Is anyone using the HLSL options with the newer games? I found Mushihimesama especially looked kind of ... bad ... without scanlines. Way too blocky.

240x320 scaled up to fit a biggish monitor (possibly LCD) looks blocky? That's unheard of!

Seriously tho, I think the games looks pretty decent with or without scanlines.

Changing the subject completely

u8 supports an Alpha Mission 2 (ASO2) Neogeo prototype dumped by Brian Hargrove.

I know this will get entirely overshadowed by the Cave work, but it's a pretty cool proto, and quite clearly a much earlier version of the game, no proper attract demo, different music, less levels, less options in service mode (where it's still called ASO2 regardless of region)

Personally, I'd rather shmups not be in HD.

That also goes for beat 'em ups and platformers. I love that old school look, there's just nothing like it.

Being a pixel artist I have to agree with this to some extent.

I would not have anything against HD if that is the resolution the game was made at to begin with. I am not a huge fan of the HD stuff on the Cave ports. Apart from Akai Katana they are halfassed and AK has shit scaling :/

So does u8 supercede the last build you posted here?
And can someone compile it quick????

And yeah- this does get a bit CAVEcentric when one of the beauties of MAME is access to obscurer shmups :D

Yeah I know, it sounds dumb, but I've been using MAME for years now on LCD monitors and it's never bothered me. I don't mind some crispy jaggy pixels, but for some reason this recent stuff looks noticeably bad without scanlines.

Anyhow, I've found a combo of settings that looks decent enough to me. Scanlines it is!

I agree with you there that the older stuff, with proper pixelart, such as dodonpachi for example, looks better than the newer mainly prerendered art. Tho scanlines help a lot.

u8 is slightly newer than the last posted build, there are no real functional changes tho.

HLSL looks pretty sweet with the settings posted at

but if you interested - Demul requires something like 1.7Ghz C2D for fullspeed cv1000 emulation (speedhacks is not used)
2) under MAME and at fullspeed ? I think no, even if someday MAME will have SH4 recompiler, Naomi's GPU is too complex for software emulation with good speed.
I'm looking forward to play that by the end of next year on Win8 tablets then (new atom CPUs) or are my hopes and dreams set too high ? I guess we'll see ^^

that's hideous

just use directdraw without any enhancements at a resolution that scales well from the original

Havent tried any of these SH-3 games yet but Im a bit surprised when I read about how stressful the emulation is for the cpu? This could easily be the most demanding non-3D game in mame. But why is that? I read that apart from the Sound its pretty much optimized as much as possible. Gpu is not a factor In mame right, so its All down to the cpu. Looks like you need a dual core 3ghz to hope to get 100% emulation? Thats pretty wild considering cps3 ans killer instinct runs fine on a single core amd 2000+

I'm sure Killer Instinct doesn't have two thousand shimmering objects moving around in every possible direction at a given time. :D

And the sh3 clocks at 133mhz cps and midway board for KI are not even half of that.
