In addition to the strange trick that I can't do no matter how many times I try (likely because I don't understand how it's done) the game also has bullet wobbling.
Not really. The "air" layer (air enemies and bullets) doesn't horizontal scroll when you move left/right. The ground layers do, at different rates depending on how "close" you are (which really doesn't mean anything). Gets a bit disorienting since you usually expect the air stuff to scroll too, but once you sorta "get" it, it makes more sense.
Trying my hand at that little challenge probably tells me everything I need to know. I'm not sure the game is playable with both buttons mapped to a custom with autofire, but the main thing is the timing of the bomb attack. The bomb's apparent autotargeting is supremely useless here.

Really though, how do you pull it off? You only have two ground attacks at the start of the game, and a very low ship speed. I pulled it off in the World set but not Japanese. You can zap a line of three guys at most but then you're past the rest before you can lay down another bomb.
You actually only need 4.
I find autofire makes it much easier. I stay at the bottom of the screen, and as soon as I see the guys start scrolling down, I start bombing and tapping to the side.
Think I've got it down...there's something else required. Maybe it's just shooting that spot repeatedly. It doesn't seem to ever come up if I don't have a high level of firepower by the point where it appears.

Not only that, but if you die while the bonus is out, it will actually disappear, along with the remaining portion of the bonus points it hasn't given you yet.
Although I'm not in on this, thanks for finally cracking the secret to that 500K bonus symbol, freaking tough to pull off though. The other secret seems to be the citadels that pop out of the ground ala Xevious (not sure how to trigger these). Tried to do this in the MD port, but everything is set up too differently and the bonus is not likely in it.
And yes I like this game, despite how punishing it truly is (I may be the only one).
