Youtube is pissing me off

So, I got an email notifying me of a "private message" I received. Naturally, I go to my youtube inbox to see the full thing.

Problem? The message ISN'T THERE. Even if I get there using the links in the actual fucking notification.

For some reason Youtube claims I have two accounts--I checked both of them. Neither of them feature the message I got a notification about.

Is there some special thing I have to do to see personal messages, or is this a known bug with Youtube?

the 2 accounts thing is to do with G+ integration

I think they setup a default youtube based on your gmail email account or G+ profile.

I find it very confusing as I never know if I'm supposed to be logged in as 'Ray Trace' or 'Raytrace' hahahaha

If you're signed in on any of google's services (with an alt account, etc.), then do as much as visit youtube, it will automatically create a new account for that username/profile.

The buffering issue comes from the fact that you cant specify a certain resolution, even if you do, it will throttle to the best resolution and start to back down till it gets to 144p (yes even lower than 240p) then try to throttle up again. for some one who watches a lot of youtube stuff, i prefer to watch on my smartphone, coz it apparently doesnt throttle resolutions (has only two resolution i guess, HD + nonHD), its started to suck watching on the computer.

Yeah, if they could allow you to turn off the auto-switching resolutions, I imagine a ton of the problems would be fixed...

To fix that, just click on the gear icon and select the resolution you want. The default option is automatic which will change resolutions all the time, hence all the buffering.

The annoying part is that you need to do that every time you watch a new video.

I just checked my settings and noticed Youtube automatically turned on "Allow ads to be displayed with my videos". What the fuck?

I've also been getting buffering, playback refuses to start until I reload the entire page and constantly switching the resolution like a piece of shit issues.

Web 2.0 is shit. The whole site chugs if you're looking at a page with more than 20 videos on it.

Why aren't you letting established brands piggyback their ads on your success? Are you selfish or something?

The best is when ad revenue doesn't go to you, but goes to some group claiming ownership of something you made. I haven't run into this but there are cases of industry representative / YouTube-approved and -assisted content trolling services flagging things that they had no business flagging, and making money off other people's stuff, when that money should have gone to the uploaders. I guess everybody's gotta have a rep these days...it makes sense that YouTube/Google went this route instead of having to keep up a persistently adversarial relationship with "content owners" but the new system is certainly ripe for abuses which are outside of what people expect. I don't have a terribly large amount of sympathy for anybody who uploads somebody else's music over their stuttery, shitty Call of Duty videos and expects to make money off that, but that is definitely not all that's going on. There is also a case to be made that it's reasonable for people to have viewed this as just a more public version of a classic mixtape (nevermind what pops up when you search for "mixtape" in Google...tons of hits!).

I have always stayed away from ad revenue since they offered me revenue sharing on some little FRAPS video I made of in-game Thief 2. What, I can't take money from that! I knew that might end badly so I avoided it.

It pisses me off insanely. I spent tons of hours building backgrounds and backing them up to cycle through for years then in 1 quick swoop they forced everyone to "upgrade" to the new layout and all that work is now useless. And yes the new layout doesn't look as good and takes way more experimentation in order to get a decent looking banner, but the worst problem with it is unless you are using a repeating pattern (which is usually boring) then it's completely impossible to get something to look good on all 3 types with their forced shitbag crop system (computer, handheld, tv). They don't even have the brains to give you the option of uploading a different picture for each type. At best you can get the first 2 to look ok, after a lot of trouble, but the tv option will look stupid. That's the best you can hope for unless you are using small repeated patterns. Assholes. Even changing your avatar is a dick in the ass now. You have to login to some G+ bullshit and upload a photo into an album and go through cropping etc. Absolute idiots.

This is just a case of Google struggling to continue to employ their Youtube software engineers. The site was perfect years back, as far as I'm concerned. But these guys have to continue to earn their salaries.

Youtube calculates this by $1 US for every ten-thousand views, multiplied by an amount relative to the number of subscribers a channel has. Likes may also factor in. That's why some people put a "Like, subscribe, comment!" advisory after their videos.

Use JDownloader or something similar to download the movie file, it'll download at full speed. You get to keep it forever as a bonus instead of it getting removed a week later.

... The links took me straight to Youtube. But I did consider that the message might've been just to get me to link YT to my GPlus account.

Also, update: The person who sent me the PM apparently had their account deleted for multiple TOS violations... which prolly supports the "phishing" theory as some providers don't really demolish accounts, they just assign them to bots.

I see Youtube is serving video in a format other than the old FLV. Does anyone know if a standalone media player supports this? VLC does not.

You could try disabling the HTML5 player in favor of flash (if this still works) and then getting the FLV as normal.

I use Linterna Mágica to watch youtube videos... I can't stand the default player, it's getting progressively worse

I only stream YouTube on my TV using MediaPortal's excellent Online Videos plugin. Can download the streams in your preferred format as well. If I try to stream on my laptop, I mostly get hiccups, and the rage is there for sure.
