LOL I think I misread it somehow, it's actually clear the way he phrased it.

Re: M2 Toaplan collection
Speaking for myself, I've been getting beaten down a bit by Hishouzame after hearing all about how easy it is from you guys. I cleared Tiger Heli in less time (iirc, anyway). I genuinely think Hisho starts off harder than Kyuukyoku, you need a bit of memo just to grab power ups, and you never level up to the busted firepower that Kyuukyoku gives you. The biggest catch is that Kyuukyoku is so much longer. That and the bosses.Arino wrote: ↑Mon Aug 12, 2024 11:28 pm Nothing against you Steven, I value you sharing your knowledge, but speaking in general I think people talk too much about the difficulty of games. These rankings just create unnecessary barriers in your head. If you are an inexperienced player, the easiest arcade STG will seem just as difficult to you as the most difficult one.
Also, imagine someone asking for easier games and for instance they are told: "Play the Game Boy version of Darius, you will easily no miss clear the game on your first try ever!" - and imagine they play the game and don't clear it on their first try. Not on their second attempt either. Imagine how discouraging and mind fucking that situation will become for them.
Of course it's ok to talk about difficulty in games and it's something that is commonly asked about, I just wanted to point out this one side to it.

I second Steven's comments about the three collections. Same! is the logical choice. I had the most fun beating my head against Kyuukyoku, but I couldn't get into Get Star. You get Teki Paki no matter what, so you can't lose.

Re: M2 Toaplan collection
Gonna chime in with another vote for Hishou Same! Same! Same! if I had to pick just one. But this is a hard decision, the real answer really is ALL THREE.
My vote is primarily on the strength of Hishouzame, since I think S!^3 is a bit too hateful of a game for my tastes. Wardner is fine I guess, though I think the FDS version is a really interesting port.
Vol 1 has Kyu Tiger, which is freaking great and the obvious highlight. But Tiger Heli is maybe the weakest of the shooters in the three volumes (understandable due to the age, and still enjoyable, but still). I do think this volume has the most interesting selection of console ports though - I like seeing the comparison between the NES/MD/PCE versions. Get Star/Guardian is my least favorite of the non-STG bonus games in these three volumes.
And Zero Fire is perhaps the most consistent of the collections. Both shooters and Horror Story are really strong, whereas I have one clear favorite game on each of the other two compilations. I wasn't too familiar with Hellfire but kind of love it. And the PCE/MD ports of both games are fairly unique versions, and good quality.

Re: M2 Toaplan collection
I'll probably end up with all of them eventually! I'm way behind on my shmup backlog though, since I tend to hyperfixate on them and Ikaruga hurt me so badly. Still have GG Aleste 2 and 3 to finish on that collection.
I appreciate all the comments! These M2 PS4 releases really hold their value so no issue picking them up any time until they're in danger of going out of print.

Anyway Snow Bros Wonderland has a release date: November 28th. Website is also up: https://jp.snowbros-wonderland.com/
I know the trailer from last year makes it look really really bad, but having actually played it at Tokyo Game Show, it's waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaay better than the trailer made it look. They only had the PS5 version out on the floor, so the other versions are unknown, but at least the PS5 version is good.
Now that I think about it, the protagonists are the sons of the original Snow Bros game's protagonists... shouldn't this actually be called Snow Cousins? Uhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh........... probably best to not think about it too much.

I have no idea what that game is and the website is not helping me out with that question at all lolSteven wrote: ↑Thu Aug 22, 2024 7:29 am Anyway Snow Bros Wonderland has a release date: November 28th. Website is also up: https://jp.snowbros-wonderland.com/

It's basically 3D Snow Bros. Actually, not even "basically". It's 3D Snow Bros. There isn't much on the website, including the new trailer for some reason, but here is a new trailer.ryu wrote: ↑Thu Aug 22, 2024 7:48 amI have no idea what that game is and the website is not helping me out with that question at all lolSteven wrote: ↑Thu Aug 22, 2024 7:29 am Anyway Snow Bros Wonderland has a release date: November 28th. Looks like a fun action platformer I would have enjoyed playing on the N64 when I was young. Cool! (Steven wrote: ↑Thu Aug 22, 2024 8:03 amIt's basically 3D Snow Bros. Actually, not even "basically". Re: M2 Toaplan collection
Yeah, it looks like something of that era, which is probably a good thing. I'm not particularly fond of 3D platformers for some reason that I've never been able to identify, but I will definitely try this. Preorders opened today, but I'm going to hold off until they finish announcing all of the retailer-specific preorder bonuses to see if there's anything that I want. I hate retailer-specific preorder bonuses, especially if it's exclusive DLC for the game, but that's how it works in Japan now, so no choice.ryu wrote: ↑Thu Aug 22, 2024 9:46 amLooks like a fun action platformer I would have enjoyed playing on the N64 when I was young. Hopefully they'll finish Tatsujin Extreme soon as well. That's supposed to launch this year too, but somehow I doubt it will.

Re: M2 Toaplan collection
What sort of contract work has M2 been on lately? I think they did the DS emulation for that new Castlevania collection? If they're keeping busy that's fine, just don't want to hear about layoffs or something.
EDIT: Part of the Metal Gear Master Collection as well, so some semi-steady work for Konami then.

Earlier this year (I think) they had a booth showing off Truxton II and Outzone, but they weren't ShotTriggers versions yet. That and Aleste Branch, and the maybe never coming out Ubusana is all we know at the moment.
Re: M2 Toaplan collection
Aleste Branch sure, but what about Senjin Aleste? Is there no hope for a port?

Re: M2 Toaplan collection
Ratalaika will be at TGS with V-V and Slap Fight. No clue if they're the console versions or redundant arcade ports.
If we don't see M2 there with something I'm gonna just personally assume they canned it due to the milking out of Toaplan's catalog since the lineup started. We went from barely seeing these games to them being on everything and letting anyone work with them. (see: all the bitwave ports that are mostly messy still)
Really hope they do Psycho Oscar and Boogie Wings at least. And I'd still love M2 Toaplan stuff for home versions like say, the Snow Bros duo or PCE/MD Daisenpu

Re: M2 Toaplan collection
Not only did they do the DS games, but they also created a brand new Haunted Castle remake that's included in that collection. Basically, what Castlevania The Adventure: Rebirth on WiiWare was to the GB Castlevania The Adventure (but for Haunted Castle, obviously). We didn't hear a peep about that being in development until the day it was announced and launched, so who knows what else they might have under wraps.bobrocks95 wrote: ↑Fri Sep 06, 2024 11:53 pm What sort of contract work has M2 been on lately? Hey hey hey... you stop that right now!
Re: M2 Toaplan collection
Ratalaika's Gleylancer definitely has some noticeable not game-ruining input lag on Switch. Hopefully they do a better job this time.
M2's MGS1 is also the worst part of that entire collection. It's still missing support for analog controls and acts as if you are using the d-pad for everything.bobrocks95 wrote: ↑Fri Sep 06, 2024 11:53 pm EDIT: Part of the Metal Gear Master Collection as well, so some semi-steady work for Konami then.

It's really really REALLY small, but it's there. If you haven't played it a bunch on a real MD you probably won't notice it, and if you have played it a bunch on a real MD it will feel weird but playable.Sengoku Strider wrote: ↑Thu Sep 12, 2024 6:05 amDoes it? It's not bad, but it's enough for me to skip this, so I'd prefer for them to reduce it to match playing Slap Fight MD on a real MD at most. Maybe then I'd get it, and preferably if they added something new like they did with Gleylancer's new aiming thing. Otherwise, I'm just going to continue playing it on MD instead.
Re: M2 Toaplan collection
Wasn't there supposed to be some Toaplan documentary promised on Kickstarter years ago? I remember shelling them some serious money and now it's been quiet for a very long time.
Re: M2 Toaplan collection
He posts updates on Twitter mostly instead of using the Kickstarter page. Believe me, he's working extremely hard on that thing. I know he's probably going to release the Tatsujin commentary pretty soon if he can.

I can believe it. There were certainly times in the speed stage or stage 7 where I got sniped without being able to react and thinking I should have been able to. Gynoug just kicks my ass, I don't think I've beaten stage 3 yet. But I tend to just play a couple of games rather than going at stuff for hours straight.Steven wrote: ↑Thu Sep 12, 2024 6:07 amIt's really really REALLY small, but it's there. Switch. I don't think Gynoug's a bad port or anything, it just seems like a tough game that I need to sit down and really learn, but it appears to have pretty long stages.Steven wrote: ↑Fri Sep 13, 2024 4:58 amSwitch or PS4/5?Sengoku Strider wrote: ↑Thu Sep 12, 2024 5:19 pm I can believe it. Re: M2 Toaplan collection
I'm interested in trying Gleylancer on PS5 just to see how the input lag is compared to Switch, but not interested enough to actually buy it at its normal price. It is like 50% off relatively frequently, but I always forget to actually buy it.
Hopefully these guys fix the lag on their emulator for at least Slap Fight MD. Its previous rerelease on the MD Mini was pretty laggy as well, so hopefully it's at least better than that.
