Dumb ass question...

Post by ~Kid Icarus~ »

I don't know anyone else that plays videogames/shmups like me. I'm the only person I know that has Ikaruga. My question is, what is the correct pronounciation? I always say it IK-A-RU-GA' but when I met DEL this one time he was like 'IKA-ROOGA'. :shock:

Apologies for the lameness of this question, but as this is one of my all time fave games, I need to know how to say it properly.

Ika rooga is how I say it.
This industry has become 2 dimensional as it transcended into a 3D world.

To the best of my knowledge, the vowels in Japanese only have one sound, unlike English:

A = "ah"
E = "eh"
I = "ee"
O = "oh"
U = "oo"

Something like that...if you want to pronounce something transliterated from Japanese, the above should usually put you on the right track, at least.

That's pretty much the way I say it while I'm playing it. :mrgreen: As for which syllable the emphasis should be placed on, I've got no idea, heh. I'd guess the "garrghhhrghhrgg." ;)

If you said ee-kah-roo-gah at EB Games, do you think they'd know what you were talking about?

The one time in my life I had to use the word was at EB Games. I remember that the guy working there and I both said eye-karuga. Oh well.

I do have an Ikaruga t-shirt now, so there's a good chance I'll have to say the word at some point in the future. Thanks for the info.

Hmm, if you said it at EB games? Probably not. They might tell you to get an Xbox though. If you said it to a shooter fan however, there's a good chance they'd know what you mean. :) Your way's the "correct" way by the way. "ee-kah-roo-gah"

I come from a part of the country where people ask for "Teekin" Tag Tournament and Goldeneye: Rouge Agent, so you can only imagine the massacres of language I have to put up with. :P

I always find interesting how english-speaking people find hard to know how to speak japanese words. Japanese vowels are said just like portuguese vowels, so there's no dificulty for me.

"ee-kah-roo-gah" is the right way. but "ee-kah-roo-gah" nearly makes no sense for me, as I speak portuguse. For me, Ikaruga is just Ikaruga, the way its written is the way its said.

its the same for "Gradius". For us, it's a very easy word... or Darius or Shippu Mahou Daisakusen....... :)

Now, "Tomb Raider", "Mortal Kombat", "Samurai Shodown", "Winning Eleven", "Einhander"... It's hard to find people around here who can say those names correctly :)

Worth noting that each syllable should be said short and punchy, not extended... If you're going for Japanese pronounciation that is...

"i" as in lid,
"ka" as in car
"ru" as in rude
"ga" as in gun

Also, jap R isn't really like our R sound, more of a cross between R and L... not too hard to learn... just thought I'd make a note of that...

Should this be in a FAQ of shooters, along with an MP3 or WAV of the spoken pronunciation? :P

It seems that "GRAH-dee-us" is more the official pronunciation, from V, though Einhänder is mispronounced in the intro according to real German :? [eyen-HINT-er]

Darius is "da-RYE-us" for a reason I can't remember.

Darius is romanized improperly, if you look at the kana. It is :
Da-ra-i-a-su. As stated before, Japanese vowels are very concrete in their prounciation. Ikaruga would be "i-ka-ru-ga", with the strongest emphasis on the "ka".

The name itself holds its routes in Persia/west Asia. Pronounced Dar-yoose there. Darius is a pretty rare name now but it does still exist today for some people. There's no "right" pronounciation due as a proper name given the differnet languages and dialects it's used in now, it's just whatever the person who's name it is wants. Dare-ee-us and Dahr-ee-us are the most commonly accepted western pronounciations.

As someone said earlier though, Darius in and of itself is something of a mistranslation of the Japanese name, so I'd say there's no "right" or "wrong" way to say the westernized name of the series.

Yup, he was the son of Cyrus the Great actually, who's hiring of some Spartan mercenaries in the long run inspired THE WARRIORS. :P

Darius was a selfish asshole though as the history books go, he was the primary reason for the Persian Empire's rapid decline as the Greeks rose to power. "Persia" would go through another golden age with tons of intellectual advancement but nothing that could touch what happened while Cyrus was in charge.

You should have asked him if in the song "Protoculture" when he mentions "Batsu" he's referring to Batsugun.

I love that song. Klonoa, Herzog Zwei, and Panzer Dragoon Zwei are totally screwed up pronunciation-wise though, so I wouldn't go with his pronunciation.
