Soukyugurentai has a great look and feel to it; unfortunately rank punishes you for shooting. Still one of the best Saturn shooters (arcade perfect port). Avoid the PS1 conversion at all costs. Want to know more? Use the forum search. All question reagrding the game have been answerd before, and more than once.
If "all the questions regarding this game have been answered before, and more than once" then why not stick that in FAQ, ban all discussion on this game, and have BulletMagnet come here and lock this thread too?

I seem to remember the only notable differences between the two being that some text wouldn't display correctly in the first when some region-unlocker devices were used to play it, and the latter has the Garegga demo. As for the PS1 version, it doesn't look as good and has more slowdown, though it also has an extra (and overpowered) selectable ship and an additional mode, though I'm not sure exactly what's different about it. It also tends to be cheap to buy.professor ganson wrote:Note that there's a difference between Souky and Souky Otokuyo (both available on Saturn). Some people swear by the latter version, and in my experience it is preferable. Costs a few dollars more, but iirc there is less slowdown.
So I'm officially the forum boogeyman now?If "all the questions regarding this game have been answered before, and more than once" then why not stick that in FAQ, ban all discussion on this game, and have BulletMagnet come here and lock this thread too?

Sorry, I don't feel like using the forum search right now, but I do want to know why the PS1 iteration is to be avoided? That's the one I play and considering it has normal arcade mode in addition to the PS1 exclusive special mode, I feel it's fine.Ceph wrote:Avoid the PS1 conversion at all costs. Want to know more? Same reason(s) people should buy DP for the PS1.
RABBLE RABBLE RABBLE!!!!!!
So what's that special mode like?Limbrooke wrote:Sorry, I don't feel like using the forum search right now, but I do want to know why the PS1 iteration is to be avoided? If you've ever played PS1 by default, then that's special mode. You have the choice to select a 4th 'yellow' ship, which is pretty good. There's a narrator too, and more story and cutscene business. Overall the difficulty is toned down from default arcade. However, I don't know if many (if anyone who has bothered enough) people know that you can change the mode to plain old arcade mode, just like it's found on Saturn. I haven't played the Saturn game, but unless it's mind blowing, I don't see how the PS1 game is in any way terrible.icycalm wrote:So what's that special mode like?
The sound might be missing some of the 'omph' from Saturn, and the graphics might not be as clean, but the comparison of PS1 arcade mode and Saturn being similar to DP SS and DP PS1 isn't really fair, but then again I'm speaking as one who has never played it on Saturn, maybe I really should.jp wrote:Same reason(s) people should buy DP for the PS1.

I never said the PS1 version was terrible...like I said I have both. I bought the PS1 version to see the extra ship. I just prefer the Saturn version to PS1 and stated the reasons why, but either way you can get it, its worth purchasing.Limbrooke wrote:If you've ever played PS1 by default, then that's special mode. You may be quite surprised at just how much better it is.Limbrooke wrote:I haven't played the Saturn game, but unless it's mind blowing, I don't see how the PS1 game is in any way terrible..
The main thing is there is far less slowdown on the Saturn version - this isn't just a graphical thing, it really affects the gameplay.
Then there are the graphical differences - the Saturn version uses the fancy scaling hardware to do high bit-depth, nicely detailed backgrounds. Whereas the PS1 version is by comparison, and putting it politely, a little ugly to look at.
So the Saturn version simply looks and plays a lot better.
The extra ship on the PS1 version is really the only reason I own that version as well.
