Is there a source for great explosion sound effects? Or is someone able to create nice sounding explosive sounds?
I'm especially interested in a good sound for dropping a bomb in a shmup.
All guys I ask for it, make very long and realistic explosion sounds haha, but I need it short and hitting.
Source for great explosion sound effects?

Well, are you looking for realistic explosion, or arcade style? I've always favored the one-two punch of Twin Cobra, with a pitched pew sound followed by a white noise impact.
I've heard that CAVE used to use animal sounds that they pitched down.

Well maybe that's the only way to make them fitting and original. Jurrasic park movie did the same.

yeah, if you really hear the explosions, there are 3 components, (boss explosions only)RHE wrote:LOLemphatic wrote:I've heard that CAVE used to use animal sounds that they pitched down.

- pitched down time warped/elongated growl, with probably a phaser/flanger and/or compressor thrown in (most probably lions or something similar)
- low frequency sine wave for the rumble, with distortion and low pass filter
- and the generic "pop" repeating while the others go on
also in DFK, at the end of boss explosions there is a squeaky wheel noise, which IMHO is hilarious and pulls the entire thing together.
for generic enemy "pop" explosion, they used probably something similar to sfxr, then layered on a bunch of them, added fx on top.

Man, use the AUDACITY program, is a free sound editor, with it, you can transform a simple "pop" effect on a mega-blaster-hyper-explosion sound effect
