Back when Dreamcast was a first-run system, I bought MM for what I think was either $10 or $20 at Gamestop, and this was back in the days when you could return a game there for a full refund.

I can honestly say that the *only* reason I'm sorry that I returned the game was simply because of investment purposes. Playing the thing was awful, and I returned it the next day due to it being (what I believe to be) so poor. Good riddance to bad garbage and all that.

I prefer Gigawings aesthetic with the re-imagined propeller planes, but I have to say Mars Matrix is 10x more fun to play. The ships move so slooooooooow in Gigawing 1! It really decreases my ability to dodge bullets, but that's besides the point as the game makes it so you HAVE to use the reflect shield as much as possible in later levels.

Actually, you may be hitting on something here: I think I do tend to enjoy more slow-paced shooting games.

I don't know if I like the games themselves to be really slow, but having a ship that moves crazy fast is generally not something I enjoy.

Mars matrix annoys me because (correct me if I'm wrong) you pretty much have to chain to gain exp to level up. Also any game that requires constant tapping to shoot is an automatic pain.

I prefer Gigawing. Mars Matrix goes overboard with the one button concept, I often mess up doing the piercing cannon and start charging my mosquito attack. I'd really prefer having some separate buttons. Furthermore I dislike how they tie scoring with weapon strength, I'm doubly punished if I drop my chain because my score sucks and my shot is a pea shooter.

Mars Matrix is a creeper. The more I play it, the more I get used to the button mechanics, the more I get used to the item timing, the more I don't care about shot power even though I'm raising it faster because I'm using piece all the time, the more I like it.

Play the DC version. You can map Auto-Fire and Auto-Piercing Cannon to separate buttons. Also, no counter stop.

This is interesting to me. Let's flesh this out for a second.

I'm going to issue a yellow card to this argument in that "approaching it" needs to be generally understood by the player *before* they ever put hands upon controls, and if the game itself isn't able to communicate that via demonstration, included paperwork, or what-have-you, then yes: the game itself is at fault.

It's akin to a person seeing a video of a car being driven skillfully backwards, thinking to themselves "Wow...that's a really neat trick that driver learned to do with that vehicle. I'd like to do that, too!" So then that person goes out and buys themselves the same vehicle, only to find that the vehicle *only drives in reverse*. Of course, that info wasn't really available to the person beforehand...it just looked like a neat trick to be able to pull off. Instead, it's something completely other than what was represented to them.

Fair's fair: to a great degree (90% or above?), "understanding how to approach" a shooting game isn't rocket science, brain surgery, or deciphering Obamacare.

OT: Really wanted to love Gigawing Generations. The lack of tate option in the PS2 release was a crying shame. Couldn't really justify getting the NAOMI setup in order to play it properly.
