From what I've played, here's the game systems:
-your ship have two options, with three different formations (front, side, rear), the option shoots are fired diagonally. They can be used as shield as well.
-Enemies come from every direction; it seems the enemy formations are random each playthrough.
-No powerups, no credits, no lives. You die, you game over. (only single stage it seems, survive enemy waves/destroy everything until the boss bar fills up)
-More than one loop (?)
-"Beginner mode", adds a shield function (auto-shield? I still don't understand how it works)
-A secret inside, which I still unable to decipher yet (but it's written in the readme....I suck at Japanese)

That's it! I'm "sold"! Sign me up, I'm totally committed. This is undoubtedly going to be the game of the year! Forget you, "Skyrim"! Who needs all that "fluff" and "accessories". We want RAW GAME!

There's so much about ths game I don't understand!
Is this a remake of some original Star Shooter Maximum?
What do the Ctrl+P and Ctrl+H menu options do?
Why is it so hard?

Yes. The original was in 98 or so.

Ctrl+P is for pausing (it seems? Although you can pause by pressing P)
Ctrl+F will disable the starfield background
Still can't figure what the Ctrl+H will do though.

Well there's talk in the readme of a score reset option and an extra hard mode so wonder if they're anything to do with that.
I didn't like this at first- it looks really 90s but it soon gets addictive.
Couldn't find any info about the original Star Shooter Maximum anywhere either.

Oh boy, ain't that fun. I think I even beat the world record for creds/minute :o

From what I got Ctrl+H shows your hitbox as a multicoloured glowing thing in the middle of your ship. The text for the option is quite confusing though, something like "Display collision detection", which I expected to be somewhat different than "Just show my hitbox dammit"

Cool- Ctrl+P would initialise all savedata, and first menu option from the extreme right-hand menu would display stats except my game can't find the path to the save.ini file.

The save.ini should be in save_file folder.

Also, if you take a look at the readme file, there's an instruction to unlock a 'secret'. Still hasn't properly tried it since I don't understand Japanese :V

From the bottom of the helpfile? Let's give this a shot:

(1) Right after opening the game, while the ARECT logo is onscreen, type in G, I, R, L, [enter] on the keyboard. You'll hear a sound if done correctly.

(2) Within 5 seconds of starting a game, move to the right corner and press the shot button.

(3) Switch to the SIDE WING formation, and when the white popcorn enemies pile up onscreen press the shot button.

(4) 59 seconds after starting a game, press joystick button 4 (pause)

(5) After successfully performing (2), when the confirmation message is displayed press the 'N' key

(6) After successfully performing (2), when the confirmation message is displayed press the 'U' key

(7) An item will appear from the center of the large explosion when 9999999 in 1 is reached ( :?: :?: :?: )

(8) At the title screen, if you press the 'E' 'N' 'D' keys at the same time...

Wow this game has hidden depths!
Has anyone got the displaying info/ data initialising menu options to work?
I just get a "cannot find the path specified" error. My maximum_save.ini path is currently C:\MaximumV236\save_file\.
And what's this stuff about colors?
Can't stop playing!

EDIT: Got a 200,000 pt bonus item from pausing at 59 secs :D

That's the dumbest thing I've ever heard.

The game appears at first to be a no-nonsense straight up hardcore shooter, and then this.

Hm, are we playing the same version? Here the option for Ctrl+P reads something like "A moment pause". And the first option under the right hand menu is literally "user's manual".

As for that, I've opened the game in a debugger and just before calling whatever he uses to open notepad he pushes an address into the stack(ORLY?). The weird thing is that the address contains a string like "C:\Documents and Settings\name of the author", in short, seems like he forgot to get the program ready for shipping before release.
But then, maybe I'm really using an outdated version and we're not having exactly the same problem.

Well, boss milking is at least something that can become apparent to the player during the normal course of play.

It's vaguely reminiscent of Strider 2 (which I was just playing today), with all the hidden bonus items. In that game, it's pretty much impossible to score well unless you know where the invisible hidden items are. My issue with it is that it's not in any way skill-related.

You're absolutely right!
Muy bad- I read something in the readme about Data Reset and Credit Display, put two and two together and got five! Sorry for jumping to misleading conclusions. I guess the data reset option wasn't actually implemented.
So all the menus are figured out now but what about these secrets? I've got 1, 2 , 4, 5, 6 and 8 although not really sure of their effects: 1 displays a picture of a girl on the title screen, 8 displays player data, 2 displays a slogan, 4 gives 200000pt bonus item, 5 and 6 display slogan and change BGM.
Can't get secret 3- which white popcorn enemies is it referring to, I don't see any which pile up.

It's okay, no worries. As for savedata, you can just delete the maximum_save.ini file and the game will generate a new one on the next startup. Or you can just edit out the fields you want to reset.
I've got the same secrets as you so far(except 4, getting one minute is though, hah). I've read the text for (3) and right after he mentions the white popcorn enemies(I've seen two varieties of small white ones so far) he mentions, in parentheses, へダム, I can't make sense out of it and I can't see it in nZero's translation either.
ダム is probably a (bullet)barrage, how that へ affects the meaning of the sentence is what bugs me though.
But the same word that nZero interpreted as to pile up can also mean to overlap, so I'll take a guess that this is what it means(google translate agrees with me :) ), which would make the sentence roughly "Press the shot button when the white small enemies(dam towards?!) are a bit overlapped".
Still, even my interpretation seems to have no results, as I see no overlapping things at all.

Oh, and I don't need to do (2) right to be able to execute (5) and (6) at all, weird.

Hm, I sort of agree that it turns competitive play largely into a whoever has read more spoilers wins thing. But still, it's so funny to unveil a game's mysteries like we're trying to right now, even more when all documentation is written in them moonrunes.

Whoa, thanks for the translation. Things are way clearer now. :D

One strange thing though, sometimes, there's a 3 seconds countdown near my ship, I don't know what I means (and what I've done), but it doesn't make any changes it seems. Moreover, I still can't figure how the auto-shield (the barrier that suddenly expands/shrinks from your ship) works yet either, more or less it happens quite randomly for me (although IIRC the manual said that its automatically activates if there's a bullet near the player ship).

I think every secret is completely separate, you don't need to do them in order to perform the next secret.

Also, pressing enter will change BGM as well as the background color.

You get the shield by selecting Ctrl+B option in menu, hi scores aren't saved and the 59 second pause bonus doesn't work.
The 3-2-1 countdown next to the ship is the time for the shield to recharge and it's activated by bullet grazing.
Cool tip about pressing Enter.
Wonder how much more there is.
