Holy crap.
Play Fever SOS for an hour with the fastest ship, then go play DOJ.
It's like everything is in slow motion.

I like to use Speeds 2 & 3, or as I would like to say, the "Balanced" speeds. However, I would like to try out Speed 4, but I will probably die more thanks to me ramming into some bullet while quickly collecting the men.

I like the game, but other than the disco stuff, the game looks generic. I like the music tho'.
Also, I am drop dead bad at it, due to it's speed. I don't know how you guys can follow those bullets.

As far as Cave stuff goes- Ibara Black Label, Dangun, and Progear are some of my favorites. In Dangun and Progear's case- alot of the plain hate I see feels like it comes from "They're too different than what I am used to". I can't think of many shooters that are as fast paced as DF is- and I just love whenever someone brings it up.
Besides- I would (100 times over) rather have Disco theme than loli-panty theme.

Re: Why no love for Fever SOS (Dangun Feveron)?
The Cave titles that don't base their scoring mechanic on chaining are usually ignored. I think Dangun Feveron is great, but it does stand apart from most of the Cave catalog. I also think it plays closer to a Psikyo game, with faster aimed bullets as opposed to the slow curtains of bullets in DDP games.

Re: Why no love for Fever SOS (Dangun Feveron)?
I want to like Feveron more than I do, as I enjoy the silly theme and easy-to-grasp scoring system, but the amount of speed required to play the game decently (I dunno, has anyone ever posted a passable score with, say, a "speed 2" ship?) makes the game feel too imprecise for my tastes, especially without any sort of "focus" mechanic or the like.

Dangun is bloody amazing. Easily my favorite Cave shooter, even though it plays barely like a Cave shooter.
It's fast, it looks nice [well, the ships and whatnot are pretty damn generic, but I love how the sprites are done [remember when things weren't prerendered?] and I love the palette], and fun [totally subjective, but fuck that].
I did this once! Man, it was horrifying.
It felt like my ship was in cold molasses.

I like it. Not my favourite by a long shot but it's a fun game to play with mates. I wish Cave would do more games like this (though maybe less of that wacky disco theme....just a bit less).
Also, I believe not showing your current score and getting on the scoreboard annoys people - it annoys me a little bit but I remember a LOT of complaining going on when it was in one of the STGT years.

Its a good game, I enjoy it but other Cave games get more of my attention.
Another big fan of Progear here too. Such a nice looking game with some really good bullet patterns.
I wholeheartedly agree with this. Whenever I buy a new game friends ask "is that another of your japanese goth paedo games?" because of Deathsmiles, lolBattlesmurf wrote:Besides- I would (100 times over) rather have Disco theme than loli-panty theme.

CMPXCHG8B, I think you just missed the era. Many moons back, there was much adoration and discussion. Esp. when Venom was dedicated enough to go for the 1CC. Blew our minds when he said he was going for it with missiles. Turns out it was a great strat!

Re: Why no love for Fever SOS (Dangun Feveron)?
I love/hate Dangun Feveron. I love the music, the announcer, the space theme to every stage, and how it does feel VERY old school. What I hate about it is how it feels so unbalanced when trying to control the ship. It's like you're either too slow for certain bullet patterns or you're so fast that you run into enemies. At least this is what happens to me. Now what I actually LIKE in this game that involves the crazy speed is the score attack mode. That mode is mindless action packed fun.
Re: Why no love for Fever SOS (Dangun Feveron)?
Doesn't the secondary roll attack act as a focus mechanic like the ddp laser? Havent played dangun in a while but I remember using roll a lot because of it.BulletMagnet wrote:... especially without any sort of "focus" mechanic or the like.

Your ship goes the same speed regardless. On another note, I only just realized that the score items weren't tomatoes.Zaarock wrote:Doesn't the secondary roll attack act as a focus mechanic like the ddp laser? I might as well ask this here: I can't seem to access the Score Attack mode. ST says insert coin, hold A+B and press start. But the game won't respond to start while I'm holding down a+b... any tips?

Try setting A and B to the same button on your controller. For example, you could configure A to both z and c on your keyboard, B to x and c, and then use c just for the purpose of unlocking Score Attack.Moniker wrote:I might as well ask this here: I can't seem to access the Score Attack mode. Thanks - custom button did the trick. Strange since I've never hit a keys-pressed limit on my keyboard before.

Re: Why no love for Fever SOS (Dangun Feveron)?
This sums up my feeling rather nicely. I really want to like the game, as I think the theme, the music, and the scoring system are all ace (not so keen on the visuals which look like leftovers from DDP), but due to the speed required I never feel like I have 100% control of what is happening with my ship.BulletMagnet wrote:I want to like Feveron more than I do, as I enjoy the silly theme and easy-to-grasp scoring system, but the amount of speed required to play the game decently (I dunno, has anyone ever posted a passable score with, say, a "speed 2" ship?) makes the game feel too imprecise for my tastes, especially without any sort of "focus" mechanic or the like.

Re: Why no love for Fever SOS (Dangun Feveron)?
So, after spending some time with this game and getting a clear + decent score, I thought I'd give some thoughts on this from the perspective of a not too great/casual kind of player:
1. Dangun's movement is brilliant. Some people have complained about the game being imprecise, but it's not really. Moving fast allows you to speed kill enemies before they can fire, which "justifies" the movement speed and makes it easier to manuever because there's 1/4th as many bullets on screen when you're moving fast. Likewise, many of the boss patterns (with the exception of stage 2's annoying green spiral), are better suited to macro dodging, and are probably easier with a speed of 3 and 4 then 1 and 2.
The speed of the game is incredible once you get to grips with it. It feels like no other shmup (and certainly no other Cave shmup) in how over the top fast it is, in both player and bullet speed. Personally, the prioritizing of slow focus modes and tap dodging is what has put me off from the vast majority of bullet hell shooters, so DF's "thrilling" and "manic" sense of movement is in line with what I'd rather get out of my shmups. That alone puts it above the vast majority of Cave titles for me. However...
2. I do not recommend playing Dangun for score when you first start out. Everything I said above about the high movement speeds making the game easier? Goes right out the window if you don't have a basic idea of the stage layouts. If you don't know the enemy types and general stage layouts, then you won't be able to speed kill them and speed 3/4 will only hinder you with none of the benefits. For your first time, I recommend playing at speed 2 (which is fast enough to allow you to macro dodge stuff and still get that characteristic thrill of the game, but slow enough that you'll be able to maneuver through denser patterns comfortably), ignoring all the discomen, and just trying to clear. Once you're good enough to clear the game, you can near instantly transfer over to getting good scores on speed 4. I was simply blown away at how easy and fast it was to go from clearing the game with a score that didn't even make it onto the cpu leaderboard, and getting a top 15-20 shmups farm score on first attempt.
Knowing the level layouts and equipping speed 4 will allow you to completely change the way the game plays. It's really one of those games that evolves and plays very differently as you learn it. I suppose once you get to a high enough level, you can transfer over to Ship C with the Bomb Type, which would change the games playstyle even further.
3. There's a lot to appreciate about how different this game plays, beyond just the speed. The Roll shot is simply brilliant. Aiming at boss weakpoints with careful timing brings an amazing offense/defense balance to boss fights, which becomes nerve wracking during the more intense patterns. Enemies appearing in waves and rhythmically (left, right, left, right, think Cho Ren Sha) make memorizing much easier then most other Cave games IMO, plus the feeling when you successfully speedkill almost everything early and get a quiet moment because the game has nothing let to throw at you...beautiful. Enemy waves are clever and force you to move around a lot. etc. etc.
Really it's just a fantastic game. Easily in my top 5 now.

I agree, Dangun Feveron's one of the few games that feels really fast-paced and fun to me even during its easy parts. It just feels great to play, even if I suck at it (can't keep myself from trying to go for score and paying the price). I probably move around too much for my own good, though, as it tires out my fingers really quickly (maybe it's better-suited to stick or gamepad than keyboard?). The disco theme also perfectly suits the rhythm of gameplay - the stage 4 and 5 themes in particular are godly.
Re: Why no love for Fever SOS (Dangun Feveron)?
<3 dangun feveron. it was actually one of the first couple of pcbs that I nabbed. at the last shmups meet I actually got to stage 4 for the first time even though I throw it in the cab as an alternate to other games when I need a break. and then time attack ofc is a crowd pleaser.
congrats on the clear/score btw.

Re: Why no love for Fever SOS (Dangun Feveron)?
Out of the few CAVE games that I have played, Dangun is by far my favorite. Its frantic pace is really stimulating and engaging at a fundamental level and I think it managed to beautifully blend the shooting, dodging and item-collecting aspects of shmups in a way that makes all three of those fun. Well, getting the disco-men is not mandatory but collecting them just naturally makes sense I think, and it contributes to the enjoyable tension the game provides.
The music is awesome, of course. My favorite track would be the stage 3 theme, but 4 and 5 are incredible as well.
Congrats for the clear, Squire! Ain't an easy one.
I never managed to reach stage 5 more than twice, and this "low-score low-risk" strategy seems interesting but I am bit too OCD to let so many disco-men go on purpose.

Along with Deathsmiles anything and Pink Sweets, one of my least favorite Cave games. Ikeda should have taken it and fixed it before release. Patterns are sometimes annoying and don't make me want to keep at it and it doesn't really feel like Cave.
Re: Why no love for Fever SOS (Dangun Feveron)?
Fix it how? Adding slowdown everywhere and massive vomit streams of slow moving bullets? No thanks.

I mean fix it like change the patterns, feel and scoring system to be Ikeda. I know you don't like his games and that's cool and everything but all other Cave fans do like them. Also they didn't add intentional slowdown back in the 90s as far as I know.

Why would Ikeda change a game he had nothing to do with? Dangun was their second (third?) game, there wasn't even really an Ikeda style then.
