and when Treasure's GBA games severely fell short of my expectations... even if Radiant Silvergun 3 was announced for PS3 or X360 I'd probably just scratch my beard and mumble "cool.." Sorry Icy, I'm just not an optimist like you... :(

i just noticed that in this month's Edge magazine (UK), the back cover advertising what will be the main feature of the next issue is the Treasure 'Warning! No Refuge' screen. it could be that they are doing an article on ikaruga (for the impending release on XBLA. but that seems weird, as that page is usually just to show features/articles, rather than just a review etc. they sometimes do get good exclusives (like SF4); and they have shown the shmups some good lovin' in the past (large article and exclusive interviews with G.Rev, Milestone, and Triangle Service). so i'm kinda gettin' over-excited that they may have an interview with treasure about their new shooter... or, it might just be an interview with maegawa about ikaruga plus general chit-chat. anyways - next issue is out in 8 days

(i don't buy the magazine, a colleague does :P )

edit: here's the article on G.Rev and co if anyone wants to read it: :)
