Re: Your thoughts about Gun Frontier?
Gun Frontier is not well known or popular enough to have "memes".
It's a personal preference, some people can't stand any game where there isn't a fast moving ship, because they like moving fast. I generally prefer fast movement as well, but I enjoy Gun Frontier the way it is due to the chunky hitboxes and play style of the game. I can see how others might not find it enjoyable though.
I do agree however that some of the flaws mentioned are mostly common traits of most 90's stg's.

"the ship speed meme" is a pretty big phenomenon that applies to many many many games made from about 1985 to 1995.
It instantly stops being a personal preference when people talk about it like it's a serious flaw with the game that the developers were apparently incompetent idiots for including.

Re: Your thoughts about Gun Frontier?
Not really, in my experience, a lot of older games have moderately to very fast ship speeds, or at least adjustable ship speeds. Gradius, Super Aleste, Biometal, Darius Gaiden, R-Type, Image Fight, Thunder Force, Mahou Daisakusen, Galmedes, V-Five, Side-Arms, Forgotten Worlds, etc. etc. There's always been a lot of diversity in ship speeds in the genre, and I don't think it's a surprise that different people have very different preferences.
If anything, I'd say ships have gotten slower in modern times due to the prevalence of focus modes and micro dodging.
No body has talked about it like it's not a personal preference. Just because one doesn't preface every statement they ever make with "in my opinion" doesn't mean they're treating it like a fact. The reason a lot of people complain about slow ships is because *gasp* a lot of people like moving fast.

Re: Your thoughts about Gun Frontier?
Impressive list. A third of those are frequently complained about by the same people you are trying to defend due to the nature of their ship speeds, a third of those make speed and everything else in the game completely worthless, and the other third of those actually kinda do apply... except now they're very unique instead of being part of a trend. It's kinda odd that your list actually is cleanly divided into three equal groups like that.
Yes it does, especially when they continually go on about how it's such a terrible flaw and the developer was an idiot for adding it.

Re: Your thoughts about Gun Frontier?
Those were all just off the top of my head. I'm not sure which ones you're referring to as "worthless" but I'm sure I'd disagree. Moving on...
I have no idea where you're getting all these "frequent complaints" and accusations of being "terrible flaws" or that "the designers were idiots". I've been on this forum 3 years or so now and I've seen very little negative talk on most those games, much less about their speed. A few posts in a thread saying "I wish the speed were a little faster" or "I wish there was an option for a faster ship" is hardly the kind of wide spread bile you're describing.
If there's some other shmups forum you're visiting where everyone is always shitting on everything, my apologies. Sounds like an awful place.

Yeah, no. Between this and the Touhou thing, you are worse than the people I'm talking about.
People usually just ignore then criticize everything I say, while ignoring then praising everything they say. You ignore everything.

Where is all this hatred? What thread did multiple people call the developers idiots? How many threads have there been like this?
And remember, implication doesn't count, because that's arguable. A sizable percentage of the forum has to have literally said "the developer is an idiot" or some other word with explicitly similar connotation, multiple times, across multiple threads, for what you are saying to be true.
The only time I've ever seen that much hate for any game is the Sine Mora thread.
Show me the links. I'll admit your right and that the forum is full of assholes if you do. I like these games and would feel the same...if I saw such behavior.

Yeah, Saturn version was an easy clear for me at least. I was pretty shocked the first time I played the arcade version (I think it was on one of the PS2 compilations), I got owned so hard.

I was so puzzled how easy it looked on youtube when I got owned at home, then found out about the Saturn version.

I probably shouldn't have responded. You can't really argue with blind seething rage. I'll call it quits on this one along with the Toohoo thread. Better to spend ones time having fun then arguing on a forum.

Re: Your thoughts about Gun Frontier?
The margin of error to Gun Frontier's final boss feels pretty slim, outside of the already-tight limitation of six shots. It feels as though you don't get a clean shot until the third or fourth pause in its bullet shield. Some of the tweaks are annoying (larger hitbox it seems, limited ammo, a real do-or-die moment), but I guess it makes up for it a little by being a novel take on a shmup final boss.

Re: Your thoughts about Gun Frontier?
Been playing this a bit for the first time Via Taito Memories after reading the thread. Thoughts:
- Graphics/art/conept are excellent. Exactly the kind of look and feel I want in my shmups.
- Sound effects are horrible. Why are those tanks farting?
- Music is awesome.
- Hitbox is hell, and feels wrong for a game with such slow ship speed and dense patterns. Wouldn't say it ruins the game since you can work around it, but the game would allow more creativity with a little speed increase. As-is it feels like it's in the Darius II "Do it this way or die" camp.
- Lotsa cool gameplay details in the stages. I really like how you can prevent the two big tanks from attacking in the first stage by destroying their hangars quickly.
- This game is so Yagawa. If I didn't know the history I would have thought he made it himself.
Might play more, but I'll probly use states in MAME for the initial learning process given the apparent memo-heavy nature of it. I don't think you can wing it much farther than stage 3 without a really solid plan.

Re: Your thoughts about Gun Frontier?
Prolly my most precious pcb in my collection, cleaned it up and changed to fresh caps.
Works really nice with the Reco pcb setting up rapid fire on button 3.
Anyone know if there is a difference in points in where you destroy the first two big tanks in stg 1?
(Seems to vary for me when taking them out after or before the bridge.)

Love this game. I remember I was so impressed when I first saw the waterfall in stage 2. I wasn't very good at it, so I got to see that waterfall quite often

Too bad I sold my Gun Frontier PCB before designing the RECO, so I never go to experience the autofire.. and mashed the NeoGeo joypad hard. I still regret selling it.Works really nice with the Reco pcb setting up rapid fire on button 3.
Re: Your thoughts about Gun Frontier?
After some more playing I would really like a visible Rank counter/meter.
Battling at stage 5, very unforgiving.
