Does the PS TV cut off a few pixel lines to make games fit?

Post by Lawfer »

Take for example Danganronpa which was originally a PSP game, meaning it's resolution was 480x272:

It was then ported to the PS Vita, so it's resolution was 480x272 multiplied by 2, resulting in the PS Vita resolution of 960x544 so the resolution was increased while the aspect ratio is preserved:

Now Danganronpa is once again being ported on another system, this time the PS4, however the PS4 resolution is set to support the 16:9 aspect ratio standard, if we go by the resolution of the publisher's sample pictures, it will indicate that the games will be missing a few pixel lines to fit 16:9 aspect ratio:

As you can see in the last sample picture, the resolution is 1440x810, while it should have been 1440x816 (480x272 x3), if you compare the first picture to the last one, you will notice that parts of the picture was cut off on the top and bottom.

So my question is, does the PS TV use a similar process to make PSP and PS Vita games fit on 16:9 screens? Because if you take a 480x272 game or a 960x544 game, the closest resolution to "1280x720" you could achieve would be 1280x725.

You can choose if you want to cut off the pixels or you can zoom slightly out to see the entire picture.

This

On the PSTV you can zoom in or out, with precise increments of pixel lines

Yeah I know it can do that, just like the PS4 and certain PS3 games that have such an option (Kingdom Heart HD 1.5, Metal Gear Peace Walker HD, Ar nosurge, Mugen Souls). But beside this and this is a technical question, does the PS TV output a 1280x720 picture as advertised as in the resolution options (480p, 720p and 1080i) or a 1280x725 picture?

It's always a 1280x720 picture (well, unless you use 1080i), because TVs wouldn't accept 1280x725.

It's outputting a 720p picture, but it's worth mentioning that it's not native 720p, it's just the Vita's 960x544 output scaled bilinearly by an internal scaler.

I guess a 2x vertical integer scale of the vita's native res is then possible when selecting 1080i output and displaying on a 1080p TV(albeit with à little bit of overscan)?

That makes sense, that explains how through the default settings when selecting "720p", it automatically goes into full screen mode as if any 720p PS3 game would, but then when I select "1080i" suddenly the picture is letterboxed in all sides unless I fiddle with the zoom menu, so it is safe to say that the "720p" setting the PS TV automatically takes it upon itself to cut corners on the top and bottom to make the picture fit a 16:9 aspect ratio (which 1280x720 is), otherwise there is no way unless there is underscan or overscan. I don't think that 1080i is very interesting either because it would add input lag but I have also noticed that in 1080i the colors are even more washed out than in 720p mode, which aren't all that great to begin with.

An interesting thing is that Final Fantasy Type 0 HD does not scale properly full screen on PS4 just like Metal Gear Peace Walker HD doesn't, you either have to deal with underscans or overscans, the similarities with both of them is that they are ports of PSP games.

No. It will still be bilinearly scaled.

Oh, your post reminded me. Yes, there is just a little bit of underscan. In the zoom menu I have the option of cutting off the top and bottom of the screen by a few pixels or leaving a bit of underscan on the left and right sides.

Most PS4 ports probably use entirely different assets, but I could be entirely wrong there.
