In addition to what the others have said, they also make you feel really cool.

This thread put me in a MM mood, so I recorded a little better chain for stage 3 (+1975, 1.9 million exp). 2.6mb
Pretty sick, Rob.

Here's a level 1 video (1027 chain, 490,000 exp): http://rapidshare.de/files/7470744/mm1-1027c.avi.html

I'll try to get a complete stage 2 chain this weekend for good measure. :o

Excellent vids rob:)

I'd love to see this, i've only ever managed a full level chain once on stage 2, the mid-section is so dry of cubes. I just gave up at the end and just went for two smaller ones. :?

Just managed to bridge the gap but blew it since I hadn't bothered to practice the entire stage.

The critical section (30 sec clip, midstage): http://rapidshare.de/files/7473486/mm2-aghh.avi.html

Maybe this will help? On that next page (after you click 'free') scroll down toward the bottom and wait about 15 seconds. Then the download will appear in large type. Click on that to be duly impressed.

Level 2 complete chain (1488 - 570,000 exp): 8mb

One major flaw: I think I missed about 100 small cubes at the end (150,000+ exp) by not absorbing the large ship attacks (you can get 4+ volleys of 30 or so bullets and I only got one).

Level 4?

Just some ignorant/unimportant questions for Rob, or anyone else that cares to answer. Please ignore if they're annoying.

1. How do you make videos? Do you do so by playing on MAME or can you do so on the DC?
2. If you play on the DC, do you use the standard controller for MM? (I don't think it's a terrible controller-- I guess I'm just wondering if you prefer a stick for DC shmups generally.)
3. Just curious whether you prefer to map the various commands to different buttons-- it seems a bit easier to me though sometimes I like having just one or two buttons to worry about.

well:

2. The joystick is, in my opinion, better, as it's easier to throw back bullets at the right angle. It is a matter of practice and habit, though.

3.Be careful about using the auto piercing cannon, when switching to other modes, you will get a small delay. It can be extremely risky in situations in which you need to to reflect immediately after a piercing blast.

Ah Rob, smooth job on stage 2, but yeah, i think that you can squeeze about a +100 on the overall chain.

I can't view any of these videos. That lame site keeps telling me I've downloaded 29842 KB in an hour and can't download anymore without subscribing. I haven't downloaded anything though :(

Could anyone put these somewhere else maybe perhaps please?

1. Video capture device + VCR. I have a Dazzle Digital Video Creator 80 and it works well enough. I hook the DC up through a VCR (which unfortunately is A/V, mono), record. Then hook the VCR up to the cable that connects to the comp, rewind, hit play and transfer.
2./3. Standard controller, one button for each command (left = auto-piercing, bottom = single shot/absorb, right = rapid shot).

All of this talk about MM-- I had to set Dragon Blaze aside for a few days. Really my ONLY complaint: Doesn't level 2 seem a bit long? I love how intense MM is, but with this level of intensity I need frequent breaks. Granted, there are stretches in level 2 where things mellow out, but I still feel that the level is a bit too long.
Still one of the best games I've ever played. Period.

Thanks for the responses Rob & Rando. I might try going back to the stick, but right now I feel most comfortable with the dpad w/ one button for each command.

The length of Level 2 has never really bothered me personally, thanks to the frequent breaks in action. What I really dislike about it is trying to keep a chain once you get to the turrents and progress through the tank/spaceship bullet field. It's impossible for me.

Thanks for mirroring them, Tychom.

Stage 4 here (1896 chain - 810,000 exp). 6mb*

*yep, named it wrong

Wish I could post it at a little higher quality because the compression makes the action a bit hard to see in the final quarter. Slightly different timing and I could have received a bigger payoff at the end, again.
