Were there any shmups made for the 3DO?...
The CD-I has Tetsuo Gaiden, Alien Gate, and Steel Machine. Does the 3DO have ANY shmups?

Not that I'm aware of. There is Starfighter and some 3D shooter where you go killing aliens after some tutorials, with lots of FMV intros and a computerized voice guiding you to your next objective. (God, what was its name? That's all I can remember about it.) and Total Eclipse. But I think that's as shooty as the system got.
Edit: Shockwave. But no shmups per se on it.

Hey, it had an arcade perfect port of Samurai Shodown 1 ! (unfortunately not a shmup though...)

I'm just fascinated with obscure video game hardware, and the only systems I know didn't have shmups released on them were educational systems like the Pico and the Playdia.
I'll have to check on Viewpoint.
How about the Amiga CDTV? Were there any shmups released for that console?

"There was one good shooting game for it. Basically you need a clay pigeon launching device - now get a shotgun, and load the launcher with 3DOs.
Fire away!"
Hey man, you gotta admire Trip Hawkins for trying! And after the console crashed and burned, he turned the company into a software developer.
OT, how is Phoenix 3 for the 3DO? I know it's a borderliner.

And Sega did the same.

There are some gems for the 3DO. Captain Quazar, Dragon's Lair (But you might as well get the DVD version) Road Rash, Crash And Burn, Gex, StarFighter, and Star Control 2. At least it had a more or less decent line up, unlike the Jaguar. (This one only had AVP, Rayman, and Tempest 2000 as the only decent games of its lineup.)

Ok the below are definitely not “traditional” shooters, but they do have shmup characteristics even if they are primarily “on rails” (except for Off World Interceptor) shooters.
Burning Soldier
Off World Interceptor (hey if Total Eclipse is mentioned; why not OWI)
Novastorm
Starblade
I think Microcosm had you targeting stuff to shoot, but it may be too much like Sewer Shark.

Thanks for that list! Microcosm came out for the CD32 as well; looks like an interesting game. As does Phoenix 3. I have PS1 Starblade Alpha; I wonder how the 3DO port of Starblade compares. And how is the first Star Wars: Rebel Assault? The second on the PS1 is horrible!Game Rogue wrote:Ok the below are definitely not “traditional” shooters, but they do have shmup characteristics even if they are primarily “on rails” (except for Off World Interceptor) shooters.

I just got my latest issue of EGM, and the 3DO port of Road Rash actually made it onto their Top 200 Games of All Time list! They quoted Trip Hawkins as saying that if Road Rash had come out earlier for the 3DO, that the system might have done better! I have doubts about that, but, in any case, it must be quite an awesome port of the game!
