Shmup Minigames- Hidden Treasure!

Post by mjclark »

After getting interested in Guardian Wing it's just dawned on me how much fun I have with shmups that are minigames contained within another title:
Gun Duel in Retro Game Challenge on DS
Strato Patrol EOS in Kirby Mass Attack on DS
Guardian Wing in Kita E White Illumination on Dreamcast
and that Buranyanman! we're raving about started as a minigame in the H-game Musumaker
and that The Under Stellar 2 that is blowing me away was a minigame on the Gunners Broom DVD
oh yeah- and Geometry Wars in Project Gotham Racing 2 on Xbox.

So there's got to be lots and lots of others some obvious, some forgotten, some never played.
Suggestions please- maybe we could get a list together... :D

No More Heroes 2 has a terrible shmup minigame. I believe it's based off a nonexistent mecha anime in the game's universe. I've heard that one of the Yakuza games, either 3 or 4, also has one.

Do shmup variety stages in non-shmup games count? Rocket Knight Adventures (with its Big Core cameo) and Kirby's Return to Dreamland are the first to come to mind.

There's a Thunder Force-esque one at the end of Segagaga. It takes a lot of patience to actually get through the main game to acces it, though; patience I don't have. Also, Quarth exists within Ganbare Goemon DS, and there's stage 1 of Gradius and Xexex in Ganbare Goemon 1 and 2 on the SNES.
So, are we expected to turn our TV on its side?!

3 and 4 actually, Boxcelios 1 and 2 respectively. Although I don't own Yakuza 3 I played the shit out of Boxcelios in the demo when my PS3 worked. It's a neat concept game where instead of dodging bullets or shooting tons of enemies you try to destroy one huge enemy at a time as fast as possible with a timer counting down in place of health or lives. Looks really pretty too.

A mini version of Phalanx with an addictive scoring system is featured on the fighting game Zero Divide.

Metal Slug 3 has that score-a-thon space shooting segment. Metal Slug 6 features a segment with Rootmars holding you while you have limited movement. You have to take an alternate route on stage 3 or 4 if I remember.
Of course, that's just an opinion.

Arguably, every instance of the Plane and Helicopter Slugs in Metal Slug would count as a shmup segment.

Both No More Heroes games had shmup minigames - the first was based on the fictional mecha anime while the second was a fictional loli anime. Both were just a single level though.

Super Paper Mario has a world that's shmup-like (hori), and then the boss ends up adding power, shield, and speed-up items.

There's a mini shmup game to be played during the ending credits of Namco's JPN region Tenkomori Shooting PCB & World region Tenkomori Variety Shooting PCB.

A mini LCD game of Pocket Ray for the Sony Pocketstation handheld, is downloadable from the PSX game of Ray Crisis as a bonus. Techincally not a true shmup but more of an "Lock On" type of game in reality.

Some of the Goemon games have added shooting game levels - Xexex on a SFC release, and a launch DS title adds the first level of Space Manbow (want to check that Goemon out, looks cool).

Tokimemi Memorial is maybe one that should be most famous here, as Force Gear looks very complete.

Gun Duel is only in the Japan-only sequel, Game Center CX: Arino's Challenge 2 (Arino no Chousenjou 2). Star Prince is in all titles (but modified to a score attack mode in the sequel).
Painfully bad and useless filler, at least on the xbawks.

Oops!- You're quite right
Star Prince is a bit dull but Gun Duel is a superb Compile style bit of brilliance.
I made a ropey pre-Camtasia vid of it here.
It's so fine it would merit a full release...
...and has anybody here played Guardian Wing on Dreamcast?
The thread about it is as desolate as my facebook page lol

The third of SNK's DS witch groping simulators, Doki Majo Plus, includes the shmup Star Radish. It's an obvious homage to Hudson's Star Soldier.

Xevious is your reward for getting all silver medals in Star Fox Assault (Namco developed the game; you also pick up Rally-X flags as bonus items in missions).

I am still literally crying with laughter after reading that, but Star Radish actually looks rather good...

Star Prince is the better game, actually, when you consider the score attack play style.

Gun Duel is just too boring, unfortunately. I suppose I could try to get every last bonus I'm missing in my highscore, but the main thing making me hate it are the stupid high-level Daily Challenges with absurd shit like "kill 500 enemies" (i.e. go to a boss after letting a spy camera escape, and just shoot down the extra enemies with flamethrower for a solid hour).

- There's Space Blaster in Work Time Fun on PSP. It's VERY short though, meant more as a time attack (There's an achievement for beating it in 2 minutes)
- Not sure if it counts, since it's like a third of the game: The mosquito levels in Rayman Origins.
- I'm inclined to say one of the PS2 Grand Theft Auto games had one. It might have been San Andreas? It was not fun though.
- I also hear Instant Brain (360) has a little minigame called DODONPACHI!
That's all I can think of.

Yes, San Andreas. And the mini-game is a Gyruss clone.

I thought that too (and the bizarre "Duality" thing), which means there are 3 shmup mini-games in GTA SA.

Four! Duality, They Crawled from Uranus (the Gyruss clone), Let's Get Ready to Bumble, and Go Go Space Monkey. Duality and Bumble are more collecty than shooty, though.

You can also download a save with it unlocked.

As far as the topic goes, I think my favorite mini-shooters are that one from Segagaga, the one from Turrican II, King Galaxian from Pac-Man World, The Lovers from JoJo's Bizarre Adventure, and Marine Pop & Sky Pop from Super Mario Land. One of the worst is the vert section in Metal Slug 3.

There's Ridge Racer's Galaga loading screen, but I can't remember if it automatically kicks you out when the main game has finished loading (I think it does).
So, are we expected to turn our TV on its side?!
