Just had a proper go, and it's either a very good port or a very accurate emulation. I used to be able to complete several routes back in the 80s/90s but will be needing some practice get that good again. I wish there was an option to turn scanline scaling off though. Regardless how the screen size is scaled in the options, the scanlines are always variable.

Another small request - does anyone know where I can find a map showing what all the zones look like, and what boss is at the end of each?

The Darius Wiki has a list of all the zones and their bosses. I'm afraid I don't know of a map showing the zones' themes.

Thanks. I may have to make one myself for quick reference. I had it all memorised back in the 80s but there's little chance of that happening again.

Another question, and perhaps a little embarrassing given the number of years I've been playing this game, but is there any logic as to how much the grey bonus orbs give you when you collect them?

Nope, it's random. There are rumors floating around here and there of different techniques to influence the bonus values in different Darius games, but as far as I know none of them are true.

That's a shame then, as it makes scoring in this game pointless given the huge range the random bonuses are awarded at.

I remember in G-Darius, you're supposed to get the bonus at its top most position in its circle (or downmost ?).
But maybe it is yet another rumor mentionned by Shepardus

Three end bosses down, two to go:

[A-C-F-J-O-U-Z] Great Thing-Z

Most of the final stages are actually quite big difficulty spikes and are more challenging than I remember them being. Either that, or my reaction times aren't what they used to be!

OCR and a bunch of clever filters and other things go into that image processing. NLP and machine learning for translation. Computer Vision is going to get huge fast, as if it isn't already, with self driving cars about to hit the mainstream.

Does anyone know how to get the artwork in the borders of the screen?

The artwork's exclusive to the disc version, as is the OLD version ROM.

The PSN version received a patch today that added the old ROM version. What are the differences between old and new rom versions?

I just came here to ask this very same question.
I assume everybody should be playing the New ver., but what would be the differences between both?

Sounds like something that could use some testing. Maybe do some back to back clears to see if we can spot differences.

There were some balance changes, though I don't recall specifics beyond Fatty Glutton having less health (meaning you aren't going to get your shit wrecked for going to laser before him). I think it's mostly "minor" tweaks like that... Details would be nice though.

I always thought the Glutton changes were made for Extra. It's possible I've never actually played the "new" rom, just old and Extra. I still remember learning the Glutton fight with laser in a tournament years ago in Vanilla Darius, and it was a complete nightmare.

Oh, I assumed "new version" was referring to Extra. If they're indeed different, then I have no idea what the changes are in "New version".

Why did you bother doing laser for that fight? I found it completely impossible whenever I tried it, I still wonder who in charge of balance said that was acceptable lol.

At the time I was very set on killing G.T. via Z' (a bad idea scoring-wise for the tournament, I ended up submitting an X score despite the more impressive Z' clear). Anyhow I found zone P unbearable without the wave, which basically required me to learn Glutton with the laser. It's not impossible but I would consider it among the most difficult fights in the series. Honestly took more practice than say, DBAC G.T. no-laser for example.
