How long do I need to study Battle Garegga?

I'm interested by the game Battle Garegga and I'd like to play it, but I don't want to become overwhelmed by the complexity. From what I've heard the game is more similar to Chess than your typical shmup, and before attempting to play it you need to know the intricate systems behind the game. How long do you think I should study Garegga before it's safe to try putting a credit in? I've been revising for 1 - 2 hours a night for the last fortnight and I feel nowhere near ready yet. I've printed out a large amount of reading material about the different ships, the rank system, the bosses and the various scoring techniques the game has, is it acceptable to pause the game and use these sheets as a reference guide during a play through?

Only then can you even begin to interpret the deep themes and detail of Garegga on anything beyond a surface level. It's still not going to be enough to truly appreciate it. In order to understand how Garegga relates to all the shooters that came before it, you must first play those a sufficient amount, make sure to clear at least 500 of them, I'll PM you a detailed list of which ones are more important to play to understand how important Garegga really is, relatively speaking. You see, Garegga is such a deep masterpiece that took everything that came before it and made it all completely worthless, but you must first experience that worthlessness, which will no doubt seem meaningful to you at first, before you can play Garegga (at least for 15~ years and with 20 mil is recommended btw, otherwise don't bother becuase you will not have any clue) Go through that list and reach the high score area indicated in my post. The experience will be instrumental to your enjoyment and understanding of the genius of Garegga. I'm also going to PM you a list of philosophers and which works of theirs you must read to understand Garegga. Read those in between playsessions. You are looking at a lifetime of work here, this ain't a fucking game, I hope you're ready dude, good luck.

You can start playing it at any time and be bored by the total lack of readily apparent mechanics.

Then you go watch the STG Weekly video about it and read the Strategy thread on this here forum so you can become aware of what the game's mechanics actually are. At that point you can kinda start incorporating scoring tricks and bits of rank management into your play at your own pace.

So yeah, just do literally anything else. It'll take you at least two hours to figure out what Battle Garegga as a game is even about, and those are two hours that you could spend learning how to cure cancer.

Don't even THINK about playing video games until you've at least mastered the simple art of counting every single bullet that you fire, and what it hits, combined with a metronome-like sense of timing, to calculate your rank in real-time. If you can't even do this, the cab will literally spit your quarter back out at you and insult you and your lineage.

This is unfortunately one of those things that MAME does not emulate properly. Which reminds me, if you're not playing the game on PCB in a Japanese arcade you're not playing it right. You also need to be playing it in the year 1996, so dig that time machine out of your closet.

You can enjoy Battle Garegga perfectly fine without having to know all the ins and outs of every little thing.

It's probably my fave shooter despite the fact that I am useless at it still (I don't put enough time into practise etc).

Just have fun, all you really need to know is don't go overboard on collecting items if you want to last longer, and bomb the flamengos on stage 2.

Tacos are good. I admit, with some degree of shame, that I have thought about Battle Garegga while eating tacos before. Though I'd say Psikyo games occupy my mind a lot more reliably while I'm eating tacos. I would normally recommend just enjoying the tacos, but some of us are on the autism spectrum, ya see. Those people should train hard and become a Superplayer™ like me.
