Are iPhone games real shmups?
Are iPhone games real shmups?
I've been playing a lot of ESPGaluda 2 on my iPhone recently, and having a lot of fun with it.
No matter how much fun it is, I still don't know whether I consider it a real shmup or not. What are your opinions?

Shooting, scoring, dodging.
Arguably, 2D plane for the gameplay.
If you've got all those, it might be a shmup.

Now, if you're playing a shmup.. on a telephone, you will never, in a trillion years, experience the shmup. You'll think you have experienced it--but you'll be... ahem, cheated. It's a.. such a sadness, that you think you've played the shmup on your fucking telephone. Get real.

Hell no! They're like some snooty chef who think your cooking sucks and is always ordering you around your own kitchen, only the chef is transformed into text so the gullible let down their guard and invite it into their home.AraraSPAMWitch wrote:Are cookbooks Real Books?!

The sad thing is that there are plenty of people here who would play a shmup on the PSP or DS without any issues, but as soon as something far superior comes along for iPhone they'll cmplain about it and get all pissy before even trying it.
For me personally, the iPhone screen is too small for shmups, but the iPad is a whole other story - now only if it was possible to plug in a controller using the USB camera adaptor we'd all have iPads by now! <reflect flame barrier up!>

Do these things use touch or motion controls? I can't imagine them being any good but I don't really know.
Re: Are iPhone games real shmups?
RPGs don't cost me $850 and will eventually have either party running to a strategy guide when they get stuck. Strategy guide reference is probably even more common for shmup players over RPG players.Matsunaga wrote:This coming from someone who uses strategy guides to beat RPG's......
I don't usually use guides (I can't even think of the last 10 games which I had to), but if your idea of fun is running through a jRPG multiple times to get 100% instead of just using a guide to begin with, more power to you.

Okay, I'll try to put down the flames with a question: can games be output to TV via the universal dock? If so, can I use an iPod Touch 3g with such a cable to just use the device as a controller whilst playing on a larger screen?
Or Apple screwed us with that aswell?

Re: Are iPhone games real shmups?
It's mentioned in fellow shmupper Spadgy's recent writeup about the interview with Cave that they simply used code from the arcade PCB version of ESPgaluda II for the iPhone version of the same name -- was an experiment to see if it was feasible (it's doable). So Cave has no trouble porting it's current arcade PCB catalog to the iPhone/iPad platform as they see fit. Sure'd be nice if a proper D-pad or joystick controller hack to such an iPhone or iPad was feasible -- might take some tinkering around to pull off successfully though.

Re: Are iPhone games real shmups?
There are a few motion control games, but the only shmups I've played all used touch controls.Octopod wrote:Do these things use touch or motion controls? I can't imagine them being any good but I don't really know.
Movement is actually not bad, I don't think. Your ship follows the movements of your finger. So you control speed as well as direction, making dodging more manageable. Tip: Always use Relative Controls. Icarus-X allows for Direct Control where the ship is always under your finger, and it doesn't work well.
Shooting is a little harder. Most shmups either have your shots always on, or on when touching the screen. Tapping twice or touching with two fingers can be used to activate bombs or other weapons.
I'd prefer an actual controller, but I can live with touch controls even on the small screen of my iPod Touch. I'd imagine the iPad is much more convenient.

Huh. Well I guess it would be cool if they would release these for Android phones and had keyboard support so you could play them with the game gripper. I imagine they will eventually make their way over.
