Softlanding - Screenshots + Info

Post by yokaze »

Hello board. I used to post and lurk on these boards a while ago and I guess it's just slipped my mind to come here for a long time -- but I'm glad I remembered they exist again. This is one of the best places on the net for shmup-related chat and I've been happily lurking for a while now. Anyway, so me and a friend are working on a shmup at the moment called Softlanding (demo soon). We're both pretty big fans of some of the more theatrical horizontal stgs like R-Type and Gradius, as well as curtain shmups like Progear and Mushihimesama.
We are coming close to demo release time, so I thought I would release a few screenshots around the place to get a bit of feedback as to the visual style of the game.

The scoring \ play system is as such: You have a ship with two firing modes. In the intial firing mode you will fire a normal (typically spread) shot. You have an option which will mirror your main ship's firepower. The option can be directed to come to your current location with the second button, hence meaning you can place it anywhere you like on screen. The option will slowly travel back towards your player's ship when left unattended for too long.
Alternatively, you can HOLD the second button, and the option will "cling" to the front of your ship, amplifying you shot power dramatically, but your ship's speed will be slowed down to a crawl.

You can multiply the score you are awarded by anything by collecting bonus items. The amount of bonus items that appear when an enemy is destroyed is directly related to the amount of objects on screen at once (bangai-o style). This will fill a multiplier combo gauge that slowly drains, and has a maximum value of making all points x128 -- so for scoring this is pretty damn important! :P

Any comments or suggestions you have relating to these play mechanics or any questions you have would be awesome, and I've attached a few screenies below as a taster of things to come! :)

Looks fantastic! :D

What format(s) do you plan on releasing this shmup on?

I'm also a bit of a lurker/rarely post, seems like a good time to chime in!

The game looks really good man. I love the style of the backgrounds and the enemy ships look fantastic. If I had to complain about one thing, the player ship looks a bit like a shoe, a women's high heel. Is that trails comming off the option? Sweet. :D

Please say there will be joystick support!

Yes, there most definitely will be joystick support, and yes those are trails coming off the option.. whenever you "call" the option, it will speed to your location with that effect. :)

I think you're the first person to make the shoe comment though... XD

It really does look like a lady's shoe. I'd definitely change that!

It indeed has a very Team 17 mechanical feel (Project X) - but it looks really promising. Also, the starship (very T17sque too :D) is really weird. I guess the bulky sphere is the option?
Alas, Ikaruga is going...

Undesired, unwanted them...
What makes them go?

gameplay sounds very promising, graphics don´t do much for me, but I´m not too obsessed with these either. The one thing I´m currently worrying about is your choice of color and contrast, meaning, the bullets don´t contrast very well from the background in those screenshots. For example, in the first and second screenshot, blue or green bullets would contrast a lot better from that background.
