Do people who dislike Mars Matrix also...
Re: Do people who dislike Mars Matrix also...
The port isn't that bad, since it's unfiltered in VGA mode, and now there's lots of options to make that look good (e.g. just add an SLG 3000).
As for the game, not a big fan of it, but I can see it's merits. I think it's too complicated though, what with the level-ups, strict chaining, directional reflecting, multiple shot types on one button, etc. Much prefer the Gigawings.

Never tried it in VGA... wouldn't have wanted to. At this point I'm about minimal hardware... but I'm also about not playing Mars Matrix, do we all win!

I'm finally enjoying the chaining in Dodonpachi so I might give Mars Matrix another go, I know it was my favourite game when I first started STGs but I've never been able to to good, mostly because of the controls (and even that, I'm sure of it, I could really like considering how kickass the few high scoring replays I've seen are).

By the way is this at all possible to do? Or at least going up in power after each stage or starting at max power?Bee Cool wrote:I would pay money for someone to make a ROM hack of Mars Matrix where shot power ups are items like typical Cave and Raizing titles instead of them being tied to the score.

The Dreamcast version has each function mapped to a different button. Play that instead of arcade/MAME, imo.VHS-porn wrote:I'm finally enjoying the chaining in Dodonpachi so I might give Mars Matrix another go, I know it was my favourite game when I first started STGs but I've never been able to to good, mostly because of the controls (and even that, I'm sure of it, I could really like considering how kickass the few high scoring replays I've seen are).

Actually what bugs me* the most are the movements for some reason, I just can't get used to it.Special World wrote: The Dreamcast version has each function mapped to a different button. Play that instead of arcade/MAME, imo.
Otherwise I quite like the idea of a single button, when possible I never use more than one in any stg anyway

Yes, but have fun trying to find someone who wants to do it.Bee Cool wrote:By the way is this at all possible to do? <S.Yagawa> I like the challenge of "doing the impossible" with older hardware, and pushing it as far as it can go.

I've been looking for the DC version of Mars Matrix forever (along with Giga Wing 2) but have never seen it "in the wild", and most of the time it's priced out of my comfort level online. What little I've played via MAME, it seems like an interesting and enjoyable game that would take some real time and dedication to get the most out of it, both of which I'd be less willing to sacrifice until I've waded through my considerably sized gaming backlog. But I am still on the lookout for a copy, regardless.

I've played Mars Matrix and while I can't speak for much of the depth of the game, I thought it was fun but aesthetically boring. I thought Gigawing wasn't as fun as MM but it certainly looked more appealing.

Gigawing is alright. I don't think I'd ever put in the time to really learn it inside and out and get the 1CC but it's okay for a couple of credits here and there.
I never liked any of Takumi's other games though.

Rob motivated me to go play Mars Matrix,
and so I did.
I don't regret it one bit.
