military based shmups?

Post by infested_ysy »

Anyone here have a list of military themed shmups? I mean, games that allows you to control military planes (regardless of period, ie: WW2 planes, or modern jet planes), destroying enemies whose forces consisted of HUEG aircraft bombers, battleships, and the likes?

I could only think of the Strikers 1945 series, Raiden Fighters series, Aero Fighters and the 194x series. Any else that I've missed out?

some more include Silkworm, SWIV, Gyrodine, Kyukyoku Tiger II, Progear (this one seems pseudo military/fantasy)

Ah, i figured it out, since you mentioned Giga Wing series, i must include Sengeki Strikers too. While Giga Wing (either Mars Matrix) more of a Dodonpachi bullet hell stuff, Sengeki Striker offer a lot more Raiden/Toaplan like gameplay style

Ignoring le bump, by the loose standards of the OP it seems everything with planes would be military based. Whether it's the US Air Force or the Gradius Defense Force, any aircraft with the firepower to obliterate hundreds of enemies probably belongs to some military.

Some games offer the player non-aircraft (e.g. flying people, witches on broomsticks, flying creatures with optional riders) or private aircraft (e.g. a professional pilot on the run in Tyrian or homemade giant robots in Zeroigar), but the opposition could still be a sufficiently military organized armed force.

Trizeal always seemed military-ish to me. One of my favorites.

Strikers 1945 Part II, and the original 1942 are two other favorite tried-and-true military themed classics.

Well that ain't right.

Got Gunsmoke, and Armed Police Batrider, and Cosmo Police Galivan in the Law Enforcement shmup category.

There's the insect shmup category, Centipede etc.

The rogue-robot/motherbrain shmup category.

The fantasy/magic shmup category.

what else?

Recently, scientists have identified the Three Great Pillars Of Shump. Image

Military Shump. Image Emphasis on 20th century battlefield. Hishouzame, Task Force Harrier. Deflicted by STEAMPUNK. (Battle Garegga)

Space Shump. Image Emphasis on Buck Rogers. Tatsujin, Rayforce. Deflicted by GIGER. (X-Multiply)

Fantasy Shump. Image Emphasis on the uncanny. Phelios, Cotton. Deflicted by ANIME. (Gynoug)

You can identify all kinds of shumps with greater or lesser applications of the above!

Raiden = Military Space shump. (Flying Shark vs Asteroids)
Metal Black = Space Fantasy shump. (Flying Submarine vs Space Godfish)
ESPRade = Military Fantasy shump. (Flying Transvestite vs Tank Convoy)

What happens when you recommend your History Channel-loving bro Strikers 1945, and he calls you an asshole, because it gets weird at the end? Buddy should've known what was up with all the crazy transforming shit! But so should you. That there is a MILITARY SPACE FANTASY shump!

Now, DEFLICTION is always a concern. You might recommend Raiden III x Mikado to your Military Space Shump bro, and later that night he phones you up and calls you an asshole, because when he went online to order it, his mom thought it was one of them there crazy hentais and has taken away his shumps.

In these cases, they inevitably deserve it, so don't worry one way or another. Image But you should've known better! Knowing Your Shumps is why you signed up. Do better next time, that's the spirit. Image

Let's see, if I understand the reasoning framework correctly...

Hellsinker = Military Space Fantasy shump + Auteur affix. (Flying Squad vs High Concept)

However *raises hand* Professor, what's a defliction? I think my grandma had one of those...

Not at all! You skilfully identified the Rough Justice Shump subgenre, via Gun.Smoke and Batwider! In fact, the Military Shump can be alternatively called the Martial Shump. Man is born to carnage, and only force of arms can set his world right! Challenging the stars and reckoning the supernatural can wait until the despots and bandits and megacorps are brought to heel!

But sometimes... the beyond returns to mankind! (◎w◎;)
You better start believing in Pan-Hellenic Mysticism, soldier boy - YOU'RE LIVING IN ONE (`w´メ)

Good! That is a clear case of the GIBSON Defliction. Neuromantic Metempsychotic Karma Shooting Game!

Only this can explain the amount of "tentacle/serpentine" elements presents in a lot of their games, or the unquantifiable amount of fury in a couple of moments in GunForce 2.
Kazuma KUJO - "I was quite angry in my 20s; I was frustrated about my shortcomings as a developer. I think that's why I had nicknames like Oni or Kire. Oni is an ogre, or demon. Kire means anger, or it can mean snapping."

Now coincidentally, my granny was fond of the word too! Those late 19th / early 20th century pulps did get pretty hardcore! Privately, I suspect all returns to SPACEWAR and a stack of incredibly dodgy adventure magazines. Image

For me , military would be a less fantasy based and more grounded - with perhaps some steampunk styling - Strikers 1945, Raiden, Under Defeat and Sonic Wings would be 3 examples. Though even something like Raiden and Strikers starts getting OOT when they go into space. Some of the older Megadrive Toaplan games would fit the bill too. Gun Frontier is another.

Gun Frontier and Steel Empire sport outstandingly well-woven aesthetics. (the former a cheeky lift of Matsumoto's classic manga; forgivable for its sheer commitment to the bit, imo) Heavy metal tonnage on par with any army STG, fired by wild Dieselpunk and buoyed by space-age Future Past.

Garegga feels like a distillation of Senba's game into hyperreal mode. Keeps things planetside, unleashing wild creations like murdercarnivalier Mad Ball, arachnophobe frightener Junky Monkey, and the bestially vital Glow Squid; a machine whose terminal frenzy might dislocate the very jaws of death, 1CC snatched.

I'd put them on a sliding scale from Raiden Fighters (biblically massive machines that walk the "regenerating spider arms" and "thrashing decapitated cockpits" line), to Garegga (and its Cyberpunk counterpart Batwider)'s metal beast menagerie, to the fantastical Gun Frontier and Steel Empire, full of whimsical-yet-deadly martial Vernesques.

The term of "Dieselpunk" sounds it'd be right up the same alley as the sub-genre of "Steampunk," right BIL?

And Raizing/8ing's "Armed Police Batrider" arcade stg would be listed as within the sub-genre of "Cyberpunk" with it's stylized futuristic vibe/setting indeed.

Indeed PCEFX! A grungy dark echo, or maybe just the inevitable result of man's lust for more horsepower! Image

Most definitely! I'd also suggest Gallop, another futuristic Rough Justicer. And authentic ex-IREM Last Resort, which wears its dystopic Akira influences proudly. Gunnail's not quite as unified as all these, but it's got enough glimpses of bleak technopolis to qualify, imo. Particularly fond of the second High Speed stage's background, an affectingly hard-packed cityscape, that really pops opposite the penultimate night metropolis.
