shmups.org represented on Resogun - Update W/Expo Images

Post by Skykid »

At Eurogamer expo. Went to the dev talk for Resogun on PS4 and was dying to get a go at the tournament afterwards. Last guy up to play, I waved my way through the crowd, and the previous chap was the high scorer. Needless to say cleared the whole phase + boss and won! Got a t-shirt and had the developers sign it.

Had a chat with the housemarque devs and they're crazy shmup fans. Resogun is basically Defender of the future, and incredible. Dodonpachi being name dropped as an in-house favourite. ;)

Awesome show, Ninja Gaiden Z is... wild. Snapped a bunch of pics that I'll try to post up later. Mario Kart 8 looks great, as does 3DS Zelda.

EDIT:

Didn't get to Tokyo Game Show in the end, couldn't make it in time, but EG Expo was quite awesome, a good stand-in. Some pics:

Someone who works there is even a member here. Don't remember his name but distinctly remember a discussion where he explained that the way to make a financially successful game is to... get it fully funded by Sony. :D

Well they did it with their Asteroids-clone, and are doing it with their Defender-clone. Don't have or plan to get a PS3 or PS4 so these games aren't for me. But I might have to get the PS5 if they do a Space Invaders clone for it.

Resogun is a beautiful thing. PS4 lynchpin for me.

Speaking of Sony, weird.

As I'm here as press I was told I wasn't allowed to play any games in the PS4 zone, and some woman tried to throw me out because she thought I hadn't registered as a jounalist. And in a jokey way, a girl manning the Killzone section said if she saw me playing she'd kick my ass.

That's some confidence in the product, what the hell? :?

Watching a VF5 tourney atm.

SHMUPSBASSADOR

I haven't heard of Resogun before. The circular field looks like a good idea to avoid needing a radar.

Well I had to ask during the dev talk Q&A how much of an influence Defender was on the concept, since:

Wraparound play area: Defender
Reversible ship direction: Defender
Save humans from ground level for points: Defender
Aggressive merciless homing enemies: Defender
Entire world exploding: Defender

But it's no imitation. It looks incredible and scoring tricks are abundant. You build a boost that lets you either escape incoming enemies or smash right through them for bonus points, as you're invincible when using it. There's an awesome bomb that rips 360 degrees around the cylinder and a power up overdrive beam that freezes everything while you obliterate nearby enemies- big risk and reward factor, since you can let them swamp you to near collision before letting it go for crazy digits. Best of all are the mammoth bosses. First one is an Ikaruga style wheel that rolls at you with bullet hell patterns and requires you to navigate inside, through laser barriers to destroy the core.

I can see this being a massive scoring hook for next gen, and it's being given for free to PSN users on launch.

Was impressed.

What's that white console with the PCE type controllers? Never seen such a thing before.

Resogun looks pretty good in the video. Gradius boss and everything (shoot the core).

They had a retro bay. It's some bullshit fake NES as far as I could tell. Wasn't too impressed with Replay's retro area at all. Mame cabs with terrible sticks, running Snes emulators. SFIV with awful sticks, LCD's for Metal Slug and N64 games. Not great.

But the show overall was pretty spectacular, two floors of every new thing about to come to market. Xbox One is enormous, PS4 is slim, but I don't like the weird shape much. Controller felt very similar to dual shock, but there's definitely some small improvement been made and the design feels more solid.

The person who uploaded this video says he came second in the competition, but was the only one to have defeated the boss.

Yeah not too impressive. A famiclone connected to a 16:9 LCD at the retro area. Well it does bring back memories of playing with a setup like that once or twice about 10 years ago so why not I suppose LOL. I kinda understand the MAME cabs though, after all they are a product they hope to sell so it makes sense to show them at place like this...

Yeah, he'd be the Scottish fella who played before me. Totally nice guy, came up and offered a handshake afterward. His gal filmed that on her phone. Dunno about the boss thing, thought I made it go boom... (or maybe that was me lol). I had a whole mil extra on his score and it was the first time any of us played it. :shrugs:

No-one filmed my run. :(
