I have a wide variety of musical interests, but if I was to narrow it down I'd say I listen to Ambient/Drone the most, followed by Prog Rock, followed by metal.

Ambient:
Bass Communion
Stars of the Lid
Sleep Research Facility
Steve Roach
Robert Rich
Robert Davies
Lull
Nadja
Murcof

Prog:
Porcupine Tree
Dream Theater

Metal:
Metallica
Devin Townsend
Strapping Young Lad
Necro Deathmort
Many Others...

I listen to some VGM as well, but I find it generally doesn't work once it's taken out of the context of the game. There's a few exceptions though, Final Fantasy, the Mass Effect OST's, The Uncharted Games, the Sly Cooper: Thieves in Time OST in particular is very, very good. Most other VGM doesn't really work for me outside of the game.

You should listen arranged albums. Some musicians like III do more elaborated works on their CDs.

80s metal [think Judas Priest], some punk [think Bad Religion], some rock, although I mostly now just listen to various electronic things, lots of hardcore techno.
I have a soft spot for the kind of happy hardcore made from 1993 to 1996, all the vocal samples and rave piano chords. Absolutely dreadful to some people, but I say it's super-charming and enjoyable.
Come check out my website, I guess. Random stuff I've worked on over the last two decades.

Yesssssssssss. Love me some resampler rave music.

Hell, I just love resamplers in general. Maybe that's why I really like SNES (or maybe it's the other way around! :o)

New Four Tet album out this year. I'm hyped.

That, the new Bola, Rosetta, Gorguts, Oneohtrix Point Never, Blut Aus Nord, and a bunch of other interesting albums are still to come. What a good year!

Tonnes, but I lean towards that with a Caribbean beat, or the very noisy (or best of all, both). My main priority with music is dancing (badly) so I also favour music with a bounce.

I like:

Jungle (mainly early 1990s and from the UK, and mainly ragga-jungle)
Breakcore (and particularly the sub genres ragga-core and balkan-core)
Breakbeat hardcore (again, with leanings to the early 90s UK sound)
Dancehall/ragga
Soca
A bit of ska
Speed techno/speedcore/extratone
Hardcore punk/thrash
Loads of types of rave music

Then anything a bit speedy and upbeat like electroswing and Balkan beat.

UK jungle will always be my number one choice though!

EDIT:

Big up the happy hardcore fam'! I love that stuff. Seeing SL2, Ratpack and Ragga Twins (all TBC) at a small party soon!

Ha, yeah I was into Happy Hardcore in the mid 90's too. Anabolic Frolic and Hullabaloo parties FTW!

Fortunately that scene still thrives in the UK. There's numerous jungle/rave/hardcore parties and events every weekend here.

Excellent taste, this is what I mainly collect. ;)

Although I do like pretty much anything, except country lol. There never seems to be a shortage of great music out there to listen to! If I don't have a new vinyl delivery at least once every couple of weeks I'll go crazy.

Jungle is still going hard here, happy hardcore, not so much. Lot of dubstep here too.

I've hit buying 20-30 records a month two or three times this year. Gotta slow down! Thankfully ragga is dirt cheap on 7"s these days, so that affordability offsets jungles '£25 for a 12" single' thing for me!

And there's good country out there!

I always forget Canada was the other bastion of jungle along with the UK, and still is! I have some R Cola 12"s, but that's it for Canadian jungle in my record collection.

Dubstep in the mainstream is waning here, it seems. I generally don't enjoy dubstep or know a thing about it, but I've found some techstep I enjoy a little.

I like the more dubby ragga style dubstep, not so much the Skrillex auditory assault style. Check out dubstep.fm(streaming). They play a lot of the dubby-er stuff. If you like ragga, I think you might dig it.

True, there's some fantastic deals out there! I was actually talking to an old friend a couple nights ago (also a DJ/collector of jungle from 94-95, we go waaaay back) and just catching him up on what the prices are nowadays since he's been out of the collecting scene the past couple years. The prices 10+ years ago used to be crazy for some releases, at least a "few" calmed down!

Then again, there's some sellers on discogs (who obviously don't know the tunes) asking for insane money on certain vinyl releases, which is a shame. Ruins the market for a lot of people, even me on very rare occasions... Ah well.

Ragga/reggae can be a mixed bag, some are extremely cheap, other tunes can be unbelievably expensive. When I get the "let's buy some ragga/reggae!" bug it usually ends up being pricey. :D

There's some really cool guys up in Canada, I dealt with Debaser back in the day a couple times, don't know if he still produces/play out. A lot of guys just disappeared over the years...

Discogs does me alright sometimes - you just have to be patient I guess. I've been watching Remarc's EP Help Me for years, waiting for a sub-£50 copy! I've also found plenty of £3 jungle records on there; Congo Natty white labels and such. I did just pay £24 for the DJ SS remix of Cutty Ranks' Limb by Limb on Suburban Base, but it comes with the original tune too, and is a split between Suburban Base and Fashion Records; two of my favourite labels of all time sharing a release! Scooped Burial by Leviticus at the same time for a few quid too, which took away the sting!

As for ragga/reggae – you're right. It's seems to all be 50p or £50. I exaggerate, of course, but it feels that way sometimes. It laregly the older stuff that's pricey. Post-2000 ragga and dancehall is always pretty cheap!

Nice scoop on Limb By Limb, for being such a large (in terms of number of units) release that one surprises me how much it can command even to this day! And it always sells on eBay! I've been looking to snag a mint copy to replace my own but haven't had much luck there.

If you like those Fashion/Sub Base crossovers, I'm sure you gotta have Marvellous Cain's Gun Talk LP. Lot's of cross over on that amazing LP!

And speaking of Fashion, Jungle Fashion's two "Ragga In The Jungle" LP's might be my most favorite jungle compilations ever! Dub Vendor's label is legendary. ;)

See, what I love now is all the sets and mix tapes from back in the day I had on tapes that died long ago are all available to download.

I have a buddy who has a huge box FULL of jungle tapes from the mid to late 90's. He probably has 90% of the sets from all the parties we went to back then. Some work better than others, but it's still cool to get drunk and throw random tapes on, especially when it comes on and everybody is like 'I remember this party!'. Although, then you look at the date and realize it was 15+ years ago

Good times. I do miss the rave scene though. It's fun to go out to a club and hear tunes live now, but it's not the same vibe. Probably the fact that I'm just drinking now and not on chems at parties probably changes things too  But there is definitely something special about getting 10,000 people together in a warehouse and throwing down all night!

My favourite breakbeat hardcore/jungle label ever is Moving Shadow, so that gets pricy too!

But I never go or proper mint, as I occasionally DJ in public and love a house party, so prefer just under mint with records! I still treat them very well, but real mint is damn tough to maintain!

Too true, there's some really good archive sites out there for old skool sets (both jungle and hardcore). I had a good buddy who worked on goldenerajungle.com but sadly that site got hacked and hasn't been restored, I should see if I can find his email address and ask if he ever plans on getting it rehosted. It was a great site!
spadgy wrote:My favourite breakbeat hardcore/jungle label ever is Moving Shadow, so that gets pricy too!
Great label indeed! ;) Actually I've dealt with a few guys who worked on MS, recently I got a mint copy of SHADOW43 from Si (of 2 Bad Mice fame). Nice guy!

Honestly it's not too bad!

It works out though, as every now and then I'll buy doubles of tunes I really like, or I find at a cheap price. I can get myself a better copy for the stash, or just grab things I know that are rare so I could trade in the future. :D
spadgy wrote:Straight on my Discogs want list! Thanks for the tip!
Full vocal remixes by Dubb Hustlers (Umbrella Crew!), Lennie D Ice, Marvellous Cain, Potential Bad Boy, Kenny Ken, Just Jungle, Bizzy B, etc., they're simply stunning LP's done in the same style as the Fashion JA to UK series! The only downside (especially since you mix as well) is there's 3 tracks per side, so it's a little quiet. But just from the diverse amount of artists that worked on these LP's is more than enough to have this one rank extremely high in my book. ;)

You'll absolutely love it.

I listen to just about anything, except most dubstep. Case in point, here's a sampling of tracks I listened to on my hour and a half drive home today. I tend to jump around a lot.

Cage the Elephant - Ain't No Rest for the Wicked
Black Sabbath - God is Dead?
NWA - 100 Miles and Runnin'
Smashing Pumpkins - Today and Cherub Rock
Queens of the Stone Age - Sick Sick Sick and Turning the screw
Reel Big Fish - Most of the Candy Coated Fury album
Johnny Cash - When the Man Comes Around
CCR - Fortunate Son
Hendrix - All Along the Watch Tower
Rolling Stones - Ruby Tuesday
The Animals - House of the Rising Sun

I'm also a huge fan of NIN and kind of a big fan of Alessandro Cortini. Actually saw a quadraphonic noise show of his in Toronto under the name blindoldfreak that was rather incredible.
