What Supergun?

Post by Tigershark »

I've been toying with buying a new console for shmups (i.e. a Jap PS2) but after doing some research I've come to the conclusion that I'd be better off buying a supergun (I won't bore you with the reasons why).

I'm not sure if this is important but in case it is: I much prefer to play the newer shmups from say 1995 onwards.

I have a few questions:

(a) What's the best value/performace supergun out there? I don't want cheap but I don't want to break the bank either. Compatibility for most PCBs is a must.

(b) Can I play this through an old Sony 50hz tv and/or my computer lcd screen? I ask because a search reveals lots of issues concerning the speed of the screen you use to play games on.

(c) Are there any other questions I should have asked but didn't?

Thanks.

TS.

Generally, the more you pay the better the supergun. You can get simple, home-made ones for $100 or so, or a professional Sigma for $300.

You'll need a 60Hz RGB compatible TV.

In order to play on an LCD screen you'll need some kind of upscaling device, such as an XRGB. Expensive stuff, and I can hardly recommend playing low res 2D games on an LCD anyway, unless you absolutely love really pixelated graphics.

Thanks. My old Sony has a scart connection but is only 50hz. Bugger.

How old is your Sony? If it's younger than 1990 then it's very likely that it supports 60Hz on its RGB scart.

I used to play my PS1 through the scart and that was fine. I thne played my DC through svideo and some 60hz games were ok but some were too flickery.

Not tried 60hz through the scart. I think the tv is mid 90's.

If it's mid 90s then I'm 98% sure that it works with 60Hz on RGB scart. Do you happen to have an NTSC PS1? If yes, then voila!
