I like using savestates in MAME for stage practice but there's a problem with key presses that's really irritating, hoping someone has had this and knows how to fix it..
basically when I press save or load state about 50% of the time it acts as if I pressed the key twice so (my save state key is S) it saves a state called S then unpauses and I have to press it again quickly to save state 5 or 6 or whatever.
anyone else seen this? any ideas how to fix it? i'm on debian linux.

I thought it was actually deliberate and it unpaused as soon as you saved.
I also thought the pause key was at P by default rather than S. Did you change something there or is that a Debian Linux port thing?

A simple workaround is to set the save key to something that isn't also a possible state name. Like control or F1.

Default save state keys for mainline MAME builds are F7 to load and shift-F7 to save (or possibly the other way around), then you press a number from 0-9 to choose the save slot.
Custom builds or if you have changed the defaults, no clue.
