I'm not sure, but I don't think you'll get more.

You just said it yourself! Even if you don`t go for a 1cc, you should set yourself a credit-feeding limit. Sometimes I do that with especially hard shmups, put in 3 or 5 credits and see how far I come with them. But after that, I don´t use any more credits.

Yup, I dont just play through on unlimited credits, but soemtimes when mates are around who are not hardcore shump fans then they will want to have a good old bnlast for the fun off it.

Well, then let them try to get as far as possible with one credit. Then beat them. They will think "This can`t be that hard" and fail. This way you will motivate them to get better then you. Letting them crediting their way through it is not going to let them feel what shmups are all about.

This is the reason why I never got into beat-em-ups: We played Tekken 1 over at a friends house and the person who would massage all the buttons at the same time the fastest usually won. That it, until I found out to step back, dodge, and then kick. I should note that none of us had ANY bemu knowledge - it was just a friend of mine and our girlfriends and we were quite drunk. So the lesson for most of us was "Why try harder?"

Challenging your friends to let them try if they are really that good at games that are "just shoot shoot shoot, this is pointless, this has been there since the 80ies" (quoting non-shmupping friend here) will surely get them a better approach to this genre then letting them dabbling around. I guess it`ll work! :)
