How's the quality of older Cave games in MAME? (No sh-3)
How's the quality of older Cave games in MAME? (No sh-3)
It's well known that sh-3 games have issues with slowdown, etc in MAME. I was wondering, to what degree are the older PGM titles and prior any better? Are they in the realm of at least port accuracy in terms of gameplay and timing? Espgaluda (1), ketsui, daioujou etc.

I've heard of some slowdown differences between the PCB and MAME for the PGM titles, but nothing glaring enough for me to notice myself. Progear has noticeable input lag (at least in non-Shmupmame) but it's still well within the realm of playability. I haven't heard of any inaccuracy with the games before that (the ones using the cave.c driver). They're all very playable, and people can and do play the games seriously in MAME.
They're also nowhere near as demanding on the CPU as MAME's CV1K/SH3 emulation, which has choppy performance on CPUs with relatively low clock speeds.

at least as good as the ports in every single case I believe...if the game even has a port in the first place

Galuda is missing delicious graphical glitches.
