Indeed it does. I found his new game by google-ing "Freeware Shmups". Most of the stuff I found was old or garbage, but I stumbled upon a forum that mentioned the game.

It's womewhat fun, but is more of a little distraction than anything else. But it took me a while to figure out 1/2 of the controls...of which there are 2.

Recca was made by about 5 dudes, not just Yagawa, although he did the game design and programming.

From what I know, summer carnival was a yearly event where people compete for the highest scores and such, and every year they had specific games. I dont think that meant these games could only be bought at the event or somthing like that, they were still normaly distributed in stores. I'm not 100% sure though.

Every summer from the mid-80's to early 90's a nationwide gaming tournament was held in Japan. Most of the competitive games played were shmups but few sportsgames made the mix as well. Often in these games a caravan mode where the gametime was limited to two or five minutes were played.

For some of the games a special version for the competition was used which had the caravan mode only (and these hu-cards fetch a high price on eBay), but the regular versions (which include the caravan mode, except in Gunhed) of the games were normally distributed.
No matter how good a game is, somebody will always hate it. No matter how bad a game is, somebody will always love it.

I remember having zip-files of Starfox (or Starwing in europe) that included "Super Weekend competition" roms, with stripped-down selection screen and a huge score display in the upright corner (and no continues). Seems to be similar to those "caravan" modes. I guess the "short game" option in Super Aleste is a caravan mode too? I learn something new every day :)

Starwing Competition Edition is indeed the scaled down score attack mode. I remember the competition actually, it was held in a few major department stores in the UK (Fenwicks being one of them), and as usual, it was a contest to see who could score the highest in one shot. I took part (I think I was about 14 at the time) and there was quite a lot of people there, which could only mean good publicity and marketing for Starwing.

I think the game is a time attack setup, with (to memory) two longish stages, one standard ground-skimming stage like the original first level, and one set in space. You'd always run out of time while in the space level.

HMV held the Starfox64 competition for C&VG Magazine a few years later, but on the regular version of the game.

As for the many Caravan/Carnival Editions, if I remember correctly, there is Recca ('92), Nexzr Special ('93) and Alzadick ('92), and maybe a couple more that have slipped my memory. The SNES had a Carnival Shooting Collection, with Star Soldier, Star Force and Hector '87. I have The Caravan Collection, Nexzr (original) and Alzadick, and I'd love a complete Recca for my collection, but not at the RSG-level prices they command on YAJ. -_-;;

Its a shame the Summer Carnival stopped so early. Would be an excellent event to be in had it continued going until the present day.

Thanks for the Caravan Shooting Collection tip. ...there even is a Super Bomberman Caravan edition. Seems like this whole caravan thing was extremely popular back then!

It was. It was a pretty good concept for a tournament - take an existing game, make a time/score attack version, and use it in an exclusive competition. Bonus! If only it was still going now, imagine the kind of games that might be Carnivalised today...

Speaking of Starwing Compy Edition, check this out.
