Butterfly madess v1.0 beta

Post by Suslik »

Hi everybody. I'm here to announce the beta release of Butterfly madess.

The game is complete. Beta means that things can still change and bugs may be fixed. This may result in not working replays of the game. Be sure to read the instructions. Sorry, it doesn't have awesome bullethell music :S

important: For many people (including me for some certain firefox/java configurations) the java applet wont load. A simple "fix" for this is to download the offline version.

I am looking for bug reports and suggestions. If you encounter a bug then please describe exactly what happened and where. Also the contents of the error should be included.

Some screenshots of the game:

If you're going to go with the (obvious) toehoe presentation, could you please please please but more effort than Zunstin Powers into the bullets, and animate them (the actual bullet graphic) slightly? Such a small thing does wonders to the enthusiasm in play, presenting much more threat than just a... static sphere/petal shape, and would also be a step toward your own game, then an obvious (for lack of a better term, and no insult intended) knock-off.

One thing i don't like about bullethell games are animated bullets lol. Especially those that wiggle a little due to the animation frame so the player won't know how close he can go without getting hit. We just have different preferences. I animated some bullets just to see how it would look and i didn't like it... For me it just creates unnecessary confusion :S

Hey, I tried running your game, both in online and offline mode, but it had some problems. First off, just a UI choice, I REALLY REALLY hate buttons where you don't know what they do until you roll over them. (I had to hunt a bit to find out how to start the game.)

Second, when I did start the game, it didn't seem to want to actually start, which made me very sad. I wanted to shoot butterflies! It just showed me a picture of the bunny at the bottom of an empty screen, and froze up.

One more vote for static bullets though. I find that, especially in situations where there are TONS of bullets, and they are moving slowly enough to stay on the screen for a long period, having them animate is super annoying. I do think they could use more color variation to make it easier to pick out subpatterns though. (I think part of the reason ZUN gets away with bullets that are [mostly] static, is that he varies the color so much.)

Totally makes sense. Ill change this.

I should (and will for next version) mention that the game starts paused :P

Thanks for the color varying suggestion. I guess some patterns really could use more color variation. I might add some color variation to the parts where it would make sense to do so. What parts of the game did you have in mind though? I might miss the ones where you would like to see some changes.

Try updating Java - Java on OSX is maintained by Apple and has minor differences to the standard version. If you can't update because they've gone Intel-based you're screwed.

This could help a bit: http://www.javatester.org/version.html

Also you need Mac OS X 10.4 or higher. This criteria is already fulfilled though o-O

Just a thought:
...on an older apple g4...
Does that mean your computer is fairly old and slow? If it does then yes, this could be a serious problem. I don't know why, but if your computer is too slow to load the applet in ~30 seconds, then it will never start on some systems. I don't know what causes this issue currently, but i am trying to contact the right people to solve it.

O____O How on earth can downloading the offline version crash your browser? It's just a .rar file... I assumed that the offline version does not load. Don't go to that site, just click the offline version download link and see if you can download it and then start it.

Suslik, it may be a good idea to upload it optionally as a ZIP rather than a RAR. I've had problems with downloading stuff before due to the way Mac OS handles archive files.

Oh wow, thanks. I actually thought about this, but didn't think it would be a problem :)

I'm here to announce that beta for Butterfly madess is over. Hopefully all serious bugs are gone

I added:
*a world record board where people can download the replays of the best score owners in the whole wide world. You can also submit your own replay if you have beaten the best score.
*game manual so the people can have a more in depth understanding of the game
