Been meaning to upload some of the music from Zero Rei, and I finally did. Might do more later, or maybe something from Hatenkou

R-Type Leo may not be the pinnacle of the series but it's soundtrack is just so comfy.
Yes, I love the really "chill" feel of the soundtrack. Delta and Final both have that sort of high-intensity techno with occasional moments of calm and serenity, but Leo is so relaxed, it reminds me of a less pumped up version of the original Viewpoint soundtrack. Great stuff.

This is totally cliche, but Lightening Force is absolutely my favorite shmup of all time, and one of the many reasons for that is the amazing soundtrack. There are so many great tracks, but as a long time metalhead, my favorite has to be the obvious choice of "Metal Squad". Honestly, though, the entire soundtrack is fantastic and should be heard and appreciated by any fan of chiptune, especially those who enjoy the Genesis/MegaDrive sound chip.

Metal Squad has actually already been posted, but you can never have enough Metal Squad

Here's some more X68000 stuff: Hatenkou BGM 2
Make sure you listen to at least the 2 minute mark or so, there's a pretty heavy part around there

Impossible for me to pick a favourite on TFIV's OST, but two tracks that I always think need more love are "Stranger" and "Downright Attack." The former's nothing special compositionally but winningly relentless and violent, especially fitting if you know its bloody in-game context. The latter's abrupt shifts from staggeringly heavy trudges to full-throttle gallops and back are a nice bit of shooter BGM mini-theatre. I like how there's deliberately no real transition, just a blatant slamming of the gears - very characterful!

But yeah, whole damn soundtrack is great - uniformly high standard, over a very lengthy set, too. I'm very partial to Elemental Master and Blast Wind's OSTs but TFIV's is Tecno Soft's masterpiece.

Nice picks there, BIL. Also thx for enabling me to post again :P . Here's the default stage BGM of Zero Rei (you can choose which BGM to play with in the game, and there are also two different boss BGMs, plus two name entry BGM (one for if you beat the top score and one for otherwise). I think the developer was pretty into FM shmetal.)

I'm not going to link it since so many TFIV tracks have now been mentioned, but Space Walk is my easy to pick favorite.

Two favorite Cave tracks:

Ketsui, Suburb - Armored Green
Mushihimesama Futari, Sea of Frozen Crystals

Not enough Subterranean Animism in here. Have some Subterranean Animism:

Satori Maiden ~ 3rd eye (Satori Komeiji's theme, Stage 4 boss)

SA has my favorite Touhou soundtrack. I would post more from the game but don't want to flood this thread just yet.

Also, have one from Battle Bakraid:

The Advance (Desert)

YES. I would totally agree on that point, as well as the uniformly high standard. There's not a "bad" track in the whole soundtrack. If you include the Omake tracks, there are a couple that serve well as segue tracks, but don't really go anywhere, but overall, the whole thing is absolutely genius.

Another of my favorites from this game is actually Omake 8, which would have been great in a level like Stage 6, or the Strite stage, with a more upbeat feel, brighter colors, and a less imposing atmosphere. So good. And let's not forget "Stand Up Against Myself", one of the single greatest credits/staff roll themes EVAR. After the epic journey you just went through, it perfectly caps the experience, and gives you something exciting to listen to, and it sort of evokes that epic end of movie experience with a true victory theme type of song. It's as iconic to me (and I'd wager other Techno Soft devotees) as the Final Fantasy battle victory theme, or the FF intro screen music is to some RPG fans.

Yeah, I don't know that there is any VGM that is better than TFIV. It's actually pretty hard to follow it up with anything other than more TFIV or maybe TFIII, but I will make an attempt with something from the X68000 version of Bosconian. I discovered this the other day when I happened upon some gameplay of X68k Bosconian on youtube. I don't believe that the original arcade had constant BGM.

Never enough cheese-metal! Get your Bic lighters out for the GREATEST ENDING THEME!

Lords of Thunder (Sega CD version) - Ending

I think the TurboGrafx version features better guitar playing, but the Sega CD version has better sound quality and an extra bit at the end.

Granada OST - hard for me to pick a single track, but Windy Avenue aptly demonstrates the sort of bubbling energy you could grill steaks over. Such a busy tune, with a monster chorus hook superbly built up and detonated.

In-game these songs make me wanna tank faster and faster until I get into terrible difficulties. :3 Then I watch Enhasa's Mania run so I can l2p while enjoying that BGM.

NB: SOMEBODY CALLS IT "GOD OF AFRICAN CONTINENT." ANOTHER CALLS IT "GHOST OF SOLDIERS." ONLY THOSE WHO ACTUALLY HAPPEN TO SEE IT KNOW THE TRUTH.

Goddamn Duel of Top (TFV redux of "Lightning Strikes Again") still gives me goosebumps.

>ENEMY APPROACHING
>SUBNAME: FIRE LEO 04 "RYNEX"
>THIS IS WHERE IT ALL BEGAN

Just wish the boss battle itself did more justice. :/ The preliminary chase should've been expanded into a proper dogfight. I always imagine the perspective rolling to overhead, Border Down-style, with the Rynex tearing along in the fore/background layers unloading the classic TFIV arsenal and occasionally swooping in for a Thunder Sword kill. All taking place around the Judgement Sword mothership, ofc.

/NERD DREAMZ Image gimme that Elemental Master sequel for Saturn while we're at it

Wolf Fang music is wonderful. Exemplar of DECO manly 80s action BGM. Always been partial to "SLAUGHTER MACHINE" myself, killer accompaniment to some knock-down drag-out mecha boss battles. Love how it shares an OST release with Tumble Pop of all things, bahaha. Check out Skull Fang's Saturn redbook audio for some good Vapor Trail and Wolf Fang arrangements.

Speaking of which...

Morning Kisses

I LOVE that rolling dogfight background. Unique way to add something to the game while keeping the actual gameplay traditional.

One of the other classic shmup soundtracks that perhaps doesn't get as much love as it should is that of Viewpoint on the Neo Geo. I'm talking the original arcade and CD release. Some great dance tracks on that, like Not There At All, Ricochet, and Mes Volutes Bleues. What a great soundtrack, and one that I listen to frequently just as background music.

Stages 4 and 6 are easily the best songs on the ost. HM to stage 1 boss theme.
You're sure to be in a fine haze about now, but don't think too hard about all of this. Just go out and kill a few beasts. It's for your own good. You know, it's just what hunters do! You'll get used to it.

You're right if this soundtrack is great, shame to me for not playing this game past the 1st stage.

Also, the arranged version and the mashup with Michael Jackson (fits like a damn glove). 8) 8)

EDIT: I really dig the Raimei's Theme from 19XX: War Against Destiny: is chill and slow for an early boss fight.

Was just watching a superplay of Radiant Silvergun to see what the game's like (what a strange game...), and this part of the soundtrack stood out to me.

UPL's Omega Fighter is surprisingly good for a no-name (at least as far as shmups go) 80s dev. The music isn't bad, either!

I don't think I'd call UPL a no-name dev, they made quite a few 80s hits. Ladybug, Mr.Do!, Ninja-kun, Mutant Night, Atomic Robo-Kid. As far as shooting games go, Omega Fighter is definitely their best though. Really solid soundtrack as you said.

Yeah, probably just more or less unknown to me (unlike, for example Toaplan, Taito, or Namco or something). Doesn't really mean much, in any case, as I was not alive at the time, and am not terribly knowledgeable in 80s shmups by any means

EDIT: more music! Some BGM from the Sharp X1 game Dialide, which I can't, unfortunately, find much info about: https://youtu.be/-lSHAUMTe3c
Actually all of the "Original Sound Trucks" are pretty sweet.
