Shooters with unfair bosses
I nominate Veritex (Mega Drive) as number 1 contender.
Here is why: After getting killed about 20 times by the final boss (a gigantic brain which shoots huge beams from randomly popping up eyes at you that instantly kill you and are impossible to avoid), I eventually stopped trying and instead went looking for a cheat code. I found a nice one which gives you a shield (Press start to pause the game, hold a+b+c and then press right. Press start to unpause the game) I then discovered that if you input the code the moment you get killed, it revives you. Upon reaching the final boss with the yellow weapon and missiles equipped, I positioned my ship in the top right corner and kept shooting. I was killed about 30-40 times while constantly reviving myself, then the bastard boss from hell finally gave out. I have a feeling this part of the game was never play-tested; the final boss is simply impossible to beat by normal means. All you get after destroying the final boss is a stupid scrolling Japanese text message, in case you were wondering.
Any other nominations?

The one that looks like a giant square crab?
(Stage 9 is called "Wall" by the way, so I'm assuming you mean this one.)

While not a boss, in Sexy Parodius (may have been Goku), level 5 has a physical wall right in the middle of the level. You ***have*** to have a green bell to get past it or you die.

SiKrAiKeN: While I don't think everyone here -is- a Ninja Turtle, I DO believe everyone here has the potential to be a Ninja Turtle. No doubt.

Yup, 'tis Sexy Paro, the Sky Chase stage, stage6 I believe (count includes the boss rush). A blue bell works just as well, and is slightly easier to acquire (as you can stock up to three of them).landshark wrote:While not a boss, in Sexy Parodius (may have been Goku), level 5 has a physical wall right in the middle of the level. I'm voting Air Gallet, stage4 boss for now. It takes an insane amount of damage at maximum rank, and usually takes two of my lives as well. >.<

Aside from when it tries to punch you with its claws, I can't actually recall any instant-kill attacks. The boss is fairly easy if you have Blade/FreeWay and the Thunder Sword still available.sven666 wrote:i dont remember the boss as being that hard otherwise, just that "well, im gonna kill you now" move..

Not exactly unfair, but I'd say sometimes in Batsugun the boss will be unbalanced in difficulty relative to the rest of the stage. I guess I'm making a different sort of complaint: I dislike when the stuff before the boss has you falling asleep, and then you get hit over the head. Really nice. Almost unfair.

Wouldn't just about any vert arcade final boss fit in this thing? I mean, the business trick is to encourage a credit feeding as much as possible when the player is just that close to the end...yeah?

This is not a shooter, but I just HAVE to vent about Dogosouken/Victory Road:
Your characters move like arthritic snails through molasses, you get to a f***ing worm boss that chases you around the screen, little enemies spawn all over the screen, there is a timer that causes bomb arrows to drop from the sky if you don't hurry up and (get this) YOUR NORMAL SHOTS BOUNCE OFF THE BOSS. You have to kill him with bombs, which is hardly possible since he keeps on trailing you all over the screen. WTF, SNK? Whoever designed that kind of FUBAR gameplay must commit seppuku to wash away the dishonor he brought upon his family.
Thanks.

No Miss? Heh, no. True Aki and DOOM are pretty much equal for bullet-spamming and Extend-stealing capabilities.BulletMagnet wrote:I don't watch many replays, but pretty much every one I've seen of him involves the player dying repeatedly, and just outlasting him because they had a load of lives saved up...is there a replay out there of anyone no-missing him?
I've heard there's a way to influence the last pattern so that one of the bullet spamming fireball streams is fired off to the side of the screen, reducing the amount of bullets to dodge. I haven't seen a replay around where this happens, however. Maybe the resident Mushi players might have a bit more info. (TWE? GaijinPunch?)

I don't think it's that hard; I've 1cced verytex a couple of time. There is a blind spot in the upper right corner of the screen. You got to love that music; so freaking 80s...Ceph wrote:I nominate Veritex (Mega Drive) as number 1 contender.

Eclaire Tonnerre seemed to be a pretty unfair final boss, but people found out that she can be no-missed by Haruhi (Fujioka)
Ergo Proxy had a Gradius-quality final boss. Pathetic.
Black Lagoon's first boss of the second loop is some sick shit, though.
serious reply:
Has anyone gotten past the last pattern of the RF1 boss without bombing?

I don't know if anyone's ever 1LC'ed Mushihimesama, but in the Mushihimesama DVD, you can see TGA-RET basically surviving the whole fight with Aki without losing a single life. (Although he does lose a life before the Aki.)Icarus wrote:No Miss? Heh, no. True Aki and DOOM are pretty much equal for bullet-spamming and Extend-stealing capabilities.
