Not sure if that's such a great trade, cost wise. I've got a TCII, but it's bloody broken innit! Like most of the other stuff I came back to after my travels. Thanks shmups forum!

The chap who sold me that Parodius Deluxe with no inlay cover, feel free to chirp up any time.

Frogger - old favourite, got a lovely condition original Sega/Gremlin one from Retroclinic.

Image

Colony 7 - seriously rare, bought untested, shipped with shitty packaging and ... it works! There were a bunch of wire patch repairs on it that didn't do anything (seriously, checked with a meter), so I pulled them off, cleaned it all up - great condition now.

Image

Colony 7 is a pain to make a JAMMA adapter for. Not only is it all pin headers, but the volume control and dip switches are remote too, so I had to make this monster to play it.

Yeah, those early to mid-1980s arcade PCBs that pre-date the Jamma standard, they sure do require a custom-made Jamma harness if it needed be.

Any screenshots of Colony 7 up & running?

Made a video. Probably should have remembered to rotate it. The noise for the alien that moves along the top of the screen is really cool.

Yep, it would do - Colony 7 is actually very similar to Defender hardware :)

Oscar - bought this as faulty some weeks ago in a big box of games. After spending a lot of time trying to diagnose the fault when it first arrived, I took one quick look this afternoon and realised what the problem was, fixed :) I need to buy some more 74LS174s.

Ark Area, another one struck off the wanted list :)

Image

Macross, the first one. This was the first time I've really played it, and it's more fun than I remember from a short ownership some years ago.

Image

Hot Blocks (Tetrix II) - it's Tetris, with women. They sort of de-mosaic as you play, but even in full display look pretty blocky.

Image

USAAF Mustang - another repair bench survivor. This was sold to someone I know, and it arrived faulty. The guy wouldn't do him a part refund and ended up selling it again but this time described as having a colour fault. And the rest. It's fixed now, a couple of SMT leg reflows and 2 new chips. A chimpanzee tried to reflow half the underside with a heat gun at some point. Will be selling it. Interesting note - this is an actual licensed Korean board, complete with 'MADE IN KOREA' on it, the quality is comparable to the Japanese ones for once. Says 'SEOUL TRADING' on the title screen.

What's interesting about the Korean region variant Kingdom Grand Prix PCB (aka Shippu Mahou Daisakusen in Japan) that was properly distributed in Korea by distributor United Trading of Korea, the eproms that dictate which region it'll boot up to upon powering it up, they're all soldered on (as opposed to being socketed)...so it'd be in for a major re-haul conversion hack if it were to be converted into a proper JPN region Shippu Mahou Daisakusen PCB. Go figure. Fascinating but true.

Gotta love the Engrish tagline of KGP: The Drive to Death-Match Racing. Chicken no need (or if presented in proper English: No chickens needed).

The really nice thing about playing KGP in proper all-English language is, all the ending stories with the character(s) selected are presented in English for your reading pleasure. How cool is that?

Some more games.

Nearly finished my NMK collection now - Double Dealer. Have submitted fixes to MAME because straight away it was obvious the music speed was wrong.

Image

Invaders Revenge - a conversion for Moon Base / Space Invaders Pt 2 type PCBs, adds colour. This one isn't actually tested and also comes with a black box on a ribbon cable which functions as the external sound effect unit. Colour version very rare, but a big gamble on working/not working - we shall see...

Image

Jumping - it's bootleg Rainbow Islands, with Hitlers who shoot stars that then collapse into rainbows because the bootleggers didn't feel like redrawing much. Also red is awesome. Sold as working, chips needed reseating to get it booting and the volume control was faulty causing massive static noise.

Image

Legionnaire - might not be dumped since it came from Korea. Another one from there where some helpful soul has partially sanded the edge connector. Never ever do this. Fun game, better than I remember.

Image

Lethal Crash Race - PVP racing game, works very strangely - kinks in the road you have to steer around, then there are long curves where the game rotates the world around you instead.

Image

Mad Ball V2 - Breakout type game with women. Interestingly you start with a gun as standard, impressive slowdown if you get lots of score items falling as a result of spamming guns and getting a ball split powerup.

Image

Magix - Tetris with women. One of the few Tetris clones where I can actually clear more than a few levels. This one starts mixing it up quite a bit as time goes on, it's not bad really.

Image

Perestroika Girls - yet another Gals Panic type game, either MAME is wrong or (more likely) my 8190 audio chips are wonky as it seems to play a few notes out of place which is a typical fault for them. Really need to track down a second one for comparison but things like this which used to be incredibly common throwaway PCBs are now getting hard to find.

Image

Strahl - UPL collection nearing completion. Music on the PCB is significantly better than in MAME.

Image

Trigon - gah - what a nightmare PCB. This was sold as working in Japanese auctions, it arrived failing to boot with multiple RAM failures, and loads of prior repair work inflicted upon it. It's repaired properly now, but I'll be looking to trade up for one in better shape in future I think. I also think the seller knew it had problems or had faked the picture, because they'd pulled the photos down by the time it arrived....

Image

Ultra Balloon - Suna collection nearing completion, just need a Spark Man now.

Image

WOW Fantasia - more Gals Panic, Comad collection nearing completion..

Image

XX Mission - sold as working.... Yeah about that. Sprite colour fault but it took quite a lot of time to trace due to being a fractured solder join on a proper DIP style chip. Wasn't sure I was going to find it at one point.

I felt bad about the massive PCB spams, so I started posting them on my new blog. Here are the latest two lists.

Cool, I remember being very fond of Vulcan Venture. It's a more low risk PCB to pick up then then the other Konami games (they seem to break quite often, don't they?).

Most of the failures seem to surround those awful sound customs on some of them, or inputs on the older games.

Sorry to hear about UC, especially given how much you paid. I assume it works properly now? In comparison, I'm always amazed at how clean the boards I get from Sophia are - very few signs of use. I wish all boards were in that condition.

btw, I like your spam :)

Yeah it works fine now (in fact the sound is fantastic since nearly all the components are new), and now the seller is trying to offer me a full refund. Presumably he's happy to have it back now that it's not fucked. Some people really are amazing.

Wow, that's exceptionally scumtastic. I'm sure he'd re-price it even higher now that it actually works, lol. When you deal with people, unfortunately you are bound to run into those few that aren't so upstanding.

I've been mostly fortunate (knock on wood) but I had a recent experience with a very high value Neo cart that was sold as original but was a bootleg (I wonder how many unsuspecting buyers have purchased bootleg Neo goods over the years) and he claimed he would give me a refund and then as soon as I sent it back, he changed his mind. He then tried the old I never received it scam (which technically was accurate if only because he chose not to collect it from the post) and it wasn't until ebay laid the smackdown that he suddenly had an epiphany and became a reformed good citizen and gave me a full refund (and magically located the long missing cart at the post office, lol). Serves me right for buying expensive Neo carts from ebay I guess.

How does that bootleg Exerizer play? I've got a Sky Fox myself. Only time I've ever seen it for sale is when I snatched it up.

Nice get on the Dragon Spirit and Nemesis. By the way, Nemesis has a top board from Konami GT, do the ROM labels look peeled? It's quite a common repair to just swap the original ROMs onto GT boards though to fix a dead Nemesis.

I picked up these:
