light gun question

Post by Pshooter »

some light guns have the video cable plug thing. do you have to use that for the light gun to work, or can you just plug it into the controller port? I use the s-video input for my tv, so i wouldnt be able to use the one's i've seen on some light guns that only plug into the standard rca video jack.

Console guns need the composite video input to work. the scart plugs I use have a seperate composite plug just for this...not sure if the s-video cables also have this or not.

Search for a so called Guncon-adapter which is sort of like an extension for your video out of your playstation with a block having red, white and yellow cinch plugs and a psx like video out connector to connect your s-video cable to.

The Guncons (1&2) are not Svideo compatible unless you use the aforementioned adapter. However, the guns are component compatible. To make 'em work this way, you have to plug the gun connector to the green in a component-able TV and the green component connector on top of the gun connector. The accuracy of the guns is really good if you hook them up this way; I can even shoot at the corners with no trouble (can't say the same when they're hooked through composite.)

If you don't have a component-able TV, I pity you. Everybody else who has one and is a light gun fan has to go get a component cable pronto.

are there any light guns for the PS1 that you just plug into the controller port and that's all? or do they all have the video jack adapter thing also?

The Guncon is the only one I know that's to be plugged to the video. There are PS1 guns that plug directly into the controller port (look for lightguns in online stores.) However, don't expect great accuracy or compatibility with Guncon games (TC, TCPT, PB1 PB2, and PB3), and really, the only thing worth playing on PS1 that doesn't require the Guncon is Elemental Gearbolt (but you should be playing it with a Guncon.)

I just found Elemental Gearbolt for 9.99 plus shipping, so i grabbed it. I've heard that you don't need the guncon for it, as exact precise aiming isnt required like in the time crisis games.

Be careful - the guncon basically split the light gun market for the PS1...

There are games that support the guncon and not the regular guns (Time Crisis, Point Blank, etc.)

There are the games that support the regular guns but not guncons (Area 51, Maximum Force, etc.)

Then there are some games like Elemental Gearbolt that support both.

Thankfully most of the PS1 non-guncon light gun games were also released on Saturn. I've found the Saturn's stunner gun is every bit as accurate as Namco's guncon, but without the video plug-in.

Unscathed, are you sure about the Guncons working with component able TVs? I've never heard of that before. If that's the case, I'm hella happy! Unfortunately, I'm too scared to try it...okay, too lazy also.

^ They work on my TV :). And I posted about it over at Gamefaqs and the responses were positive.

It makes no difference which input you use on your TV. The male RCA is designed to fit an adaptor or in some cases like my situation, into the back of the SCPH1000 which has an RCA jack on it.

Nothing on the guncon itself goes anywhere near the TV, it only plugs into the console.

More than likely your console only has a AV port, so you will need the namco guncon adaptor. Or a lead like this -

Thanks, Unscathed! I actually tried it and it worked perfectly! Figuring out how to get past Virtua Cop Rebirth's gun calibration screen was a BITCH, though. Good! Now I can finally open Crisis Zone without having a separate gun game station. Happy shooting!

I can't say for sure whether that gun would work, but my guess would be no.

The guncon 2 is not compatible with the ps1 shooters, and the guncon 1 is not compatible with the ps2 shooters, so I would assume other guns would have similar incompatibilities.

the description of the gun says it's for ps2 and ps1. do you have to use the video cable jack part of the gun, or will the accuracy be horrible if you don't plug it in to the video jack?

found the solution to anyone who wants to use a Guncon, but also wants to use an s-video cable rather than the standard rca video jack:
