Why no love for Fever SOS (Dangun Feveron)?

Post by CMPXCHG8B »

I was discussing shmups with some colleagues today when the subject of "worst shmups you've ever played" came up. For some reason, Fever SOS (also known as Dangun Feveron) was among the top of the list. I've seen mixed feelings directed towards that game on this forum too, and it's rare they're positive.

So I have to ask- what is it about this game that people hate? What makes it crap? Or is it just one of those things that you trash because it's cool to do so?

Personally, I love the game. It's so goddam lighthearted that it rocks. Everything from the music to the announcer to some of the sound effects for the bomb actions is just so absurd that you can't take it seriously, and it's bloody fun as a result. Great graphics, great music, and the gameplay isn't bad either (if it is, I never notice it since I'm usually having such a good time).

So what is it? Why does it suck so much? I asked this very same question today, two of the four people had never played it (but they still agreed it sucked) and the other two couldn't come up with a reason other then "It's not Ketsui".

Because Cave fans tend to hate anything that plays remotely oldschool. Oh and UoPoko (MEOWMEOWMEOWMEOW).

It does not suck at all.

I love dangun feveron and it was the first cave game i played (somehow). I always got the impression dangun, esprade and progear were the 3 most unliked cave games (I never see progear anything ever).

Rubbish scoring system requiring you to spaz around the screen at the speed of light.

I think it's fantastic but it's definitely not for everyone. It plays like a crazy full-game-length caravan mode.

And come on, the announcer is awesome.

One of my favorite Cave games easily. Fast shmups are the best shmups. Also, I'm probably the only person on Earth who isn't really all that bothered by the MEOWMEOWMEOW.

I rather like Dangun Feveron, moreso because it plays so differently from the other Cave offerings of that era, IMO. It has that kind of weird Toaplan feel to it. Plus, the announcer is awesome, YES!

i always thought Feveron was revered as one of the best, but i guess i thought wrong? easily one of my favorite games ever, period. intense pacing, really gets you pumped up! the scoring system is simple and rewarding, especially when you pick up the powerups when you're maxed out. love the music, love the announcer, love the technicolor space background and funky bullet colors - and man, do those bullets ever haul ass!

if people find it that hard to appreciate maybe they just need to throw back a couple espresso shots before playing  it's literally a party in shooting format!

What I do like about this game is the fast-paced action, much like playing an average caravan game. Though I do like playing as Uo Poko. So therefore why is it? Why the 'BOOS' rather than the 'YAYS'?

No love? The "Which shooters click with you?" topic is still on the first page and there's plenty of love there.

Besides, how can there be no love when the scoring screen between levels yells FREEEE LOVE!? :D

As the easiest Cave shmup to get into in terms of scoring (collect the spinning dudes, shoot everything and don't die), I'm surprised it hasn't had wider appeal. There's also the disco theme, which is universally recognized as silly and kitschy.

I refuse to use the cat myself.

I just find it boring and I don't like the music.

Edit: Just played it to refresh my memory. It pretty much feels like it's designed to give you a seizure. There's no consistency to the colour of the bullets, the aura of the little collectable men flashes different colours, the background changes colours at certain intervals, the player ships move too fast even on the slower settings, and half the time the screen just looks like a clusterfuck of random sprites. Easily my least favourite Cave game.

I really like the aesthetic and pacing of the game but I just can't really play it to save my life. Granted, I've never really put a lot of time into learning it. It feels very....I dunno, Psikyo? The patterns and pace of the game are very un-Cave so I can understand why people that only play Cave games don't like it.

I've always thought it's mostly well regarded in this forum, and seems to be so considering the posts so far, so idk how you can generalize that here.

Great game IMO, very different from other cave games (a + already considering how many there are) and really fast paced with straightforward scoring.

Protip: Don't like Uo Poko? Don't play as him. As a house rule (not that anyone else in my house plays shmups), Uo Poko is banned. ;)

Dangun Feveron is always one of the shmups I show at STG 101, just because it's easy to explain the mechanics (specifically, playing for score), and of course, lol disco music

Yeah I've never used the cat more then like 5 minutes to try it out, mostly because i can never remember the code.

Whew.

I like Dangun Feveron because of the music, the gameplay, and well... The announcer.

Still, the speeds are a pain to handle, and I use 2 or 3. I'm okay with both, but I got to Stage 3 with Speed 2.

And the weapons are awesome! I like to use Roll a lot!

I love Dangun Feveron but its very difficult for me. Missing a single discoman makes me quit, and by stage 3 I found it pretty hard to "NDM" (no disco miss, hehe). I also find the run-ending randomness of certain boss attacks to be infuriating.

Love the pacing, music, graphics, and deceptive simplicity though. Definitely a board I intend to own one day.

I love Dangun Feveron. Nice to play it every once in a while when Cave stuff feels stale (which seems to be quite often nowadays).

Feels like a Psikyo game and the bullet speed is awesome.

Badass.

Personally, I`m not a fan. Its a good game, but I don`t like it for a few reasons:

- The disco aesthetic seems like its trying too hard to be kooky and wacky, but its just kind of dumb.
- I dislike the speed. Some moveability is nice (Exy in DOJ is pretty close to perfect), but to play this game correctly you need to be all over the place. It feels like I`m juggling bowling pins while riding a unicycle and thats not my idea of a good time.
- I hate that most of my deaths are from running into things rather than your traditional bullet pattern death that I`ve grown accustomed to. Granted, this is my fault, but I just get annoyed with this game. Anyone who`s ready to fire a learn2play my way can learn2blowme.

I agree, before actually playing it I didn't even realize Cave made it. I like the detail in the art, but the designs of the enemies overall are much more boring than the disco theme would lead me to imagine they would be. I keep thinking "maybe the next level will have crazy enemies".

That said, the bosses are pretty cool looking as far as vague robotic thingies go, and the general goofy energy of it has me coming back to it now and then. I also like how typically-dark outer space is so vivid in color for a change.
