I just watched Russ's (retrogamecorps) impression video and it appears he was able to get his digital content mapped over to the switch 2, but he did very little software impressions (it wasn't the point of this video).

I'm considering grabbing a switch 1 oled as an upgrade from the original one I bought 7 or so years ago, but the retrogamecorp switch 2 comparison to the switch oled makes it seem like there isn't a stark difference between the two
Every Switch game that I own has run well so far. I've tested a bunch of stuff, including Grid Autosport, which isn't supposed to run at all, but it does if you launch in airplane mode. All of the shmups so far play exactly as I'd expect them to on the Switch 1, and some of them (subjectively!) feel just a tiny bit smoother. Strikers 1945 II for example feels very slightly less hockey-puckish. I played M2's Esprade via download and DOJ via cart and they feel exactly like playing on Switch 1.

Big laggy games like Civ 6 and Dynasty Warriors 8 are transformed on Switch 2. 60 fps, max resolution all the time, the works, and lots of these games haven't been patched yet. Seems like the S1 emulation environment leaves a ton of headroom available for dynamic scaling, especially for GPU-bound titles. Beyond that, controller input feels cleaner and more responsive across the board, and all wireless communication is MUCH faster, with download speeds on par with Steam on PC.

I tried deleting all my Super Mario 3D World + Bowser's Fury data and when starting it, it forced me to update. Not sure why, but since someone obviously got it working without an update (as per the DoesItPlay post), it suggests to me that there will be lots of wrong information on this in the future because of bad testing methodology.

Other than that I'm mostly happy with how backwards compatibility works on the games I've tested.

Does the Switch port of Shinorubi still have the 30 fps framerate issue if played on the Switch 2 setup?
Quoting me seems like you're asking me and I have no idea, nor do I know why you would suspect I would have a random game like that.

But if it was unstable 30 or 60 FPS before, I would expect that 30 or 60 FPS to be stable with the Switch 2. That seems to be the trend.

Games going from 30 to 60 without a patch are very unusual (strangely enough, there is one case: Mario and Rabbids Kingdom Battle).

Another bit of unfortunate news for physical collectors: Switch game cards are slower than the internal storage, both for Switch 1 and Switch 2 games, so expect a bit longer loading times. I can't fault Nintendo for this one though.

Also I'm not as convinced as everyone here there will be an OLED version later on. Not sure why it's treated as a sure thing, especially not with a company like Nintendo. I would say it's 50/50.

I agree that OLED isn't a given.

The XBOX branded ROG Ally also ended up LCD, and the marketing guy at ASUS stated that VRR on OLED uses a lot more battery power, so they decided to stick to LCD.

After the DK Bananza Direct, I feel like that is the killer app the system gets. Not MK World, oh no, that looks like it blows soft eggs. Rewind function in a multi race game? Scoff!
What I find telling is how Bananza features a "2 Player" mode: with Game Share, that can even be played with an original Switch! Huh. So it's strictly speaking not about technical excuses, they need big gunboats exclusively...

Had no interest in it and now I do. It's got a sort of Nintendo God of War vibe about it. I'm sure I likely blast through it over a month and trade it.

DK Bananza looks fun for a day or two, and I'd expect the game to feel like work after that much like it was the case when going for 100% in Mario Odyssey.

I've just seen a commercial for it and now all interest is gone. It's laying on the schmaltz a bit too thickly for my liking.

After watching the DF review and the MVG video, coupled with the fact there are no games I actually want from the launch line up and an acceptance that I actually don't even like Mario Kart that much, and that Strania aside, I haven't played the Switch that much in the past year - I'm putting this on pause. The money's burning a hole in my pocket, so I think I'm going to get a Legion Go for now and stick NetherSX2/Dolphin/Duckstation/Redream/MAME/PPSSPP on it.

The fact that Nintendo can brick these things sure is great for the second-hand market, ain't it. Man, remember when we used to own stuff. That was a trip.

One little annoyance is I hear that you can't shut off the mini-map in GTA free roam mode in Mario Kart World, while you are able to shut off the race map in race mode. It's just amusing that you can't shut off the distracting useless minimap but you are able to shut off the non-distracting useful race map... I didn't think either would be possible, but that one is, it's like they're just bullying me personally.

Also eliminating the functionality in multiplayer that people were using to play classic grand prix mode, it's crazy yo. It seems so simple: Have a grand prix mode for racing on tracks, have a knock-out mode for cross-country. And yet.

The Mario Kart World patch is hilarious. Even Nintendo's biggest shills and simps are mad about it. :D

So is this thing good or...?

100% complete honesty: I want one JUST for Metroid Prime 4. Yes, I can play it on Switch, but I don't want to. I want the best version of the game, and that's the Switch 2 version.

I'm holding out for a h/ware revision with a better screen and hoping the input lag issues are resolved with GC games.
I was 100% set on getting one as soon as the release phase calmed down. I just can't reconcile paying €600 for the console and Pro controller just to play MKW and Fast Fusion on a cheap screen. I don't want the third-party release games or DK Bananza.

That's a you thing. I'm hoping you're aware of that, just saying.

I'm not buying it because I have a huge backlog of other Nintendo quality titles that aren't that expensive.

Speaking of expensive, I got the Pro 2 controller. Yeah the quality doesn't match up to the price, at all. It is the only controller that can wake the system though.

While a bad thing, it's not new to the Switch 2, so I'm a bit confused about all the press it's getting. And they're not bricked, just banned from online services. Like other consoles before it.

Account bans and more verification of new accounts would make more sense than device bans.

And obviously, the way Nintendo is banning for flash cartridges lead to some worries about buying bootlegs unintentionally and getting banned for that.

I really wouldn't hold my breath on that. Emulators do generally have input lag, and Nintendo aren't even known for particularly good emulators.

It's definitely a luxury product for people with money to burn. You're definitely not getting the same utility value we got out of the Playstation 2, a DVD player and the golden age of 3d games.

Of course the library will be fine. Another two or three Marios, a Smash, a Zelda or two (but not a Zelda 2 successor), an Animal Crossing, some Metroid, maybe another Fire Emblem, etc. (Not Earthbound, though. That's a special sometimes food. And by sometimes food, I mean we're never seeing it or a spiritual successor from Nintendo ever again.) Some jRPGs.

The full development of the NPU would be the next big thing in video games. We could have real virtual people in these things, and truly 'forever' games personalized to a player. (On the other hand, there's the creepy aspect of basically having a person inside this box just sitting around. Eh, we'd get used to it fast.) One major example would be open worlds that aren't empty. Whenever I see the little 'mini games' sprinkled around an open world, I always feel like how they try to enrich the environment of zoo animals by smearing peanut butter on the underside of wood somewhere or tossing a beach ball in there. It's not really as in-depth or interesting as existing within a true ecosystem.

In that respect I do kind of feel like the Switch 2 is like the Neo Geo. If you really love these games and got the money, go for it. For those of us with massive towers of backlogs of stuff to kill time with, eh.

Interesting. I'm not familiar with being able to factory reset these things to 'fix' them, do the Switches differ on that front?

Considering how much they're pushed these key cards and internet DRM in general, it does feel like an increasingly pertinent concern.

I'm happy with 4 frames, 5 at a push, but according to this MVG guy it's 8 across all of the 3 NGC games.

@noodalls is going to check it when he gets back from vacation.

So I did some research, watching the annoying Youtube guy's description of what getting your Switch 2 banned means:

1) It's banned from logging in to your Nintendo account.
2) It's NOT banned from firmware updates.
3) It IS banned from game updates. This obviously includes downloading game key cards.

I think 1) and 2) are common, but 3) seems to be a Nintendo Switch 2 only thing. I wonder if it's possible to create a fake update server to bypass this, but it's way too early to tell.

I have to question if 3) is because of the stupid game key card thing, Nintendo looking for every way to save some bandwidth and not let people redownload 50 GB games if they can find an excuse to disallow it that they think won't be legally challenged.

It's obviously very bad, but there's some dumb sensationalism going on here, bricking a console means it's as useful as, well, a brick, hence the term. Using it to describe a system that can still play all games that are actually on cartridge is wildly misleading.

Canada only for now, but new Nintendo strategy, price Switch 1 consoles, accessories and games higher to make the Switch 2 prices seem reasonable?

The cynic in me thinks that Nintendo is milking their hardcore fanbase to doubledip on a second purchase by releasing the OLED version of S2 later, and/or they're using early buyers to effectively troubleshoot their hardware so they can improve on it on the OLED release.
The consensus on the net is that Nintendo went for a price point with the Switch 2 that the OLED would have increased and since the Switch 2 price point is already a sticking point with many they decided to drop back to LCD based on performance tests. The OLED will likely be released when they cut costs elsewhere.

I'm in the camp that Switch 2 was not necessary and I think Nintendo knew that, but the PC guys and the PS5/Xbox people were mocking switch users for an ageing underperforming system with the Switch. But for me Nintendo were in the best place with Switch. They had the best selling console.

The problem with increasing hardware specification is that some folk just want to play basic games and if the entree price is $500 that isn't a good deal for them. I was happy with Dreamcast graphically so 26 years later here we are with some games just having higher resolution and looking more glitzy.

If the Switch is the last sub $300 console system then the entree price into gaming for beginners is a big turn off now. Then you have the devs who are supporting newer consoles with games that don't get anywhere near topping out performance due to extreme development costs.

I understand that PC users want to max settings and run games that are beyond PS5/Xbox performance and this is why I think the markets should split again. The console market is no longer a viable model to me as an individual. If I were Sony/Microsoft or Nintendo I would absolutely stop making consoles in this generation. Because if you push the boundaries of whats possible for another 50 frames or 8k or whatever, it comes at extreme entree price points.

As a result of MK world being the only exclusive title on Switch 2. I have held off buying one. And thats scary because I have the money, I have had the desire to buy a Swtich 2 for months now, but in the end I decided not to.

And then, I hear all these things about bricking consoles and people already reselling their Switch 2's which tells me the launch is bad, even if the sales numbers are up.

In the 360/PS3 era my friend made Castlevania Lords of Shadow. It sold well, but the sales didn't tell the story of the players who didn't like it that much. When the sequel came out it bombed. That led to Konami looking at their model. They arrived at the conclusion spending a 100 million on a game wasn't for them and pulled out of the market. I think we will see more Konami's this generation. You just need to look at arcade games now, they look like games of 20 years ago. The model doesn't work because you would need to sell 100 million arcade units to profit so that ain't gonna happen with glitzy modern graphics development costs.

I'm worried for the industry. Although it looks like folk are sapping up the games and systems and making the industry billions, I fear that micro upgrades at great cost will kill it soon. And to top if off, you have emulation creeping up on 100% performance on consoles from 10 years ago. Of which current games are only just slightly better than.
This industry has become 2 dimensional as it transcended into a 3D world.

If I was a parent now and had a kid whose gaming revolved around Fortnite and some Switch games, I'd get them a $350 mini PC that could run Switch games at native res at around 40fps and less demanding Steam games and Dolphin with a Mayflash sensor bar for Wii stuff. These things will run Fortnite at the same level as a Series S with ease. Far better than the Switch version, which is horrendous.
I doubt they'd give a shit about older games, but I'd load it up with emulators/roms anyway. There's the obvious benfits of having a PC, plus Steam sales and free roms. I think these things are going to become more dominant as specs go up and prices come down. It wont be long before the current $800 mini PCs are replaced with more powerful gaming focused models and those with current higher specs prices drop. I dare say a Switch 2 emu is on its way too.

So basically a Steam Deck? I know it struggles to emulate some Switch games at 60 FPS, but 40 should be more attainable. I've never tried it and there really is no point because I can, should, and do use my Switch instead, but that basically seems to be about Steam Deck level. Plus handheld mode makes it feel like a bootleg/broken Switch that runs Switch games even worse than the Switch does normally I guess. Be sure to disable the unlimited framerate option in the Steam Deck's menu thingy to add noticeable additional input lag to bring it closer to the true Switch experience! I think this actually adds enough lag to make it worse than the Switch, in all honesty, so jokes aside, turn the unlimited framerate option on for EVERYTHING.

I wouldn't say so. I have one on its way so I can test it out for myself, but having watched videos about the €330 Beelink PC SER5Pro 5825U I've bought, it seems comparable with a Series S if not better, than a Steam Deck, particularly for Fortnite (which I play regularly on Series S) and Switch roms seem to run 1:1 with Switch inc SM Odyssey and MK 8 Deluxe at 60fps, and I've seen this thing running Forza Horizon 5 and GTAV at around 48-50fps at low/mid looking better than anything on Switch with great reflections.
If I didn't have a Switch already with around 100 games I paid for, there's no way I'd buy one over a decent mini PC. I don't have any ethical concerns re piracy - I don't care (my own creative endevours are openly pirated on Reddit - it's a part of life in 2025) and I don't care about portability. I buy plenty and dabble in a little piracy.
Gaming-wise I have a PS5/Switch/Series S, an OLED Andoid phone running NetherSX2/Duckstation/Dolphin/Redream/PPSSPP/MAME4Droid and an older £65 Dell Mini PC on the TV that will run Duckstation at max settings and MAME. It struggles with Dolphin/PCSX2, but will run God Hand, Contra Shattered Soldier/Neo Contra 720p and Gradius/Castlevania/Contra Rebirths at 720p, and will run Gradius V at 720p, but stuggles with certain sections. The Beelink should handle these at 1080p and allow me to run other games like Viewtiful Joe/Killer 7/The Twin Snakes/F-ZeroGX with shaders also at 1080p. And Switch and some Xbox 360 and PS3 games at 1080p or above. So yeah, if I had a kid this is what I'd get them instead of a Switch 2 and the promise of some $80 game card games, sometime.
