Gunbird-2 looks really good to me. The graphics and music might not be good from a technical point of view but they just seem to work very well with the game. An effective scoring system above this adds alot to this game. Also, one thing I don't understand is that why dodonpachi gets so much praise. It is a good game but thats about it. I don't know how its better than games like gradius-5, ikaruga, batrider etc.

I just find the overall game design dull, so I doubt the extra weapons would help. I was just playing "Gunbird 2", and realised that I don't think it would help. It's just not for me.
If you are looking for variety, then try Sonic Wings Limited. You get 12 ships/characters, plus two hidden bonus ships, each with its own unique fire, charge, and bomb! Some of the charge shots are actually avoidance manuvers (like jumping over bullets, or swiping an option in front of you). Hows that for spicing things up? Although its not exactly Psikyo, its basically the same developers who started the series.

[edit] I took out the comment about high production values, I think they spend 90% of their animation budget on the first level alone, the rest are quite bland. The background music is high quality though. [\edit]

Original Original Mode with 2 loops and unrelevant final bonuses? Sounds not bad at all!

Hmmmm...

Never thought of it that way.

Perhaps a more suitable contest would be "Psikyo up til 2001 VS cave up til 2001".

Sonic Wings/early Psikyo stuff was great in it's day. You had to be there.

Are you on drugs... While Psikyo did some nice games they are all from the same template and there are very few series amoungst them. They are not diverse at all!

I know nothing of Raizing, but the Cave games I've tried seem more playable than the Psikyo stuff.

Psikyo games start off very fun, but the bosses turn cheap after a certain point. Hit box (and craft) often seems too big, especially when a boss decides to fire off a lightning fast circular spread and you have maybe .75 seconds to put your craft in a safe spot between bullets.

Psikyo also seems to use a fairly static scoring system, so it doesn't seem like there would be as much replay value after the stages are all memorized. Clearly I'm not at this point, it's just the impression I get.

However, my wife really likes playing Psikyo games with my HRAP 2. (On Monkey difficulty.) She doesn't know Psikyo or any other developers, but whenever I'm playing a shmup and asks to try it, it always happens to be a Psikyo game.

Sol Divide is the ultimate game I did play from Psikyo. For me no Cave shmup I did play can compare to it although they are good. so I vote for Psikyo

Got to go with Cave here. There is a level of artistry and fun in Cave titles that seems to be sorely lacking from Psikyo titles.

Maybe you haven't put much time into many scoring systems, but I'm pretty tired of it (needing to devote dozens of hours refining boring details to be any good at all). I can play Strikers II whenever I want to play a shooter and enjoy it without having to re-memorize a stage.

What's with two lame ass Cave-boosting threads today?

I'm still pretty early in my revived shmup career, but i have a feeling i'll be of the Rob school of thought on this one. One more defender joins the ranks of the minority! ;) Yay Psikyo! Yay Raizing (or Yagawacave)!

I don't mind chaining, I find it intuitive. Of course I don't chain whole stages that way, but it's still fun to delay some kills or switch weapons at the right time.

it's probably more unforgiving, but it's still pick up and play.

I kinda think Cave reached their peak with the DoDonPachi/ESP Ra.De/ Guwange thing, so that kind of makes me sad. But they do put out quality games overall. The newer ones(Mushi Futari/Galuda 2/ Death Smiles) looks like they would be right up my alley, but sadly I won't be able to play them. I'd still rather look at a superplay of a Cave game than play a Psikyo game.

That may be overdoing it, but I really don't like them.
