DDP or DOJ?

Post by kernow »

I have both, but my DOJ is dead. I'm thinking of selling one if it comes back fixed. I've realised theres not much point owning both in the series (although at one point I did own donpachi also). Which would you keep? and why?

I prefer the hand drawn sprite pixel art of DDP compared to DOJ's murky pre rendered-ness, but I prefer DOJ's system, the bees being beexchain and not incremental score like in DDP, and hypers are cool bro 8)

However, I feel DOJ is too hard for me and I could play it for the rest of my life and not get past level 4 or something (I can only get to the level 3 boss on a good day anyway and then its all over), I understand it takes practice and skill of course. DDP is a far mellower difficulty curve and I can get to the end of 1-5 if I'm doing ok.

Soo, do you feel it is necessary to own both because of their differences, and lets face it they are both great games, or which one would you pick and keep out of the two?

Knowing me I'd probably keep both anyway, but hey its something to talk about :)

Don't be a pussy. Keep DOJ... DDP's cock-rock soundtrack is almost grounds alone to selling it.

They're both fantastic games, but for me there are two main reasons to want to have DOJ:
1: it's better than DDP. looks better, plays better, better bosses and stages, and has hypers
2: DOJ is hard as balls. this is a positive thing, because this means that it has added longevity. DDP is a game that you play for a while, steadily getting better, before beating it, and moving on to harder games. DOJ is a game that you can work at for years and years and still not 1cc it because it's that hard. it'll take you much longer to master DOJ compared to DDP, so this hypothetically means you'll get more replay out of it.

It depends on how long you intend to stay with the game. If you're in it for the long haul DOJ will be much more rewarding. That being said, it's not like DDP is a walk in the park if going for score.

I prefer DDP, DOJ is too hard for me too. That said, keep both. They're different enough not to be direct competition to each other.

If money is really tight, it makes sense to keep DDP, and invest in MGCD or similar hack to play PS2 on your cab, then buy the Arika DOJ port which is pixel perfect, plus has ability to record and practice individual levels so you can make progress.

I got the DDP 1CC amazingly quickly, about 15 plays - surprised me how short lived it was, but I really love it. It's damn exciting.
Playing for score is an entirely different matter though (very hard.)

Overall I'd say DOJ though - it's the mother of all shmups.

And without DDP-DOJ, there wouldn't be a DDP-DFK either. ^_~

I used to prefer DOJ over DDP but honestly, it began to feel too precisely memorize-y. I realize it's a shmup and there's always a great deal of memorization, but DOJ just gets to the point where you need to be able to do it perfectly with your eyes closed to actually score well, as opposed to DDP which is a little less precise and punishing, score-wise (and a lot less EXPONENTIAL). It's still my second favorite, regardless.

(Also, the different-sized hitboxes for the different ship types in DOJ just boggles my mind.)

I'm gonna have to disagree there. The hyper system makes DOJ more flexible, there's no (or insignificant) MAX bomb bonus requiring you to nm/nb, and it's really only stage 4 that requires the sort of anal memorisation that most of DDP requires. Scoring in DOJ isn't exponential, if you fuck up one stage you can still go on to get a decent score unless that stage happens to be stage 5, but most people aren't too concerned with chaining stage 5 anyway tbh. DDP is just easier than DOJ.
Having played both extensively, I prefer DOJ. The bees are actually worth something!

To me, the hyper system makes the game feel even more precise. I think it's one of those things that seems designed to give flexibility, but you end up needing to refine your hypering as much as the rest of the game, so it feels to me like trying to "harden" a "flexible" mechanic (lol that sounded dumb but it was the best way I could put it). For instance when I was learning how to chain stage 2, I was running into a problem where my hyper was running out during the section with the 2 big tanks (to be more precise, exactly when the small enemies come in from the right side) and it was breaking my chain about half the time due to the laser having to come back out. So I ended up having to time my initial hyper at the beginning of the level just slightly different, and I was able to chain stage 2. There's also tons of precision required to fill the hyper bars exactly when you need to. If this thread had been made a few months ago you'd probably find me agreeing with you but recently it's just kind of driven me nuts, man.

But that MAX bomb actually allows you to improvise a bit for survival and still get a "decent" score without chaining some levels. Besides, chaining also requires you to nm/nb anyway so that's pretty irrelevant.
Scoring in DOJ isn't exponential, if you fuck up one stage you can still go on to get a decent score unless that stage happens to be stage 5, but most people aren't too concerned with chaining stage 5 anyway tbh.
If you break your chain once in, say, level 2, your score gets a giant cleave to the face for 50 million points (which is over half of your score by the end of that stage). Stage 5 has literally about half the points of the entire loop which is just ridiculous.
The bees are actually worth something!
Definitely agreeing on this one though...

OH GOD NO

If you can't get past stage 3 of DOJ don't bother buying it again. If you can't get 100m before stage 4, don't bother buying it again. It just becomes more anal about scoring and survival as it goes on. DDP is far less strict in this regard, so it's more accessible. I think this is what they were also trying to do with DFK; make a hardcore, difficult game that's still balanced and easy to grasp.
