Shmup Minigames- Hidden Treasure!
Re: Shmup Minigames- Hidden Treasure!
As they say in Japan:" You have to touch plenty of witches before you can play Star Radish"...
...also found this article which details all the shooter minigames in the Tokimeki Memorial franchise- there's Psyth on the Saturn as well as Space Ring Fighter, Melting Point, Star Crasher and Conquer!

Re: Shmup Minigames- Hidden Treasure!
Fate/Unlimited Codes (PSP; the PS2 version probably has it too, but I don't know for sure) has a hori shmup minigame called Cashooter.

Re: Shmup Minigames- Hidden Treasure!
Actually, Cashooter is exclusive to the PS2 version of Unlimited Codes. Unfortunately, only the PSP version made it outside Japan.
Re: Shmup Minigames- Hidden Treasure!
Estebang, I played it in the English PSP version, so it's not exclusive. I couldn't have played it on PS2 because I haven't played through missions in the PS2 version.

The final boss fight in Magic Knight Rayearth for Saturn is in the form of a vertical shooter.

Couldn't find it listed on Gamefaqs, how do you unlock it?donotcare95 wrote:Estebang, I played it in the English PSP version, so it's not exclusive. I couldn't have played it on PS2 because I haven't played through missions in the PS2 version.
Re: Shmup Minigames- Hidden Treasure!
That reminds me of the mandatory Galaga '88 loading mini-game in Ridge Racer Revolution. Shame not every RR titles have such mini-game, though.Cuilan wrote: Ridge Racer 7 lets you play Xevious during the initial loading screen.
Re: Shmup Minigames- Hidden Treasure!
I just discovered that
SD Gundam Psycho Salamander no Kyoui (1991)
has a hori-like second stage (probably others as well).
Since it's really a platformer (Castlevania / Cadash-alike, actually) at heart, though, expect funny weapons like a morning star you can swing in a circle around you, but not options and the like.
It appears this isn't the game on the Bandai Playdia - shame, that, because it's actually pretty fun. I was looking for Psycho-Nics Oscar and found this game, which is essentially the same concept but better done in many respects (doesn't have Data East's crazy atmospheric background statues and sculptures, but on the plus side you aren't reliant on Psycho-Nics Oscar's mouse-like, ground-hugging "missile" weapon).

I've had Fate UC since release and I had no idea it had a shooter minigame. Perhaps this is the Eighting/Raizing connection here... WTF, as internet people would say.

I own the first two Doki Majo games, but I never did get around to buying the 3rd one. I should pick it up some time, and not just because of Star Radish; I genuinely like the series.mjclark wrote:As they say in Japan:" You have to touch plenty of witches before you can play Star Radish"...

I've owned the Saturn port of Tokimeki Memorial for about 10 years now. I was addicted to it for quite a while after I got it, and that was before I found out about the minigames hidden in it. Even though I've known about the minigames for a couple of years now, I didn't get around to unlocking them until tonight (I even got Saki-chan's good ending in the process! Was trying to get Megumi though...). I guess this thread and that article you posted finally motivated me enough to do it. Psyth is pretty cool, last boss is a pain in the ass though. And as much as I like the Twinbee series, I kinda wish the Saturn port had Force Gear instead of Twinbee Time Attack (still fun though).

Re: Shmup Minigames- Hidden Treasure!
For people wanting to unlock Cashooter in Fate/Unlimited Codes (PSP), it's unlocked the same way the other minigames are unlocked—in this case, by clearing enough of Caster's missions to unlock the bonus mission (minigame). The first time you play it, it's only one level, but it has more if you play through it again.
It's not a particularly good shooter, mind you.

Re: Shmup Minigames- Hidden Treasure!
Rayman 2 The Great Escape had a secret shmup minigame called Menezis that you could play after the credits.
You pilot the letter E and fight against the other letters of the alphabet.
The horror game Penumbra Black Plaque had an unlockable shmup that was literally called Schmup.exe.
And Shadows of the Damned had a level that turned into a shmup out of literally nowhere.

Wow, the Penumbra guy sounds hilarious. I want to hear him do some schmup reviews along with forum legend Rob The Alaskanian.Jaimers wrote:The horror game Penumbra Black Plaque had an unlockable shmup that was literally called Schmup.exe.

Shadows of the Damned looks pretty...odd...RE4 without satisfying hit response I guess.
Yep, the Suda51 schmup is going to be exactly like that, no question about it.

How about that one in Starcraft 2 that looks cool but has horrid input lag
Re: Shmup Minigames- Hidden Treasure!
God damn(ed), that Shadows of the Damned shmup minigame looks atrocious! The sad thing is that it was probably Suda's idea.
Re: Shmup Minigames- Hidden Treasure!
I enjoyed the shmup mini-game in NMH, but that's probably because when I played through it I was really into that game. Despite the overt simplicity of the bonus shmup, I had a little fun with it.TransatlanticFoe wrote:Both No More Heroes games had shmup minigames - the first was based on the fictional mecha anime while the second was a fictional loli anime. Both were just a single level though.
Does the inclusion of Gradius as a bonus arcade game in Legend of the Mystical Ninja for SNES count? Or the 2 shmuppy levels in Super Mario Land for Game Boy? Still love those levels, they're fun to play through.
Re: Shmup Minigames- Hidden Treasure!
That one is just awful to play with a keyboard, looks nice though!chronicdog wrote:How about that one in Starcraft 2 that looks cool but has horrid input lag

The entirety of Sasuke vs Commander is hidden in Famicom Guevara (ommited from the US release, Guerilla).
Not strictly a shmup but... shmuppy. And awesome.

Yep, Force Gear is an exclusive mini-shmup for the PC Engine platform (with the PCE Tokimeki Memorial release) indeed...plays just fine on the ol' NEC Turbo Duo console as well for good measure.Cuilan wrote:I own the first two Doki Majo games, but I never did get around to buying the 3rd one. The FC version lacks score and has only one life, though. I'm guessing it was left out of the US version because it was unfinished. I read here that it has the font for the score, but the bar on the side is left empty.Skykid wrote:The entirety of Sasuke vs Commander is hidden in Famicom Guevara (ommited from the US release, Guerilla).

Re: Shmup Minigames- Hidden Treasure!
That game's so brutal, it's the only reason I haven't cleared Hell Temple (I've done everything else except the "120000 here" thing that requires the minigame). The developers also made a similar Java game prior to La-Mulana, called GR3, and it's also quite a challenge, especially the "Re-death" version.MathU wrote:La-Mulana has a great little Parodius clone.
Re: Shmup Minigames- Hidden Treasure!
No score counter? That sucks. A shame they couldn't have added that in. Perhaps they wanted to avoid reminding anyone of the scoring travesty present in Guevara - two absolute score based fails on one cart, despite two superb games!BrianC wrote:The FC version lacks score and has only one life, though. Alice Madness Returns has a couple of areas in the 2nd world that play kind of like Scramble.

Yakuza 0 has Fantasy Zone. Can't wait to see club sega games in Yakuza 6 & 1 remake.

I would love to see Boxcelios 3 show up in Yakuza 6, it had such an addicting formula.

Totally. I'd support a standalone release with deeper gameplay. Is there an end to these games, though? I see on youtube that someone reached level 181 on Boxcelios 2.nekketsu wrote:Now that is cool!kayakoyaka wrote:Yakuza 0 has Fantasy Zone. Can't wait to see club sega games in Yakuza 6 & 1 remake.

The Wonderful 101 got some shmupy love.
There are two stages in a Viewpoint perspective, with weaponary similar to Gradius and another one who is more alike to Space Harrier.
I think they are well made and fun to play.
