Grappling hook games (Bionic Commando, etc.)

Post by Damocles »

I really like the concept, and am looking for more options. So far I've found:

Aquales
Bionic Commando (durrr)
Batman (Gameboy)
Batman Returns (Master System, Game Gear)
Mega Turrican
Phantom 2040 (Genny, SNES)
Tekkaman Blade (Gameboy)
Uhihare Kiwase (SP?)(SNES)

Any good ones I'm missing?

Well, there will be Grapple Buggy (XBLA or XBLIG), if Nate can get it released.

Chain Dive
Roc n Rope (this was by the guy who did BC, before BC)
Bunch of Spider-Man games, ofc - vs Kingpin on Genny, Deadly Foes on SNES
Earthworm Jim
Ninja Five-O is amazing, make damn sure you play that if you haven't.
The GG Shinobi has a ninja with a grappling hook
Bunch of Metroid games - Super and the Primes
IGMO - Poorly emulated, never beaten.

That's Umihara Kawase, for Super Famicom, with the sequel Umihara Kawase Shun (and later updated rerelease Second Edition) for PlayStation. Shun Second Edition got a horrible PSP port in Umihara Kawase Portable, and both games got a fantastic DS port in the collection with the not at all clunky title Umihara Kawase Shun Second Edition Kanzenban, even including some extra fields for Shun.

(yes, I love Umihara Kawase to death, can you tell?)

Super Secret Ninja is a very small freeware game all about ninja roping through stages without being spotted, and Wire Hand Redux is another little freeware where your only goal is to climb as high up as possible using only a grappling hook.

Mega Man Zero 2 had a weapon that you could also use as a grappling hook in most places.

I hear Just Cause and sequel have a fair share of grappling hook, as well.
My 1CCs so I can find the list easier myself

Yeah and it was a right bastard to use because if you didn't hit with the tip, you fell.

Should also add Akumajo Dracula (SFC)/Super Castlevania IV (SNES)

Super Turrican 2 has the same grappling concept as Mega Turrican.

I love grapple hooks!

Lost Planet is another one.

I just picked up Umihara Kawase Shun (Second Edition).
Damn Tim, you know there are quite a few Americans out there who still lives in tents due to this shitty economy, and you're dropping loads on a single game which only last 20 min. Do you think it's fair? How much did you spend this time?

Bloodlines / Vampire Killer would also be worth a mention in that case, since the whip character can grapple onto and swing from nearly any overhead surface. Besides mobility this doubles as an attack, with the player damaging enemies on contact. It's fun to kill and/or evade stuff by swinging right through it.

edit: also, not a "grappling hook" per se, but Dynamite Headdy has a pretty nice hook and swing mechanic.

Tenchu. The series hasn't aged well in terms of its controls, but can still be fun. Wrath of Heaven was probably the high point of the series.

Mark of the Ninja. I bought this recent release on XBLA today. It looks great and has some interesting stealth mechanics. Its grappling is limited to specific grapple points, but there's plenty of them.

Pandora's Tower
I-Ninja
Rayman 3: Hoodlum Havoc
Prince of Persia: The Two Thrones
Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles: The Crystal Bearers (in a way, and maybe Dawn of Mana too, but PS2 just doesn't have enough RAM to do much with Havoc; Onimusha 3 has got the whip thing as well, but I don't know if there's any grappling hook style exploration to it; last but not least, one of the brush techniques in Ōkami is of this kind)
Probably one of the Jak & Daxter games.
Possibly WarioWare, Inc.
Maybe Haven: Call of the King (I doubt it's good to be honest).
Doesn't Sonic Heroes have some mechanics of this kind?
There's a device in The Legend of Zelda: Oracle of Ages that allows you to swap places with some creatures and objects.

What about that PC-Engine game with the spring-like guy? Forget what it's called...

Also he doesn't have a grappling hook, but Comix Zone often has that kind of a feel. Lots of hand-over-hand maneuvering about on pipes, jumping long distances, etc.

Hagane crossed my mind too, but its harpoon weapon is strictly a fire into ceiling -> pull character up deal, rather like Mega Man 4's Wire addon.

I actually own The Adventures of Star Saver, but didn't even think of it this time. Is this game weird.
Speaking of mechs, I wouldn't be surprised if Metal Warriors had something like that. Or The NewZealand Story for that matter.
As far as quality is concerned, best grappling hooks in 2D are in ChainDive and Ninja Five-O.

Apparently there's a mod that allow you to grapple VERY far in Just Cause 2. And I think Mercenaries 2 have it too, but only limited for hijacking a helicopter.

I think the movie tie-in Batman games from Ocean had a mechanic like that. They were a bit crappy, though. (Hugely successful nonetheless.)

Oh yeah, the original Atari 2600 Spider Man has pretty impressive web mechanics for such a fossil:

Worms Armageddon.

Lots of people play with infinite ninja ropes, and say you can only attack from a rope. It makes the game very interesting.

And lots of Batman games also have strong grappling hook mechanics, like the aforementioned Batman from Ocean, and Batman Returns on Mega-Drive. The first Batman for Mega-Drive, by Sunsoft, also had a grappling hook, but I don't remember if you could swing from it. This always made me think that developers who made Batman games actually wanted to work in Spider-Man games.

Arumana no Kiseki (The Miracle of Almana) for the Famicom Disk System. Early Konami title with music from the duder who did Castlevania. Very unforgiving game, but it's quite unique and has a killer soundtrack. I got my copy for about 20 bucks, so it's not too difficult to get a hold of.
