Lol won't release the others unless this does well. Bet it won't even be translated.

I wonder how many user reviews will just be Japanese copy-pasta memes

I take it back, touhou should've stayed in japan
with a region lock
Re: Touhou 16 Steam release in 2018
I think games should stop having identifiable characters with personalities because it attracts the kind of people who wear strap on tails and write "erotic" stories about british TV

Absolutely. Zun has always shown indifference if not straight up contempt for Touhou fans outside of Japan. Remember when Touhou 14 was this big "get" for Playism and couldn't be localized to English per his request? I seem to remember him saying somewhere that he wanted someone he could trust or even himself to do official translations for his own stuff. He doesn't seem to mind fangames getting localized, either.

I guess that means he doesn't trust anyone, then?

The floodgates are open for the crappy fan games. But if you want to localize the real thing? God help you.Despatche wrote:I seem to remember him saying somewhere that he wanted someone he could trust or even himself to do official translations for his own stuff. There's nothing stopping anyone from localizing the real thing, not that ZUN or any developer has a responsibility to cater to the desires of translators.cj iwakura wrote:The floodgates are open for the crappy fan games. Re: Touhou 16 Steam release in 2018
Aren't there fan translation patches in like 5 to 10 languages available for every TH game official or not already ?
Zun willl never bother with legit overseas sales when like 99% of the games installed are cracked and patched original pc versions.
Not that the situation could have ever been any different, since his business 'model' is as old as the game engine and will probably follow him to the grave.

Yeah there are fan translations for all the games, but slim chance that any of them will become "official."
I wonder if Touhou would have had the success it had in the west, had it been more readily available through legitimate means (i.e. what's happening now, but earlier in the series' history). Part of its spread has to be attributed to the rampant piracy of the games, to the point where some sites even mistakenly referred to it as freeware. Ask people to pay for them, and give them little excuse not to do so (availability in your region is definitely not an issue anymore, if it ever was), and I doubt many would put their money where their mouth is. I don't know what the numbers from DDC's release on Playism were like, but we'll have a better idea with this release thanks to SteamSpy.

Just the developer himself. And he doesn't, but it's a pretty big slap in the face to go ahead and release it in raw Japanese.GSK wrote:There's nothing stopping anyone from localizing the real thing, not that ZUN or any developer has a responsibility to cater to the desires of translators.cj iwakura wrote:The floodgates are open for the crappy fan games. He's come to a US Touhoucon or something before, hasn't he? If so, that only makes this seem stranger.

Re: Touhou 16 Steam release in 2018
there's barely any text to translate and patches show up in the 1st week
and a good portion of the players doesn't even read any of the text that needs translating (and most of the "dialogue" is just meaningless banter anyways)
why bother

Re: Touhou 16 Steam release in 2018
Considering most of its fans are weeaboos who barely play the games anyway, I think yes. It owes its fame to imageboards, not proliferation of the actual game.Shepardus wrote: I wonder if Touhou would have had the success it had in the west, had it been more readily available through legitimate means (i.e. what's happening now, but earlier in the series' history).
I don't expect this one to sell very well since it's already been out for so long everyone who wants it has already pirated it, but maybe next time.

Re: Touhou 16 Steam release in 2018
Pretty much.
Some stuff just isn't made for some markets. I'd argue that a lot of Japanese stuff loses a lot of its context when you try to translate (or, God forbid, localize), and it's a miracle that we even have the situation we have now where these overwhelmingly Japanese things are being consumed by Americans like it's no big deal. It doesn't even have that "exotic" factor that things foreign to a given country usually has.
Right, he really doesn't. I mean, let's be honest here, we don't "deserve" localizations. The only reason there's even real demand for this stuff is because it's the internet; every wannabe pirate thinks they're a fan, and every wannabe fan thinks they "own" a little piece of their series and can make demands of the creator. Again, most of the people buying this aren't even going to play it.GSK wrote:There's nothing stopping anyone from localizing the real thing, not that ZUN or any developer has a responsibility to cater to the desires of translators.

Not when the only reason he's doing it is for whatever Japanese fans happen to be on Playism and Steam, which has become a thing in recent years.cj iwakura wrote:Just the developer himself. And he doesn't, but it's a pretty big slap in the face to go ahead and release it in raw Japanese.

Those are probably the same thing. What I'm surprised by is that he hasn't put anything up on DLsite... maybe it's the "atmosphere". Also curious if he'll end up doing PS4 or Switch releases eventually.

heard that dlsite is so shitty to release stuff on that you might as well pirate it

174 reviews in less than 24 hours.
Unless they immediately refund within 2 weeks I'd say the game is selling pretty well. (Better than most steam shmups at least.)
