Soukyu-Gurentai on PS1
Soukyu-Gurentai on PS1
Hi guys, just some quick questions regarding this game..
After what seems like the end of the game - the big blue jet endboss, a story plays - mostly some Japanese stuff I can't understand. Then all the sudden it puts me back in the game against this huge space station. After shooting all the enemies in this "level", my ship just sits there, I can still shoot, but a timer counts down. When it reaches 0, it asks Continue?, if I chose yes, it puts me back at the beginning of this space-station level. My question is - how does one defeat this space station and/or pass the level?
The other question, I like 2D dark/military type shooters like Raiden DX, 194*, Toaplan Shooting Battle stuffs, [Do]DonPachi & of course Soukyu-Gurentai, what are some other good shooters in this style for the PS1?
thanks and best regards,

Have you checked out Strikers 1945 yet? Also, glad to see you like Raiden DX, I worship that game as the best shooter of all time probably more than anyone else on this forum.dink wrote:The other question, I like 2D dark/military type shooters like Raiden DX, 194*, Toaplan Shooting Battle stuffs, [Do]DonPachi & of course Soukyu-Gurentai, what are some other good shooters in this style for the PS1?

My memory's isn't clear enough as it's been a very while since the last time I've completed it, but if I recall you must keep shooting your way through until the screen stops scrolling and there's what appears to be the space station's command center/bridge/core (superweapon?) that you can shoot, destroy it to complete the final level. The enemy won't stop coming on that point though so you might want to ignore them.dink wrote:Hi guys, just some quick questions regarding this game..

@Emo Fox Jet Pilot: Thanks for the suggestion, Strikers 1945 seems just what I'm looking for
I was always a fan of the Raiden series on PC Engine/TG16, and I just happened to stumble upon Raiden DX for PS1 about a few weeks ago and its now definitely one of my favorites!
@Gespenst: I'll keep trying, though it seems whenever I get to the bridge, all the firepower at me stops, and the timer counts down. Hopefully its not something wrong with my disk.
best regards,

Sonic Wings Special (avoid the PAL version).dink wrote:The other question, I like 2D dark/military type shooters like Raiden DX, 194*, Toaplan Shooting Battle stuffs, [Do]DonPachi & of course Soukyu-Gurentai, what are some other good shooters in this style for the PS1?
I didn't find any Raiden game particulary dark, but Assault (Namco Museum Volume 4) looks like a proto-Raiden of sorts (graphically). Playable enough with PlayStation gamepad in twin sticks' stead.
Battle Formula (SunSoft Vol. 6 of Memorial Series).
Vulgus (Capcom Generations 3: The First Generation) and Gun.Smoke (Capcom Generations 4: Blazing Guns) if you want dark.
If your PSX is chipped, you might try NES emulation (pretty popular solution in some circles).
Mind you, Strikers 1945 in the US doesn't have tate mode and is really Strikers 1945 II (whereas the original Strikers 1945 on Japanese PSX is a rather infamous port).

Also, isn't this bit only found in the arranged game mode added to the PS1 release (which is somewhat confusingly default instead of arcade mode)?Gespenst wrote:My memory's isn't clear enough as it's been a very while since the last time I've completed it, but if I recall you must keep shooting your way through until the screen stops scrolling and there's what appears to be the space station's command center/bridge/core (superweapon?) that you can shoot, destroy it to complete the final level. @Obiwanshinobi, thanks for the recommendations and clearing up the differences between Strikers 1945. Sonic Wings Special is a great game too that I didn't know about
Battle Formula, Vulgus and Gun Smoke are great on the NES, I might have to give em a try on the PSX though.
@Mortificator, I did some research, and can't find a mention of that space station in any of the longplay videos online for the other systems, so it might indeed be something [confusingly] added to the PSX version.

It's got a few extras (most notably an overpowered fourth ship), but slows down a lot, so most prefer the Saturn edition.IrishNinja wrote:huh...for some reason, i didn't even know this came to PSX. how does it fare compared to the Saturn version?
Fairly minor differences IIRC...I think they added a Battle Garegga demo and some extra Sound Test music from other Raizing games, but it plays pretty much the same (someone correct me if I misremember). How does the Soukyugurentai Otokuyo version differ from the original ?

Re: Soukyu-Gurentai on PS1
^ You beat me to it by a minute, but I might as well post anyway.
The original Souky Saturn release has an incomplete English localization on the disc that'll be triggered if you play the game on an overseas Saturn using a third-party device. On the plus side, this makes the story more understandable to English speakers; on the minus, it has some glitches, though nothing that ruins the gameplay if you're careful. Otokuyo ditches the partial localization and its accompanying glitches.
The PS1 port adds an arranged mode with various changes, like a fourth ship and lower difficulty. The arcade/Saturn version's also on there, with a little worse slowdown than on Sega's hardware.
So there's not really a version that's best, it depends on the player's priorities.

It's been awhile since I've compared the two, but I seem to recall the slowdown difference being pretty significant in this case.Mortificator wrote:The arcade/Saturn version's also on there, with a little worse slowdown than on Sega's hardware.
