How to make sprites: KOF XII edition

Post by GaijinPunch »

Since there are plenty of people here that feel they should beat the shit out of the sprite-based representation of a friend, I figured this link would be interesting.

Regardless of what might be said about the changes in gameplay, the art is quite a feat. Traced from a 3D mockup; no wonder it's so smooth and consistent.

And the France stage is hilarious.

Some great looking stuff. SFIV when one route, KOFXII when another. Both produced good looking games but it's hard not to favor the 2D art style.

Pretty nifty. I like how Joe looks like some kind of anorexic psycho in this version. Actually, all the characters look meaner.

I've tried my hand at pixel art in the past, and have done some fairly decent attempts. The detail and shading stage are what always kill me, despite my roughs looking fairly good. I guess it's the same thing with painting - the actual shapes of your forms aren't as important as the subtle differences between light and shadow that give the image depth and solidity.

The individual frames are impressive but I just can't watch people play it for more than a few rounds in Casino. It might be the top of the line kit the arcade is known for using, but I think the lack of animation effects on the frames themselves make it look weird in motion. Putting giant particle systems over everything seems to be their solution, but I'd rather some blur/motion/caricature on the frame.
