Any Bosses in Galaga '88??....
I never played this game in the arcades, and have played it on the trial version of Magic Engine for just a few minutes-are there any bosses in this game??

IIRC, there are bosses at the ends of the vertically scrolling stages you perodically encounter, but then it's been a while since I've played.
(This is really more a game feature question than a strategy question, so I'm moving this to Shmups Chat.)

Oh I agree, I just love boss fights!Super Laydock wrote:To answer the question: there's indeed the occasional "Boss" in the vertically scrolling levels. Nothing special in the boss-department imo, but:
Who cares!?
It's an utterly fantastic game in any case!

@Brian-the PC Engine port of this game is probably close to arcade perfect; I'd just get that, unless you are only into PCBs.

The PC Engine/TG-16 port was also released in the US as Galaga '90. No changes were made besides the name. An excellent port of the arcade game.dave4shmups wrote:Oh I agree, I just love boss fights!Super Laydock wrote:To answer the question: there's indeed the occasional "Boss" in the vertically scrolling levels. AFIK, Galaga '88 was never released on the NES or Famicom. But as far as your unreliable NES goes, next month the NEX-a top loading console with two cartridge ports on top-one for NES games and one for Famicom games-will go on sale. It will retail for about $59.99, and feature wire-less controllers, and a port for NES controllers, lightguns, etc. Well worth the price, I'd say!professor ganson wrote:I have to play this game-- I've heard nothing but good things about it and of course I love Galaga. I just don't like playing games on my unreliable NES. I'll have to think about getting it for PCE.

Yes, Galaga 90. I was just about to mention this...but you beat me to it.
The Boss battles in Galaga'88 are not that good, but I have never been to the last bosses.
But this game is not about the boss fights, it's those nice feeling and upgrading your ship and playing for score against some mean enemy formations. Also all this little secrets are very entertaining let two of those moths alife, that they transform into a giant moth to get more points and every enemy have his own score secret.
And ofcourse Galactic Dancing rules.

I love old school Galaga with it's lightning reflex play, the tradition was well kept in the sequel Galaga 88, including the bonus stages (Galactic Dancing anyone?). I still jam the fire button like mad, it's one of those games that wear me out after playing it a bit, although I've never made it to the end. I've found the original game at Wal- Mart here, along with Ms. Pac Man, and the best thing.... it's set to free play, so anytime I go, I've got to test my Galaga skills (last time I went there with a friend at 2 a.m. and got to stage 10, he was ready to leave, so I had to leave the game behind with 3 lives still left, and myself in a groove).
But in all honesty Galaga 88 still has the same intensity as it's original brethern, just much more to shoot at, and much prettier.

Thanks for the info-- the NEX sounds great! I will definitely look into that.dave4shmups wrote:AFIK, Galaga '88 was never released on the NES or Famicom. I don't know where I got the idea that Galaga 88 was an NES title. So was Galaga 90 for PCE the only console port?

Here's the website of Messiah Entertainment (at least they don't have a god complex), where you can pre-order, and get more info about, the NEX:professor ganson wrote:Thanks for the info-- the NEX sounds great! I wouldn't be surprised if there is a port of Galaga'88 for the X68000, but that machine has so few exclusives that it's really not worth owning, IMO.

I recently bought the PCB and have had it in my cab for about 6 weeks or so. I play it about 3 or 4 times a day.
There is only one boss battle that I know of and its a lame affair.
You can triple up your fire power by getting caught and shooting the collecting alien down
You have Galaga, Galaxian and scrolling levels.
The music is very cool, the PCB has treble and bass
It gets very hard in the last two zones, you can only shoot certain aliens at certain times and there is alot of Kamikaze aliens that dive at you at top speed. The challenge stages just get silly but are highly enjoyable and the tunes change from each one.
Its a 9/10 game for those that like a quick blast, repetitive play after 2 or 3 credits is just boring though.. Its one of those games you must have a go of but due to its linearity and simplistic design you will probably bore of it after 2 plays.
There are capsuls in the game which affect the direction of your game. Collecting 2 or more in one zone warps you to a harder rank, or it seems like it. You do get a higher score collecting the capsuls, but you also get a harder game. I've had 6 lives once and lost them on 2 levels alone collecting 2 capsuls per zone. Yet on another game i've gotten much further by not collecting them but my score was crap.
You get a bonus 10,000 points if you do not shoot anything on the first challenge stage, so if your down to single fire (unlikely), your probably better not shooting anything because if you miss just one alien you will get 3900 instead of the perfect 10,000.

This industry has become 2 dimensional as it transcended into a 3D world.

i second this motion. i'd have to replay the game to figure out what my high score actually is, but...i don't mind.professor ganson wrote:Why don't you start one? (shameless plug) thats what scores.victoly.com is for. set it and forget it!™ not everyone is on there of course but theres a good chunk of people. galaga is already there, someone might as well add galaga '88 if they want it.professor ganson wrote:Why don't you start one? The HuCard version is a tad easier than the arcade game and you can't do the Dimension Warp as many times. Even if the PCB trumps it, it is one of my favorite PCE titles though- and a millionfold better than Hasbro's pathetic 3D Galaga release.zaphod wrote:THe PCE version of galaga 88 is one of those conversions that seems perfect until you go back and play the original again. It's still a mighty fine game, though.
Namco needs to put Galaga '88 into their Museum series instead of just recycling previously ported titles. They should've added it to the Ms. Pac-Man/Galaga cabinet as another extra game.
Kinect? KIN NOT.
well, i did it. pc engine version. and i started it off with the mediocre score i got earlier today.japtor wrote:thats what scores.victoly.com is for. set it and forget it!™ not everyone is on there of course but theres a good chunk of people. galaga is already there, someone might as well add galaga '88 if they want it.
