Were there any shmups made for the 3DO?...

Post by dave4shmups »

The CD-I has Tetsuo Gaiden, Alien Gate, and Steel Machine. Does the 3DO have ANY shmups?

Not that I'm aware of. There is Starfighter and some 3D shooter where you go killing aliens after some tutorials, with lots of FMV intros and a computerized voice guiding you to your next objective. (God, what was its name? That's all I can remember about it.) and Total Eclipse. But I think that's as shooty as the system got.

Edit: Shockwave. But no shmups per se on it.

Dave, I have a 3DO and a bunch of games and the system just sucks. The best game for the 3DO was Slam N Jam and to this day, it is still the best. It's a good Run N Gun rip-off.

Hey, it had an arcade perfect port of Samurai Shodown 1 ! (unfortunately not a shmup though...)

Oh, well, I don't play fighters, so I must apologize to Panasonic and Trip Hawkins.

There was one good shooting game for it. Basically you need a clay pigeon launching device - now get a shotgun, and load the launcher with 3DOs.

Fire away!

Star Control II is the closest thing to a shmup I can think of for the 3DO.

I'm just fascinated with obscure video game hardware, and the only systems I know didn't have shmups released on them were educational systems like the Pico and the Playdia.

I'll have to check on Viewpoint.

How about the Amiga CDTV? Were there any shmups released for that console?

That's really cold, but, admittedly, also infectiously chuckle-inducing.

 Hey man, you gotta admire Trip Hawkins for trying! And after the console crashed and burned, he turned the company into a software developer.

OT, how is Phoenix 3 for the 3DO? I know it's a borderliner.

I'll volunteer a shotgun if one of you volunteer a system.

And Sega did the same.

There are some gems for the 3DO. Captain Quazar, Dragon's Lair (But you might as well get the DVD version) Road Rash, Crash And Burn, Gex, StarFighter, and Star Control 2. At least it had a more or less decent line up, unlike the Jaguar. (This one only had AVP, Rayman, and Tempest 2000 as the only decent games of its lineup.)

It's not quite perfect- the frame rate isn't as smooth as the Neo version. I used to enjoy it though until NGCDZ came along.
Kinect? KIN NOT.

I don't think Viewpoint came out for the 3DO; I searched Gamefaqs and didn't find anything there.

I don't know if I consider gamefaqs to be all that authoritative... but I don't think there was a 3DO version of Viewpoint either.

Total Eclipse is the closest 3DO game to be a shmup. Its like Starfox 64.

Shockwave also, and lastly Return Fire. All those games are borderliners.
This industry has become 2 dimensional as it transcended into a 3D world.

I was intrigued when I saw The Secret of Monkey Island on the list of games available for the 3DO. I loved that game on the PC in the early 90's.

Ok the below are definitely not “traditional” shooters, but they do have shmup characteristics even if they are primarily “on rails” (except for Off World Interceptor) shooters.

Burning Soldier
Off World Interceptor (hey if Total Eclipse is mentioned; why not OWI)
Novastorm
Starblade

I think Microcosm had you targeting stuff to shoot, but it may be too much like Sewer Shark.

The original Solar Eclipse is also quite good.

3DO is best for its hulkingly slow and dated FPS games as well as Twisted. :P

Shockwave was like the most popular title the 3DO ever had outside of Gex.

I'd say Road Rash and Crash 'n Burn were both really popular until Twisted Metal got big on the PSX. Man I remember all the hype about Way of the Warrior. That was going to be the biggest game on the system...then it was released.

Great stupid fun though.

Wasn't The Horde released on the 3DO? Not a shmup, but supposedly damn good.

Anybody ever read the Nick Rox review of 3DO SF II in Gamefan back in the day? Man, he had an aneurism of joy. lol Wish I could find it somewhere online, pretty funny "hardcore" writing.

Thanks for that list! Microcosm came out for the CD32 as well; looks like an interesting game. As does Phoenix 3. I have PS1 Starblade Alpha; I wonder how the 3DO port of Starblade compares. And how is the first Star Wars: Rebel Assault? The second on the PS1 is horrible!

I just got my latest issue of EGM, and the 3DO port of Road Rash actually made it onto their Top 200 Games of All Time list! They quoted Trip Hawkins as saying that if Road Rash had come out earlier for the 3DO, that the system might have done better! I have doubts about that, but, in any case, it must be quite an awesome port of the game!
